Top Matthew Knies News

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Three-game, six-point streak

Knies scored a power-play goal Thursday in a 2-1 overtime win over the Rangers.

Knies redirected a shot from William Nylander at the top of the crease at 11:48 of the first period. It was Knies' second goal and the Leafs first power-play goal of the season (10 opportunities). Knies has six points (two goals, four assists) during a three-game point streak.

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Second in team scoring so far

Knies bagged a trio of apples Tuesday in a 7-4 victory over Nashville.

Don't look now, but Knies sits second in team scoring with six points (one goal, five assists), behind William Nylander, who has seven. It will be tough for the winger to manage a high-level pace, but Knies could flirt with a point-per-game pace at times this season -- especially when the Leafs' power play starts clicking. All of Knies' points have come at even strength.

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: First goal of season

Knies had a goal and an assist in Monday's 3-2 loss to Detroit.

Knies redirected a pass from Bobby McMann off his skate at the top of the crease and past Cam Talbot. It was Knies' first goal of the season and third point (three games). It's only a matter of time before Knies and linemates Auston Matthews and McMann, who moved up the lineup over the game, explode offensively. Those 58 points (29 goals, 29 helpers) from last year may look small in comparison.

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Locked in with Leafs

Knies signed a six-year, $46.5 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs on Sunday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Knies would have been offer-sheet eligible July 1, so Toronto prioritized getting a long-term contract done with the 22-year-old winger, who broke out for 29 goals and 29 assists in 78 games during the 2024-25 regular season. Knies operated primarily as the top-line left wing on a line with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. With Marner likely headed elsewhere this offseason, more of the offensive load could fall on Knies.

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Ready to rock

Knies (undisclosed) will play in Game 7 against Florida on Sunday, per Kristen Shilton of ESPN.

Knies sustained an injury late in the first period during Friday's 2-0 win over the Panthers in Game 6. He didn't leave the contest but logged only 13:01 of playing time. However, Knies will see regular deployment in Game 7 against Florida while skating on the top line and seeing time on the first power-play combination. He has registered five goals, seven points, 29 shots on net, seven blocked shots and 31 hits through 12 appearances this postseason.

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Status uncertain for Game 7

Knies (undisclosed) was injured in Game 6 versus the Panthers on Friday and is questionable to play in Game 7 on Sunday, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Knies played 13:01 in Game 6, but he was laboring through many of his shifts after taking a hit late in the first period. The winger's potential absence could stretch the Maple Leafs' wing depth thin. If he can't play, Nicholas Robertson could draw into the lineup, though Max Pacioretty would be most likely to get a top-six promotion for Game 7.

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Two points in Game 3 loss

Knies recorded a goal, an assist, three shots on goal and four hits in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss against the Panthers in Game 3.

Knies recorded three goals in Toronto's first-round series against the Senators, and he's improved in Round 2 against the Panthers. He also recorded a one-goal, one-assist performance in Game 1, giving him four points over his last three appearances. The left winger had a career-high 58 points across 78 outings during the 2024-25 regular season, and he's carried over that success into the playoffs.

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Pots winner in Game 1

Knies scored the game-winning goal and added an assist Monday in the Maple Leafs' 5-4 victory over the Panthers in Game 1 of their second-round series.

With Toronto on its heels late in the third period as Florida attempted to mount a furious comeback from a 4-1 deficit, Knies jumped on a clearing attempt by Mitch Marner for a partial breakaway and beat Sergei Bobrovsky with a nifty backhand to seal the win for the Leafs. It was Knies' fourth goal in seven games to begin the team's playoff run, but Monday's effort was his first multi-point performance.
