Padres' Nestor Cortes: Undergoes surgery
Cortes (biceps) underwent surgery to repair a tendon tear in his left arm Thursday and will be sidelined for 9-to-10 months, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Cortes landed on the injured list Sept. 5 with a biceps injury. He was ramping up for a potential return through the end of the month, though he apparently suffered a setback or was rediagnosed. Cortes will now be set to miss at least the first half of the 2026 season.

Padres' Adrian Morejon: Move into rotation not ruled out
Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said Tuesday that the organization will have conversations soon about the possibility of moving Morejon into the starting rotation in 2026, 97.3 The Fan reports.
Morejon boasts a 2.42 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 141:38 K:BB over 137.1 regular-season innings as a full-time reliever since the start of the 2024 campaign. He was often used as a starting pitcher earlier in his career, though, and the Padres could have a clear need in the rotation next season if Dylan Cease and Michael King depart in free agency. San Diego is also mulling shifting Mason Miller into the rotation.

Padres' Mason Miller: Role in 2026 undetermined
Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said Tuesday that the team will discuss in the coming weeks whether Miller will remain in the bullpen or move into the starting rotation next season, 97.3 The Fan reports.
Miller has been a full-time reliever the last two seasons and has been arguably the best bullpen arm in the game during that span, collecting a 2.56 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 43.1 percent strikeout rate over 115 regular-season appearances. If the Padres elect to keep him in a relief role, he would likely take over as closer, as incumbent Robert Suarez is expected to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract and become a free agent. However, Miller has past experience as a starter and the club could try him in that role, particularly if it loses both Dylan Cease and Michael King in free agency.

Padres' Jose Iglesias: Suspended one game by MLB
Iglesias has been suspended one game by Major League Baseball for his actions following Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Cubs, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
Iglesias was among several Padres players to voice their displeasure to the umpire crew following their Game 3 loss, but he's the only one to receive a suspension. Much of the angst was over a strike three call on Xander Bogaerts, who received a fine. Barring a successful appeal, Iglesias will serve the suspension on Opening Day next year. The 35-year-old is a pending free agent.

Padres' Ethan Salas: Will not play in AFL
Salas (back) is no longer slated to play in the Arizona Fall League, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Salas missed most of the 2025 season with a stress reaction in his lower back. It does not appear he has suffered a setback, but the Padres have decided to give the young catcher more time to heal rather than pushing him to play in the AFL. It's unclear whether Salas might play winter ball later this offseason instead.

Padres' Jackson Merrill: Pops homer to conclude postseason
Merrill went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's loss to the Cubs in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series.
Merrill accounted for the Padres' only run in their loss to the Cubs by leading off the ninth inning with a home run. He had a disappointing regular season but ended the campaign well, tallying eight home runs with 18 RBI and 18 runs scored across his final 22 games -- including the postseason.
