Top Devils News

  • Devils' Luke Glendening: Sets up shortie

Glendening notched a shorthanded assist and four hits in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Oilers.

Glendening set up Connor Brown for a shortie in the third period. The 36-year-old Glendening has his first point as a Devil after winning a job in training camp while on a tryout. He's added two shots on net, nine hits, four blocked shots and a minus-3 rating over five appearances. He'll continue to feature on the fourth line and the penalty kill throughout the year.

  • Devils' Connor Brown: Nets shortie against old 'mates

Brown scored a shorthanded goal on two shots in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Oilers.

Brown, who played with the Oilers last year, cashed in a shortie at 10:37 of the third period to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. The 31-year-old winger has three goals through five games this season while filling a third-line role and a spot on the penalty kill. He's added nine shots on net, four hits, six blocked shots and a plus-1 rating. Brown's unlikely to be a major factor on offense, but he could repeat the 30-point total he had over 82 regular-season games a year ago.

  • Devils' Dawson Mercer: Pots empty-netter

Mercer scored an empty-net goal on two shots and added two PIM in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Oilers.

Mercer is starting to roll on offense. He was held off the scoresheet in the season opener but has racked up three goals and two assists over four games since. The 23-year-old also has eight shots on net, eight blocked shots, four hits and a plus-5 rating through five appearances. He's played in a top-six role in recent years, but he has failed to hit the 40-point mark in each of the last two seasons. If this hot start continues, he could challenge his career year of 56 points in 82 games in 2022-23.

  • Devils' Nico Hischier: Two helpers Saturday

Hischier produced two assists, one on the power play, in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Oilers.

The 26-year-old center had a hand in a Jesper Bratt tally late in the second period before feeding Dawson Mercer for an empty-netter late in the third. Hischier has built a four-game point streak after being blanked in the Devils' season opener, pocketing two goals and six points over that stretch.

  • Devils' Jesper Bratt: Two-point effort in win

Bratt scored a power-play goal and added an even-strength assist in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Oilers.

After giving the Devils a 2-0 lead late in the second period, Bratt set up Jack Hughes for the eventual game-winner midway through the third. Bratt has gotten onto the scoresheet in five straight games to begin the season, piling up three goals and seven points during that streak -- including one goal and two assists on the power play.

  • Devils' Jack Hughes: Racks up three points Saturday

Hughes scored two even-strength goals, one the game-winner, and added a power-play assist in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Oilers.

The 24-year-old opened the scoring midway through the second period, then got left alone in front of Calvin Pickard after an Edmonton turnover and made no mistake, tucking the puck home to give New Jersey a 4-1 lead. It was Hughes' first multi-point performance of the season. Through five games, he's collected three goals and six points, with half that production (one goal and two assists) coming on the power play.

  • Devils' Jake Allen: Bags win over Oilers

Allen turned aside 27 shots in Saturday's 5-3 win over Edmonton.

The veteran netminder didn't get beaten until late in the second period, as the Devils never trailed in the contest. He has won two straight starts and has allowed just five goals on 76 shots in his last three appearances. Allen is handling No. 1 duties in the net due to the absence of Jacob Markstrom (lower body).

  • Devils' Jake Allen: Starting against Oilers

Allen will patrol the home crease against Edmonton on Saturday, according to Oilers play-by-play announcer Jack Michaels.

Allen is coming off a 21-save performance in a 3-1 win over Florida on Thursday. He went 2-0-0 against Edmonton during the 2024-25 regular season, stopping 62 of 64 shots. Allen should get a chance to string together some starts as New Jersey's No. 1 netminder due to the absence of Jacob Markstrom (lower body).

  • Devils' Nico Hischier: Adds insurance tally

Hischier scored a goal and went plus-2 in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Panthers.

Hischier was held off the scoresheet in the season opener, but he's up to four points through four contests overall. The 26-year-old has added six shots on net, nine blocked shots and a plus-3 rating. Hischier's all-around play keeps him in the top six with plenty of ice time in all situations, making him a reliable fantasy contributor.

  • Devils' Jack Hughes: Ties game on power play

Hughes scored a power-play goal on eight shots in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Panthers.

Hughes' goal in the second period was his first tally of the season. He's added a pair of assists, 16 shots on net and a minus-3 rating across four contests. Hughes has plenty of talent and plays a prominent role for the Devils, so it's only a matter of time before more shots start to find the twine.

  • Devils' Timo Meier: Two points, including GWG

Meier scored the game-winning goal and added a power-play assist in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Devils.

The 29-year-old winger tipped home a shot from Simon Nemec to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead early in the third period. Meier has found the back of the net in three straight games, piling up three goals and five points during that stretch with 12 shots on net and a plus-4 rating.

  • Devils' Jake Allen: Sharp in first win

Allen made 21 saves in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Panthers.

Evan Rodrigues banged home a rebound early in the first period, but Allen stood tall the rest of the way to record his first win of the season. The 35-year-old netminder will see a hefty workload over the next couple of weeks with Jacob Markstrom (lower body) already on the shelf, and Allen should be up to the task after posting a 2.66 GAA and a .906 save percentage over 31 regular-season appearances in 2024-25.

  • Devils' Jake Allen: First goalie off Thursday

Allen (cramping) was the first goalie off during Thursday's morning skate, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports, indicating that he'll draw the home start against Florida.

Although Nico Daws was in the starter's crease during Thursday's morning skate, it appears likely that Allen will draw the start. Allen exited Monday's matchup against the Blue Jackets after two stanzas due to cramping, but it doesn't seem as though the issue will force him to miss additional time. Prior to exiting Monday's game, he turned aside 23 of 24 shots (.958 save percentage).

  • Devils' Jacob Markstrom: Poised for 2-3 week absence

Markstrom is expected to miss "a couple of weeks" with a lower-body injury according to head coach Sheldon Keefe on Wednesday.

There was speculation regarding Markstrom's status after the Devils recalled Nico Daws from the minors Wednesday. In three outings this year, including a relief appearance versus Columbus on Monday, the 35-year-old Markstrom has a 2-1-0 record and an .845 save percentage. Without Markstrom in the lineup, Jake Allen (undisclosed) is expected to see the bulk of the workload but could share plenty of starts with Daws. Given the length of his injury absence, Markstrom could be a candidate for injured reserve in the coming days.

  • Devils' Nico Daws: Up from minors

Daws was recalled from AHL Utica on Wednesday.

Zack MacEwen (upper body) was put on injured reserve in a corresponding move. Daws was summoned because Jake Allen left Monday's 3-2 win over Columbus because of cramping. If Allen isn't available for Thursday's clash against Florida, then Jacob Markstrom will probably get the start while Daws serves as the understudy.

  • Devils' Zack MacEwen: Lands on injured reserve

MacEwen (upper body) was designated for injured reserve Wednesday.

Considering MacEwen has been ruled out indefinitely at this point, his placement on IR shouldn't come as a surprise. The fact that the team used the available roster spot to bring up netminder Nico Daws is something that should give fantasy managers pause, as it could be an indication that Jacob Markstrom or Jake Allen won't be available against the Panthers on Thursday. For his part, the 29-year-old MacEwen played in just 21 regular-season games for the Senators last season and was likely going to be a fringe roster player for the Devils as well.

  • Devils' Brenden Dillon: Bags apple in win

Dillon registered and assist, four hits and two blocked shots in Monday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jackets.

Dillon picked up his first point in three games when he helped out on Dawson Mercer's empty-netter. The 34-year-old Dillon is a stalwart on the third pairing and already has nine hits and seven blocked shots this season. He offers little scoring upside but should remain a steady presence in the physical categories -- he has at least 190 hits and 100 blocks in each of the last four seasons.
