  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Coasts to win Sunday

Gibson made 16 saves on 18 shots in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Oilers.

Gibson had a relatively easy outing Sunday against the reigning Western Conference champs. The 32-year-old netminder tended a clean first period before allowing the first goal halfway through the second period. The latter of the two he surrendered was against Leon Draisaitl, the reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner. Sunday's victory was Gibson's second consecutive win between the pipes, and he now has a 2-1-0 record, a 2.98 GAA and an .873 save percentage through three appearances. His early numbers this season aren't quite what he posted in 29 regular-season appearances a year ago, but he continues to find a way to outduel opposing goalies. If both Gibson and Cam Talbot remain healthy, Gibson should have solid streaming value and is a candidate for spot starts in fantasy when his name is called. Gibson and Talbot will likely split the upcoming two games, with one going against the Sabres on Wednesday and the other versus the Islanders on Thursday.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Starting Sunday

Gibson will defend the home crease against Edmonton on Saturday, according to Max Bultman of The Athletic.

Gibson was stellar Friday, turning aside 32 shots in a 2-1 overtime win over Tampa Bay. The win was in stark contrast to his only other appearance this season, when he allowed five goals on 13 shots in a loss to Montreal on Opening Night. Edmonton has managed only 10 goals in four games this campaign.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Rebounds well in second start

Gibson allowed one goal on 32 shots in Friday's 2-1 overtime win over the Lightning.

Gibson was pulled from his Detroit debut Oct. 9 versus the Canadiens, but his second start went much better. He needed to be good, and he was, allowing the Red Wings to earn a fourth straight win. It may still take a few performances for Gibson to claw back from starts from Cam Talbot, and both goalies can be expected to see a decent share of time this season. The Red Wings wrap up their current three-game homestand against the Oilers on Sunday.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Set to start Friday

Gibson is slated to defend the home crease against the Lightning on Friday, Sean Shapiro of DLLS Sports reports.

While Cam Talbot will draw a third consecutive start at home against the Panthers on Wednesday, Gibson will return to the net against Tampa Bay. Gibson allowed five goals on 13 shots during his Opening Night start at home against Montreal before being pulled late in the second period, and he'll attempt to bounce back Friday.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Gets hook in Wings debut

Gibson stopped eight of 13 shots before being replaced by Cam Talbot late in the second period of Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Canadiens.

It was an inauspicious beginning to Gibson's Red Wings tenure, but defensive breakdowns and bad bounces contributed to the first four goals against the veteran netminder, before he gave up a juicy rebound to set up the fifth and got the hook. Detroit is counting on Gibson to reinforce its crease after the veteran netminder posted a 2.77 GAA and .911 save percentage over 29 appearances for a struggling Ducks squad in 2024-25, but he'll need more help from his new teammates than he got Thursday.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Set to face Habs

Gibson will patrol the home crease in the Red Wings' season opener against Montreal on Thursday, per Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Gibson will also make his Detroit debut after being acquired from Anaheim over the summer. The 32-year-old netminder had an 11-11-2 record, 2.77 GAA and .911 save percentage in 29 regular-season appearances with the Ducks last year. Gibson should get the majority of the Red Wings' starts this year, but Cam Talbot might still get a larger workload than a typical backup.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Set to start Saturday

Gibson will patrol the home crease in Saturday's preseason finale against Toronto, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Gibson stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced in Monday's 2-1 exhibition loss to Pittsburgh. After being acquired from Anaheim during the offseason, he will likely begin the 2025-26 campaign as Detroit's No. 1 netminder.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Between pipes against Pittsburgh

Gibson will tend the home twine in Monday's exhibition contest against the Penguins, per Ansar Khan of MLive.com.

Gibson will draw into his second start of the preseason Monday. The veteran netminder was sharp in limited action Friday against the Penguins, turning aside 13 of 14 shots before giving way to Michal Postava. Gibson will attempt to help Detroit get into the postseason for the first time since 2016 in 2025-26.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Starting against Pittsburgh

Gibson will defend the road crease during Friday's preseason game against the Penguins, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Gibson will make his first start of the preseason Friday, but Michal Postava will take over in the net during the second half of the matchup. Gibson made 29 appearances for the Ducks last year, going 11-11-2 with a 2.77 GAA and a .911 save percentage, and he's slated to share the net with Cam Talbot in Detroit once the 2025-26 regular season gets underway.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Looks ready to begin camp

Gibson (lower body) practiced Thursday in the Red Wings' first on-ice session, Michael Whitaker of The Hockey News reports.

Gibson was acquired by Detroit from Anaheim back in June. Injuries have been a major theme for Gibson over the last few years, but it's a good sign that he's on the ice and apparently healthy to begin his first training camp with the Red Wings. The 32-year-old will compete with Cam Talbot for starts this year, though Gibson is the favorite to handle a starting role.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Motown bound in trade

Detroit obtained Gibson (lower body) from Anaheim on Saturday in exchange for Petr Mrazek, a second-round pick in 2027 and a fourth-round selection in 2026.

Gibson has dealt with injuries while losing playing time to Lukas Dostal in recent seasons. In 2024-25, the 31-year-old Gibson went 11-11-2 with a 2.73 GAA and .912 save percentage, but he has struggled mightily since 2019-20 as the Ducks went through a rebuild. Detroit is banking on him being able to bounce back in a different environment. Cam Talbot, who is 37, is signed for one more season at $2.5 million. Gibson should enter the 2025-26 campaign as Detroit's No. 1 netminder.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Ends season on shelf

Gibson (lower body) won't suit up versus the Jets on Wednesday.

Gibson will miss his seventh straight game to close out the season. The oft-injured netminder is under contract for another two years at a $6.4 million cap hit. He also has a 10-team no-trade list, but his name has come up in rumors for years, and those could surface again during the offseason following the emergence of Lukas Dostal as a viable No. 1 goalie in 2024-25.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Not suiting up

Gibson (lower body) won't play Tuesday versus the Wild.

It's looking less likely that Gibson will be able to return to the crease in 2024-25. This will be his sixth straight absence, and the Ducks' season finale is Wednesday in Winnipeg. Lukas Dostal will start Tuesday, and if Gibson remains out, look for Ville Husso to get the nod Wednesday.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Unavailable against Colorado

Gibson (lower body) will not suit up Sunday versus the Avalanche, according to the NHL media site.

Gibson will miss his fifth straight game, and it's unclear if he'll be available again in 2024-25. The Ducks have two games left on their schedule after Sunday. Ville Husso will continue to operate in the No. 2 netminding role while Gibson is out.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Out again Wednesday

Gibson (lower body) will not be in the lineup against Calgary on Wednesday, Derek Lee of The Hockey News reports.

Since Ville Husso is getting the nod Wednesday, it will almost certainly be Lukas Dostal who defends the road cage against the Kings on Thursday in the second half of the back-to-back. As such, Gibson is unlikely to get another shot to rejoin the lineup until Sunday's clash with Colorado at the earliest -- though it's possible the Ducks decide to just shut the veteran backstop down for the rest of the year.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Won't dress against Oilers

Gibson (lower body) will not be in the lineup versus Edmonton on Monday, Derek Lee of The Hockey News reports.

Gibson has been limited to just six appearances in the Ducks' 23 games since returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off, going 2-2-0 with a 3.07 GAA and .900 save percentage. Even if Gibson was healthy, he may have needed to settle for a spot on the bench down the stretch in favor of Lukas Dostal.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Unavailable Saturday

Gibson (lower body) won't be in the lineup for Saturday's road game versus Vancouver.

Gibson will miss at least one game after getting injured in Thursday's 4-1 loss to Calgary. He has posted a record of 11-11-2 with a 2.77 GAA and a .911 save percentage through 29 appearances this season. Ville Husso will be Lukas Dostal's backup in Saturday's lineup.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Injured again Thursday

Gibson (lower body) won't finish Thursday's game versus the Flames.

It's been a recurring theme in recent years for Gibson to have a parade of injuries late in the season. This is his third injury since the 4 Nations Face-Off break. The 31-year-old allowed three goals on 26 shots over the first two periods of the contest and is in line to take the loss if the Ducks' offense can't cover his damage. If the injury is even moderate, he may be shut down for the season, as the Ducks have just seven games on the schedule after Thursday.
