This Golden-Milk Shake takes inspiration from golden milk, a traditional Indian beverage of warmed milk, turmeric and spices. Instead of enjoying it warm, we cool it down by adding a frozen banana and whirl it up in the blender for a thick and creamy dessert. Like the warm drink, this vibrant beverage offers plenty of turmeric for its anti-inflammatory benefits. These are the key tips we learned while developing and testing this recipe in our Test Kitchen to make sure it works, tastes great and is good for you too! 

  • To get the best creamy, thick texture, make sure you use a frozen banana. It’s easier to freeze banana slices instead of blending a whole frozen banana or slicing a banana once it’s frozen. 
  • If you prefer, nondairy milk can be used instead of regular milk. Almond, coconut, soy or oat milk are all good alternatives. Be sure that whatever you use has no added sugars.

  • Bananas add natural sweetness to this recipe, so there’s no need for added sugars. They also provide potassium, a blood pressure–lowering mineral that most of us don’t get enough of. 
  • Turmeric is a rich source of curcumin, an anti-inflammatory compound that may reduce symptoms of inflammatory diseases like arthritis. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory action may also relieve symptoms of depression and protect against certain cancers. We pair turmeric and ground pepper together in this recipe, as black pepper can help the body absorb curcumin better.

Original recipe (1X) yields 1 servings

  • 1 medium banana, sliced and frozen

  • cup reduced-fat milk (2%)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • ¾ teaspoon ground turmeric, plus more for garnish

  • teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • teaspoon ground pepper

Directions

  1. Add frozen banana slices, ⅔ cup milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla, ¾ teaspoon turmeric and ⅛ teaspoon each cinnamon and pepper to a blender. Process until smooth, about 45 seconds.

  • Is this Golden-Milk Shake healthy?

    Yes! This milkshake has no added sugar and uses only banana to sweeten the flavor. We also use reduced-fat milk instead of whole milk, which has more calories. If you prefer, you can use low-fat milk (1%) or even skim milk, but keep in mind this will make the milkshake less creamy.

  • Can I use fresh turmeric?

    While fresh turmeric offers big, bright flavor, we prefer using ground turmeric in this recipe. It mixes more smoothly with cold ingredients, whereas fresh turmeric shines best in recipes that involve heat, allowing its flavor to infuse more fully.
