Tips from the EatingWell Test Kitchen

These are the key tips we learned while developing and testing this recipe in our Test Kitchen to make sure it works, tastes great and is good for you too!

  • While the recipe calls for fig jam, you can achieve excellent results with any flavor of preserves, such as blackberry, strawberry, raspberry or apricot. Feel free to experiment by adding crushed nuts or chopped dried fruit. You can swap out the goat cheese for brie, mascarpone or another favorite soft cheese.
  • To work with store-bought frozen puff pastry more easily, let it sit out of the box for about 10 minutes before rolling it out with a rolling pin on a pastry mat or work surface. Make sure to dust your work surface with a little flour to prevent the dough from sticking. You can do this while your oven is preheating.
  • Cutting the pastry log into 10 pieces will be much easier and cleaner if you use a sharp knife and wipe the knife down with a towel between cuts.

Nutrition Notes

  • Goat cheese brings tangy and creamy elements to this puff pastry appetizer. Like other types of cheese, it also adds some muscle-building protein and bone-strengthening calcium. It even contributes some probiotics, those good-for-your gut bacteria.
  • Fig jam is sweet and pairs perfectly with savory notes—like goat cheese. While the jam isn't going to add a lot of nutrition beyond a few grams of carbohydrates, figs themselves will give you some gut-friendly fiber and inflammation-busting antioxidants.
  • Puff pastry makes this appetizer hard to turn down with all of its golden, flaky layers. It adds some carbohydrates to this recipe. If you want to make this app gluten-free, Schär brand makes a gluten-free puff pastry—it even made our list of the best puff pastries.

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 10 servings

  • 1 frozen puff pastry, thawed

  • 6 tablespoons fig jam

  • 1 (4-ounce) log goat cheese

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Stack 2 large baking sheets on top of each other (this will help keep the bottom from burning) and line with parchment paper. Lay 1 frozen puff pastry on another sheet of parchment and roll it out to about 12 inches. Evenly spread 6 tablespoons jam over the pastry, leaving 1/2 inch of 1 edge bare for sealing. Crumble 4 ounces of goat cheese on top of the jam. Brush the bare edge with water to help it stick. Starting at the opposite edge, roll the pastry into a log; place seam-side down on a small cutting board and freeze until firm enough to slice, 20 to 30 minutes.

  2. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 10 pieces. Transfer the slices to the prepared baking sheet. Bake until golden brown on the edges, 23 to 25 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it easier to work with puff pastry or phyllo dough?

Puff pastry is all ready for you to work with. It's thicker, easier and more forgiving than phyllo dough sheets and doesn't dry out as easily. With phyllo dough, you need to brush butter on each sheet and stack them, and you must work quickly before it starts cracking.

  • How should I store leftover Fig & Goat Cheese Puff Pastry Rolls?

If you have leftovers, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 days. It's quick and easy to warm them up in the toaster or conventional oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes. Refrain from using the microwave—the pastry will get soggy.

  • Can I freeze Fig & Goat Cheese Puff Pastry Rolls?

Absolutely! After baking and cooling, they can be stored in a freezer-safe container or bag for about 3 months. This way, you'll always have a delicious appetizer ready for impromptu guests or whenever you want to enjoy a little something special.

  • What should I serve with Fig & Goat Cheese Puff Pastry Rolls?

This appetizer is perfect for holiday gatherings or anytime you'll be entertaining. You can serve it alongside a charcuterie board, and it pairs well with dry red or white wine, as well as sparkling mineral waters with citrus overtones like grapefruit, lime or lemon. Pomegranate drinks also complement it nicely. Avoid pairing it with overly sweet beverages.
