Join us for Phorid Fly Research and Extension Update, a one-hour discussion providing residents with information on Penn State’s most recent research and extension activities related to phorid flies’ Integrated Pest Management (IPM) solutions for mushroom farms.
The mushroom phorid fly, Megaseila halterata continues to plague residents and mushroom farms in southeastern Chester County, Maryland, Delaware. From 2019-2021 the Mushroom Fly Research Team performed field experiments to develop natural attract and kill stations on mushroom farms to control mushroom fly populations. In the first year of field trials, fly populations were eliminated on the test farm. Preliminary data from multiple farms suggest that early adoption of attract and kill stations can significantly reduce fly populations on farms. Here we present the results from recent field experiments, update the community on our progress, and discuss current and future projects.
