Emory's Past Picks
Philadelphia got pushed around on both sides of the ball last weekend vs the Giants. It was eye-popping to see in real time. Which makes this upcoming matchup vs a formidable Vikings squad ever so important. I would expect the Eagles to come out playing the best game offensively, especially in the trenches. And their best game on the defensive side of the ball as well, getting to Carson Wentz numerous times.
What gives me confidence in the Rams in this game over the resurgent Jaguars, is the fact that they have consistency in their approach on both sides of the ball. It feels like week to week, there's nothing the same from the Jags, which will ultimately hurt them in this matchup vs Los Angeles.
Lafayette is in the midst of a very good season so far and is looking to make their case even stronger for an FCS playoff at-large bid. I like how QB Dean DeNobile has played this season and his Leopards have the ability to score the ball. Oregon State has already fired their coach and looks checked out at this point. Expect this game to be a lot closer than the experts think.
Texas Tech's defense should be the main story of their remarkable season. What's funny is that despite their success so far, no one is talking enough about how good this team is on both sides of the ball. With Arizona State coming in with questions at QB, it makes this touchdown spread much more digestible than not.
Offensively speaking, the Rebels can score in bunches. Coming off of a bye week with a two weeks to prepare for Boise, should do well for the defensive side of the ball. Boise will have their hands full trying to curtail all of the eye candy they get from UNLV and expect them to hit the Broncos up for some big plays in the run game.
The Rebels upset Georgia last season at home and was able to use that game to springboard into the team we currently see. Maybe last week was a bit of a lookahead trap game spot, but expect them to be razor focused heading on the road against Georgia. On top of that, I don't believe Georgia is playing all that consistently to be favored by this much vs this particular team.
Temple's offense has been impressive in the first season under coach K.C. Keeler. He's gotten the most out of this group this year. Where there still is growth opportunity, is on the defensive side of the ball. Facing Charlotte is a great opportunity for the Temple defense to build some confidence.
This is a very good Lindenwood team. They're undefeated in conference play and are built really well on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Although this Tennessee Tech team is playing insane ball right now, they'll find it tough to cover this nearly four touchdown spread against a solid Lions squad.
A few breaks here and there, and we're talking about a Bison team that is right in the thick of the Patriot League race. Offensively speaking, they can beat you with the run game and/or their passing attack. You can't say the same about the Big Red offense, which has struggled mightily in each game this season.
Illinois State is a point of attack team whose foundation is built upon that under coach Brock Spack. Also, I like the stable of RBs they have in the backfield to help them lean on, and subsequently wear down opponents in that regard. Love them at home against a Penguins squad that struggles with inconsistency on defense.
Georgetown is coming off of a bye week after their thrilling, hail mary victory over Morgan State. What's lost in that amazing finish, was how they were getting moved around the line of scrimmage throughout the game. Expect that to be the case here vs Colgate, who also has the ability to strike with explosiveness on offense.
What's interesting about this matchup is how the LSU tigers are underdogs vs Vandy. But when you watch the games, you can understand how the oddsmakers came to that conclusion. And to be honest, it's the main reason why I can back them in this spot: QB Diego Pavia. He's simply playing better right now than is Garrett Nussmeier, and that alone is worth the 2.5 points.
The Warriors have been in a bunch of tightly contested games so far this season. Even in games vs FBS opponents, they've been able to hold their own and nearly pulled off the upset vs Kent State. The number is what's important here, and although I am super high on the Crimson this season, Merrimack's point of attack play will help them keep this within the number.
This Georgia Tech team is solid on both sides of the ball. What makes them a live option to go undefeated, is their star QB Haynes King and how he's able to rise to the occasion. What gives me confidence in them vs Duke, is how they play defensively. Expect them to get a couple of key stops in critical situations and Haynes King will do the rest.
Jim Mora Jr. has done a masterful job with this Huskies program. He has these guys on the brink of getting to back-to-back bowl games, which hasn't been done since 2008-2009. They play great defense and solid offense on both ends. Boston College hasn't been good defensively this season and I don't foresee them slowing down the Huskies.
