CONTOUR LINE DRAWING
• What is a Contour Line?
• Contour means ‘outline’.
• A contour line is simply an outline
drawing of the edges of a shape or
object.
• It is a continuous line drawing where the
artist draws the outside edges or contours
of the object.
CONTOUR
What is a Contour Line
Drawing?
• A contour line drawing is a type
of art that uses these lines to
create a two-dimensional
representation of a three-
dimensional object or scene.
CONTOUR
Contour Line Drawing
• The purpose of a contour line drawing is to capture the
essence of a subject by emphasizing its most important
features, such as its shape, form, and texture.
• A more complex contour line
drawing shows more detail with
the use of interior lines to create
detail.
• A simple contour line
drawing has clean,
connected lines focusing on
the shape of the object.
Types of Contour Line Drawing
There are four different techniques used for
drawing using Contour lines:
1. BLIND CONTOUR
A Blind contour line is created by drawing an object while
looking ONLY at the object and Not at the paper.
Types of Contour Line Drawing
2. CONTINUOUS LINE CONTOUR
A Continuous contour line is created by drawing an object
without lifting the pencil or pen from the paper.
Done using one long continuous line.
This technique can be done 100% blind or you may look at
your paper..
Types of Contour Line Drawing
3. CROSS CONTOUR LINE
Cross contour lines are created by drawing parallel lines
across the subject following its form.
Used to make an object appear three-dimensional and is
often used in figure drawing.
Types of Contour Line Drawing
4. MODIFIED CONTOUR LINE
The artist looks carefully at the edge of the object and
occasionally at the paper while drawing. Look at the paper to
place your pencil when starting a new line.
Drawing is done slowly using one continuous line while capturing
as much detail as possible.
Multiple lines may used instead of one line.
Drawing Tools used in Contour
Line Drawing
Contour line drawing can be done using several mark
making/drawing tools such as:
Different grades of pencils can be used to create different
tones. Hard pencils (H pencils) make lighter lines while the soft
pencils (B pencils) make darker and bolder lines.
• Graphite pencils
• Coloured pencils
• Drawing pens
• Markers
• Charcoal
• a brush.
