Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main purpose of TANEO?

TANEO acts as the state’s central coordinating body for the development and deployment of advanced nuclear reactors and associated industries’ projects in Texas.  TANEO is responsible for creating a strategic plan for the development of the advanced nuclear energy industry in Texas; serves as a single point of contact for project developers navigating state and local permitting processes; and administers the nation’s largest state-level fund designed to support the development and advancement of the nuclear energy industry and its associated manufacturing and supply chain industries in Texas.

In 2023, Governor Greg Abbott directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas to create the Texas Advanced Nuclear Reactor Energy Working Group to study the advanced nuclear energy industry and provide recommendations and strategies to position Texas as No. 1 in the advanced nuclear energy industry.

Under Governor Abbott’s leadership, with the support of the Working Group’s final report, House Bill 14 (HB 14) passed the 89th Texas Legislature in 2025. Authored by Representative Cody Harris and Senator Charles Schwertner, HB 14 established the Texas Advanced Nuclear Energy Office (TANEO) within the Office of the Governor and appropriated $350 million for the Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund.
