23.10.2025 — The volume of letters processed by La Poste Group has fallen by 70% over the past 18 years. At the same time, parcel volumes, driven in part by e-commerce, have risen sharply. These developments are not only a challenge for the French postal operator, but reflect a global trend. How can postal operators respond to these changing user behaviours while continuing to ensure seamless, cost-efficient communication between citizens? To discuss these questions and share best practices, twenty directors of African postal operators met at La Poste’s headquarters in Paris from 15 to 17 April 2025 for a triangular exchange organized by the Direction des Relations Européennes et Internationales (DREI) and the UPU.

21.10.2025 — Back in 2023, the UPU’s State of the Postal Sector Report identified artificial intelligence (AI) as a “beacon of hope” for the international postal industry. The report explored how the technology can be used for more than just automation and efficiency gains. AI presents an opportunity for hyper-collaboration between multiple ecosystemic stakeholders, ushering in a new era of sustainable postal development and helping to rectify the imbalances in both national and international postal development.

While urban consumers increasingly benefit from fast e-commerce delivery, many remote regions remain underserved by traditional supply chains.

10.10.2025 — 10 October (Berne, Switzerland) – Following the UPU’s press release of 6 September, the latest UPU data on postal flows shows that the negative impact on volumes to the United States of America remains significant, five weeks after the US suspension of the duty-free de minimis exemption on 29 August.

19.09.2025 — Dubai, 19 September 2025 – Reyyan Demiriz, a 15-year-old girl from Türkiye, has taken first prize in the 54th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People, organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU). This year’s competition received more than 1.6 million letters from 65 countries.

19.09.2025 — UPU member countries attending the 28th Universal Postal Congress voted to allow the State of Palestine additional rights to participate in UPU decision-making processes as an observer.

19.09.2025 — The UPU’s 28th Universal Postal Congress closed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, today, providing the UN specialized agency with the mandate and resources needed to drive the transformation of the postal network over the next four years.

18.09.2025 — 18 September 2025, Dubai – Japan’s Masahiko Metoki has been re-elected as Director General of the UN specialized agency responsible for international postal cooperation and development, while Slovenia’s Marjan Osvald has been re-elected as its Deputy Director General for the next four years.  

17.09.2025 — The UN specialized agency for postal development will be guided by a new vision and direction for 2026-2029, as decided by member countries attending the organization’s 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai.

16.09.2025 — UPU member countries attending the 28th Universal Postal Congress have approved changes to the organization’s multilateral framework for postal financial services, extending the UPU’s support to a wider set of optional postal financial services.
