This chapter discusses why the author felt compelled to undertake a study of post-2002 Gujarat. Initially, like many others, the author accepted the media's portrayal of Modi being complicit in the 2002 riots. However, having covered many past riots herself, the author knew that media reports cannot be fully trusted without personal verification, as they are often colored by ideological biases. Her experiences also showed that both the BJP and Congress were complicit in past riots. This pushed her to visit Gujarat herself to understand the situation firsthand, rather than make judgments based on others' reports without verification.
