UNSUNG HERO OF

ADITI NAGAR
rime Minister Naren-
dra Modi and the
State of Emergency
declared in India in
on June 25 1975 rep-
resent pivotal moments in India’s
political history, reflecting con-
trasting approaches to governance
and democracy. Exactly 5 decades
ago, this very day in 1975, Indian
democracy was at its lowest ebb.
For the then PM — Indira Gandhi
— of the Congress, had declared a
state of Emergency in the nation,
claiming outward intervention in
destabilising the nation. On Mon-
day, on the starting of 50th year of
Emergency, PM Modi — called the
time of Emergency a ‘black spot’
of our democratic history. Naren-
dra Modi, India’s PM since 2014,
is known for his decisive leader-
ship and transformative policies.
Under his tenure, India has seen
significant economic reforms, and
a robust foreign policy aimed at
enhancing India’s global stature.
Modi’s leadership style is charac-
terised by strong communication
skills and an emphasis on national
pride and cultural heritage.
In stark contrast, the state of
Emergency declared by PM Indira
Gandhi in 1975 marked one of the
darkest chapters in India’s demo-
cratic journey. By the time Emer-
gency was lifted, Modi had an
experience that no one had and his
vision, as a political worker, had
also become grand. But how could
‘Narendra’ carry it all out through
the Emergency? Weren’t the pry-
ing cops and intelligence opera-
tives on the lookout for everyone
related to RSS. Modi’s simplistic
approach to this problem also
shows his brilliant handling of
otherwise troublesome matters.
Donning a Sikh-turban and specks,
Modi changed his name from Nar-
endra to Prakash.
Modi’s leadership is often
viewed through the lens of demo-
cratic governance and economic
development, whereas the emer-
gency era under Gandhi symbol-
izes authoritarianism and the ero-
sion of democratic freedoms.

mergency was a dark chapter in the
history of Indian democracy and
most of the leaders of the time were
jailed. There was a gag on freedom of speech
and expression. We were in jail and from
inside the prisons we used to hear that the
underground movement in Gujarat was run-
ning very successfully, and this was led by
none other than a young Narendra Modi. He
is so sharp-minded and thinks so differently
that he could beat the police watch easily
even during those times, and his work of or-
ganising and uniting people against Emer-
gency continued unabated. He wrote, trans-
lated and distributed literature, he held meet-
ings, he took care of the families of the jailed
leaders and activists, he undertook relief
measures for the needy, he generated public
opinion, he did
all himself and
yet was able to
dodge the police
s u c c e s s f u l l y.
Such was his or-
g a n i s a t i o n a l
skills and strate-
gic wisdom seen
from his early
days. One such
popular instance
that comes to
mind is during
the meetings he
took in those days of Emergency, people en-
tered the meeting halls with their slippers
and sandals left outside the door in order. He
immediately asked them to drop this tradi-
tional practice of keeping their shoes outside
and instead hide them or bring them in, as
that would have raised po-
lice suspicion and they
would be caught holding
clandestine meetings,
which were designated ‘il-
legal’ due to Emergency. It
was Modi’s tactical acumen
that all through the Emer-
gency he remained out of
clutches of police and kept
afloat relevance of organi-
sation through his incessant
underground activities.
ome people mould with the times,
some people change time. Modiji
falls in the latter category, who has
changed time with his grit, determination
and bitter struggle. I always maintain that
the height of his success lies in the blisters
of struggle in his feet. I remember during
Emergency, when we were in jail, we used
to hear that Rajju Bhaiya (RSS Pracharak)
had gone underground to continue his so-
cial activities in hiding, away from the
police glare. We heard a lot about how
food, ration, medicines and other essential
necessities to him were supplied in a clan-
destine way and how he managed
his activities, like organising campaigns
from his hideout. Once it was the end of
Emergency and
we came out of
jails, I went
straight to Rajju
Bhaiya to know
from him how he
managed those
dark days in hid-
ing. One of the
highpoints of the
c o n v e r s a t i o n
was the repeated
reference to
Modi, which Ra-
jju Bhaiya men-
tioned. That was the first time I heard
about someone called Modi. Who or how
he was, I had no idea. Rajju Bhaiya said
his hideout was safe and provided for by
the initiative of one person, an RSS kar-
yakarta, who went by the Modi surname,
who did all to ensure that he remained safe
and facilitated. Modiji was just an ordinary
RSS volunteer at that time, even whose
full name was not known to many. Many
years later, around 1993, there was a big
rally taking place in Vadodara. On the
stage, behind all the big leaders and party
functionaries, sat a man in a nondescript
outfit. A friend of mine pointed him out to
me and said, what you see here today, the
mega rally, it is the brainchild of that per-
son you see behind on the stage. He is the
architect of the whole event. I asked him
his name. He told me, he is Narendra Modi?
I was taken aback? Is he same Modi who
had helped Rajju Bhaiya so meticulously
during the Emergency and about whom he
was speaking so highly of? Not only that,
during Emergency this man Narendra Modi
had also gone underground and played a
major role in uniting anti-Emergency and
pro-democratic forces. This was the begin-
ning of the rise of Narendra Modi.
here are many aspects of Naren-
dra Modi which many people are
still not so aware of and one such
aspect is his role during the days of Emer-
gency. He was young then but his intelli-
gence,foresightednessandorganisational
skills were already showing the way his
future was destined for. I was reading the
bookcalled‘ApatkalkeSenani:Narendra
Modi’where I found how his actions dur-
ingthosedaysreflectedhisout-of-the-box
thinking and the positive approach to-
wards finding solutions to crises instead
of backtracking or getting nervous in
tough situations. There is a small incident
mentioned in the book which had a big
impact in generating public opinion dur-
ing the Emergency. Modi ji found that
transferring and circulating important
documents within the organisation or to
placeswheretheywereneededwasahaz-
ardoustaskasthechanceofgettingcaught
was high. He planned it so that only chil-
dren would carry such files in their bags
and such other unsuspicious ways instead
of adult members of the organisation do-
ing the act. Adult members were more
prone to be checked and gagged by the
police while children were more likely to
be considered innocuous and thus ig-
nored. Modiji’s plan worked exactly the
way he had envisaged. For days on end,
children of the organisation worked as
safe transporters of those important files
and papers that no one was able to detect
and seize. I recommend this book to all
youngsters to know better about Modiji
and take inspiration from his work culture
and meticulous planning.
uring the dark days of Emer-
gency years 1975 to 1977, Modi
ji devised numerous ways to
stave off police danger to him and keep
working to re-establish
democratic forces in the
country. He was the
member of Lok Sang-
harsh Samiti and once it
fell upon him to address
students at an engineer-
ing college to raise sup-
port for the anti-Emer-
gency campaign. He
exhorted them that the
minimum they could do
was to spread anti-
Emergency slogans and slogans to re-
lease Jai Prakash Narayan etc. through
wall graffities or other such means of
public influence. To this the students said
how could they do that amid such draco-
nian policing? They would be caught if
they took out rallies or painted walls with
slogans. Modiji instantly thought of a
plan and told them, you are engineering
students. Why don’t you make frames
(grooves) containing the stencils of those
slogans? Just take them to the walls, and
imprint your slogans on the walls. It will
be swift and easy and evade instant scru-
tiny. This actually worked. The students
in large numbers used these small steel
moulds (frames) and easily posted their
slogans in public places, using ink and
colours, thus generating much public
awareness against the government and
Emergency. One stroke of ingenuity of
Modiji worked wonders. I urge all
youngsters to read the book ‘Apatkal ke
Senani: Narendra Modi’ to know about
those days and Modi ji’s role in it. It is
essential to know about Emergency so
that no one dares to impose Emergency
again. It is essential to know about the
intention and governance policy of those
who imposed Emergency on the country,
which is why I suggest everyone to read
the book once and know the reality be-
hind those fearful days.

When we attended the event, we
found all the front rows were oc-

‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’ UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI — PART 88
y first interaction with
PM Modi sir was during
Patel run in Delhi. We
shared the stage together. So, af-
ter the event he asked me many
things and during the conversa-
tion I conveyed to him the differ-
ent problems of athletes in the
country. To this, the PM respond-
ed immediately and called his PA,
urging me to explain the things to
that person so that action could be
taken up immediately. I was sur-
prised that the PMO itself took
cognizance of our issues and so
promptly took steps to solve
them. I also found for the first
time that Modi ji was deeply in-
terested in sports and knew about
every athlete and his/her perfor-
mance. I came to know that be-
fore every major championship,
the PM himself calls up the ath-
lete/athletes concerned to moti-
vate them and wish them the best
for the event, and big send-offs
are organised regularly. Even af-
ter every championship we are
celebrating each victory in a big
way due to the personal initiative
of the PM, which was never the
way earlier. And more than that,
because of the interest and in-
volvement of the PM, there has
been a lot of change in our system
over these years of the Modi gov-
ernment. Lot of good infrastruc-
ture is coming up and competitive
events are being organised even
at the grassroots level in remote
areas to bring out hidden talents
to the mainstream. This is a major
boost for the country’s sports
prospects. All athletes are happy
because we have never seen such
aggressive branding and promo-
tion of sports in India before. This
momentum that has been created
by the PM will continue and go a
long way in taking the country
forward in this sphere. The sup-
port we are getting now from the
system is unprecedented. The PM
takes personal interest in all our
affairs, even our family’s well-
being, and talks to us like a friend
so that we feel confident and rest
assured that we don’t have any
trouble in perusing our profes-
sions with utmost dedication and
diligence, since the prime minis-
ter of the country is behind us
with all his support.
remember, when Pramod
Mahajan ji passed away
and I was in Dadar for his
funeral, I met Modi ji for the first
time. There were several minis-
ters of the Central government in
attendance at the solemn occa-
sion. Modi ji was the Chief Min-
ister of Gujarat at that time. A
small makeshift stage was rigged
up at the venue where the minis-
ters and CMs were to be seated.
The front rows were reserved for
the Union ministers, CMs and
senior leaders of the BJP, while
the seats for the MPs, including
me, and other lesser VIPs were
behind them. I was a young MP,
all of 27 years, elected to the Par-
liament for the first time. Under-
standably, very few people knew
me or recognised me. Modi ji was
seated just in front of me…the
distance between his chair and
mine was minimal.As a courtesy,
I stood up and greeted him with
folded hands. I saw him sitting
and then cleaning his eyeglasses.
Soon after that, he turned around
and said, ‘Milind bhai, how are
you?’ I was shocked and sur-
prised to realise that he knew who
I was. Then he asked me whether
the place we were in at that time
fell under my constituency or my
neighbouring constituency. So, I
instantly felt he was very aware
of things happening not just
around him but in the field of
geo-politics beyond his immedi-
ate realm of affairs too and it
came to me that he was a man
with his ears very much to the
ground. I also realised in my sub-
sequent meetings with him that
he recognises you, remembers
you and puts the right name to
your face, which is very neces-
sary in public life and the hall-
mark of great leadership. What is
a matter of great joy for our fam-
ily is that when Modi ji went to
Houston to campaign for Donald
Trump and he addressed the In-
dian diaspora at the NRG stadium
there, at that time there was a
tweet by him that said that he was
missing his friend Murli Deora ji
at this time who had took a lot of
effort to strengthen ties between
India and the US. Murli bhai must
be very proud of this. He said,
when Modi ji is respected world-
wide, it is not just Modi’s triumph
but the triumph of India. Through
the PM, the entire 140 crore peo-
ple of India are getting that re-
spect. My friend Murli Deora
must be very proud of all the hard
work he did to improve the rela-
tions between the two countries,
Modi ji said. This was a moment
of pride for us in the family as
well as in the party and in our
supporters. We realised that Modi
ji has the ability to rise to the oc-
casion and rise above party lines
to give credit to people where
they merit it, for his larger focus
remains steadfast on what is good
for the country and humanity.
s soon as I Joined the BJP,
I got the opportunity to
meet PM Modi ji on the
stage. He gave a speech on the oc-
casion.Iwasobserving,andyouall
mustbeknowingthatModijiestab-
lishesaninstantbondwiththeaudi-
ence when he speaks. The human
connect is impeccable. He feels the
pulse of the people and knows ex-
actlywhattosaytothem.Heknows
how to connect with the audience
and involve them. This is the great-
est attribute of a leader who can
connect with his people. See, I am
also an actor. And for a long time at
that.We actors also tend to develop
an understanding of the people we
meet and talk to and know if they
are genuine and original in their
thought,approachandintentionsor
fake. Modi sir is so natural. He is
naturally affable. While we were
leaving the state, he called me and
said, Mithun da, I want to speak
with you. I was quite surprised.
Taking out time from his busy
schedule,hesatwithmeforover10
minutes. And in those 10 minutes,
he explained to me so many things,
guiding me through the complex
alleys of politics enumerating what
I should do and what I shouldn’t.
Then he called his secretary and
asked him to provide his personal
number to me. Simultaneously, he
also advised me to call him up di-
rectly without hesitation whenever
I felt the need. I was overwhelmed
by his gesture. He left after the
event, but those 10 minutes were
charismatic and remain etched in
my mind forever. It is not just be-
cause he was the PM talking to me
personally in a friendly manner but
because of his responsiveness and
his natural behaviour, which creat-
ed an impact on me.The maximum
time, if I remember correctly, he
ever took to respond to me is 23
minutes. Once I sent him a text
message and he was in a different
timezone,perhapsinGermany,and
he took that much time to respond.
Even if he is busy at a time, he
wouldusuallyreply,saying‘tomor-
row’or give another time. His nor-
mal turnaround time is not more
than 10-15 minutes. Who am I in
the party? I may be a known actor,
but in the party, I am nothing, just a
karyakarta. Why would the PM be
concerned about me? But such is
Modi sir’s nature. When he has
asked me to consult in case of any
problem and committed to help me
out, he would stand by it, no matter
what.That’sthekindofresponsive-
nessthatbehovesagreatleader.Not
just me, he will never reply to any-
one with vague statements like

he second year of Sangh Siksha Varg
was being held at Agroha in Haryana’s
Hisar. It was in June 1992. Narendra
Modi ji was also present at the event and he took
a lecture session there. At the end he asked the
delegates that if they had something to ask or
discuss with him, they could do so. At that time
I felt like asking
a question that
had cropped in
my mind. I
asked him, it is
very hot here
but why are you
wearing two
vests? To this
Narendra ji said,
who told you
so? No, I am not
wearing two.
But I said, yes
you are wearing
two. Then he
asked, how did
you come to know? I told him the strap which
was visible on the sides of his shoulders showed
two of them, one under the other. To this he then
explained the reason to me. He said, see I wear
a dhoti and ride a bicycle. That is my life. Now
often times the end of the dhoti gets tied to the
chain of the cycle and gets torn. I try to protect
it as best as I can, yet there is always a possibil-
ity of an end of my dhoti getting entangled in
the chain. Thus, when it is torn, there is no point
wearing it anymore. It is then that I fold it, make
it double and get a vest stitched with the same.
Now this vest has some holes in it but it will
serve for sometime more. Then I will not throw
it away. I will use it to clean my shoes, he said.
I was astonished to hear all this. Sundar Singh
Bhandari ji was present there during the conver-
sation. He then asked him, but why do you do
this dhoti to vest thing? Here Modi ji said, do
you know, there are lakhs of people in the coun-
try who don’t have a piece of cloth on their
body. We should make good use of what soci-
ety has given us, instead of unnecessary wast-
age. On that day I realised that a person who has
such high thoughts for the country and society,
will do great for the country once the time
comes.
nce I suggested to Modi ji that I wanted
to publish another book that would be
on the manifesto of the BJP for that
year’s elections. I had seriously thought that
such a book was needed to deliver to the people
the manifestos salience in greater detail. But to
my surprise,
Modi ji outright
dismissed the
idea as unfruit-
ful. He told me,
the explanation
of the party
manifesto won’t
have any deep
impact on the
people. They
will gloss over
it and put it
aside. He rather
gave me a to-
tally different
perspective. He
said, if you want to publish something, take up
issues that affect people. For instance, publish
a book on the water amenities in different ar-
eas and then, compare it with the perspectives
of different political parties
on the same issue and how
they are going to solve it or
what they have done on it.
Tell people how different
parties are approaching the
same issue. That will really
help people understand what
actually we are doing for
them differently. It struck me
as a novelty that would work.
I realised instantly that a
manifesto is a regular affair
that every party brings out. It
was Modi ji’s innovative idea
of connecting it to issues of
the common man and how
other parties were doing on
them that really worked in
the end.
nce I got a call from the
president of the Umiya
Mata temple. He said you
hold big government programmes
all the time. If possible, also help
us organise an upcoming event of
Umiya Mata ji in our community. I
assured him of looking into the
matter and trying my best and sub-
sequently brought the matter to the
attention of Modi ji. Modi ji imme-
diately said, it is a social work for
the uplift of the community and
society and we must help them. So,
I took upon the responsibility and
started planning. We decided to or-
ganise yagnas and darshans for the
five days of the event along with
some activities for the uplift of the
community like rozgaar mela (em-
ployment fair), education seminar,
exhibitions etc. We took the plan to
CM Modi for a presentation. The
temple committee members, trus-
tees etc. were present there. I
showed him the plan on my laptop.
He saw the whole presentation with
rapt attention and then said at the
end, people in your community are
farmers. Kadwa Patidars have land
holdings and they do farming on
them. People may not listen to me
or you but they will certainly listen
to the goddess. To address global
warming and water scarcity issues,
try to have the devotees take a
pledge in front of the goddess that
if one has 10-acre land, at least on
one or two acres he would use drip
irrigation technique or deploy
sprinklers. You won’t believe, as
we took forward the initiative sug-
gested by the Chief Minister, no
less than 1.5 lakh farmers took the
pledge in front of the goddess in
those five days of the event and
filled out a form to adopt drip irri-
gation technology.

the early 2000s Ratan Tata
had said in some context
that you are stupid if you are invest-
ing in Gujarat. It was around this
time, in 2003-2204 that Modi ji
startedtheVibrantGujaratinitiative
to woo industrialists to invest in the
state. It was known as Vibrant Gu-
jarat Investment Summit, and in
2007, Modi ji told me that I have

conference that if the West Bengal
government is unable to provide
land and if the locals in Singur are
unwillingtoallowinvestmentinthe
Nano plant, I will try to convince
my stakeholders and won’t mind

important lead for the Gujarat CM.
He immediately sent a ‘su-swaga-
tam’(welcomegreeting)messageto
Ratan Tata. When Tata sought to
know who this message was from,
Modi ji said it is me, the CM of Gu-
jarat.Tatawassurprisedandhesaid,
please tell me what it. To this Modi
ji said, I will provide you with all

my state. Ratan Tata was a bit ap-
prehensive. He said I am already
deep in water.What’s the guarantee
thattheprojectwon’tmeetthesame
fate in Gujarat as it was seeing Ben-
gal. Modi ji said, it is my guarantee.
There won’t be any problem here.
Finally,heconvincedtheTatachair-
man and on the CM’s invitation, he
sent teams to locate a suitable site
in Gujarat. Modi ji offered them
three sites and the team finally ze-
roed in on Sanand for the automo-
bile plant. Once done, Tata had
another apprehension. He asked,
but when will the land be available
to us? Modi ji said, within 72
hours. And in 72 hours, not only
the land was ready but also all the
planning and ancillary require-
ments were finalised. Ratan Tata
came on Dussehra and signed the
papers. In the next Vibrant Gujarat
summit, theTata boss said, you are
stupid if you are not investing in

I
Tata’s tryst with Gujarat has much
to do with Modi’s Guarantee
ok Sabha election was held
soon after the Kargil War.
Many soldiers and officers of
the Army had been martyred in the war.
Modi ji asked, in Haryana can’t we give
ticket to some martyr’s wife or family
member as a tribute to his sacrifice? I
scouted for names and finally after 5-6
days zeroed in on Sudha Yadav, who
went on to win the election and become
an MP. As soon as she was given tick-
et by the party, there was a resounding
support for her in the area. But Sudha
ji neither had any political exposure or
experience, nor did she have much re-
sources to fight the polls. So, one day
Modi ji called a meeting of the kar-
yakartas to garner resources for her. He
told them that whenever he went home,
his mother always put some money into
his pocket. Being a pracharak, he didn’t
need money and so he always kept
them with him to use for some good
cause. So, for Sudha ji, he first donated
his share of money into the kalash (urn)
designated for the purpose. This moti-
vated others and donations soon started
flowing in. People enthusiastically par-
ticipated in the donation programme,
and some even pledged lakhs of rupees.
You won’t believe, within no time, we
had Rs 7 lakh in our kitty. In 1999, Rs
7 lakh was a big amount and this easily
helped us undertake the election ex-
penses to ensure Sudha ji’s win.

In a dramatic turn of events on Monday, a
reported robbery at Gopal Tower on MI Road in-

looted the substantial amount and fled, prompting an

mediate action from law enforcement, with DCP Digant
Anand and other officers rushing to the scene. How-

involved in the alleged robbery. Instead, the footage
showed only one young man, entering the flat. According
to police sources, Arjun, the son of a liquor trader likely
handed over the money to his associate and subse-
quently reported a fake robbery. After a while, the police
apprehended Arjun’s friend from Sindhi Camp, and both
individuals are now being interrogated face-to-face to

The Rajasthan BJP,
which lost 11 seats in the
LS polls, may consider
the division of votes
along caste lines as the
reason for its defeat on

Saffron party rejects caste-
based vote division argument
Review of BJP’s Lok Sabha defeat in Raj
l Weak election management
identified as primary reason for
defeat in LS polls; Candidates
seen as weak in many areas
l Focus shifts to By-election
management; Preparation to
entrust election leadership to
key figures on each seat
During LS polls in Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur,
Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, Dausa, and Sri Ganga-
nagar, various caste equations favoured differ-
ent candidates. The elections were observed to move
away from caste lines. Meena and Gurjar communities
rallied in support of Congress candidate in Dausa and
Tonk-Sawai Madhopur seats, respectively. Conversely,
Jat voters supported Congress’ Jatav candidate in
Bharatpur, departing from previous poll trends. Despite
Congress candidate Kuldeep Indora’s Dhanka caste
having minimal representation in Sri Ganganagar, he
managed to win due to historical support for candidates
of Meghwal caste.Polls in Jaipur Rural seat were also
observed to transcend caste considerations.
Jaipur: Dy CM Diya Kumari will lay foundation stone
of Sikar Road Drainage Project today. The project
will be completed at a total cost of Rs 36.62 cr, and
a new drain will be constructed from Murlipura to Dravya-
vati River on Sikar Road. The Project will be completed by
June next year as JDA has issued work orders worth Rs
26.52 cr. In Phase 1, drains costing Rs 16.09 cr on eastern
side and Rs 20.53 cr on western side of Sikar Road will be
constructed. Phase 2 will see drains from VKI to Badi-Khe-
da and Murlipura via Central Spine, costing Rs 19.21 cr.
According to BJP sources, the primary reason
for the party’s defeat on 11 seats was poor
booth management. The BJP’s organisation
was less active in Nagaur, Sikar, Churu, and Jhun-
jhunu, failing to mobilise its core voters effectively.
Despite favourable caste equations in the Barmer-
Jaisalmer seat, inadequate election management led
the BJP candidate to third place.

“Our govt had decided to
open Mahatma Gandhi

This would have started
a library movement like
Kerala in Rajasthan too.
Knowledge could have
been spread among all

unfortunate and short-

Transforming the Vicinity of Jaipur International Airport
CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ INTERNATIONAL
AIRPORT, MUMBAI
n Well-Developed Vicinity: The area around Mumbai’s airport
features a mix of luxury hotels, high-end shopping malls, and
fine dining restaurants.
n Cultural Integration**: The airport vicinity includes art instal-
lations and cultural exhibits that showcase Maharashtra’s
rich heritage.
n Transportation**: Efficient public transport links, including
the Mumbai Metro, provide seamless connectivity to the city.
KEMPEGOWDA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, BANGALORE
n Green and Modern Infrastructure**: The airport's vicinity
boasts landscaped gardens, open green spaces, and con-
temporary architectural designs.
n Business Hub**: Proximity to tech parks and business cen-
tres, attracting both business and leisure travellers.
n Local Delicacies**: The area offers a variety of eateries serv-
ing traditional South Indian cuisine, enhancing the cultural
experience for visitors.
SOME WELL DEVELOPED
NATIONAL AIRPORTS IN INDIA
These examples demonstrate how well-developed airport vicini-
ties can significantly enhance the travel experience, boost local
economies, and reflect the cultural richness of the region. By
drawing inspiration from these successful models, Jaipur Inter-
national Airport can transform its surroundings into a vibrant and
welcoming gateway to Rajasthan.
The area around Jaipur International Airport holds immense potential to enhance the overall
travel experience for visitors. By addressing the current shortcomings and implementing
strategic improvements, Jaipur can ensure that its airport vicinity truly reflects the grandeur
and hospitality of Rajasthan. A collaborative effort involving the government, local businesses,
and the community can transform this space into a vibrant and welcoming gateway, capturing
the essence of the Pink City and making a lasting impression on all who visit.
Jaipur International Airport, the 13th busiest airport in India in daily scheduled flight
operations, serves as the primary gateway for both domestic and international travellers to
Rajasthan, attracting a significant influx of tourists. The vicinity of Jaipur International
Airport, despite its significant development, fails to reflect the rich heritage and culture of
Rajasthan. Tourists, arriving with an eagerness to experience the beauty and vibrant
traditions of the Pink City, are instead greeted with inappropriate constructions, stray
animals, and chaotic surroundings. To truly represent Rajasthan’s rich culture, a master plan
is needed. This plan should ensure that the airport’s surroundings, including waiting areas,
lounges and building facades, embody the state’s artistic and cultural heritage. Proper
traffic control, elimination of stray animals, and a focus on showcasing local art, craft and
cuisine are essential. City First delves into the importance of developing the airport
surroundings, examines successful examples from other metropolitan cities and proposes
practical improvements that can be implemented by both the government and the public.
Rajasthan's
GRANDEUR?
LOW-QUALITY ESTABLISHMENTS: The existing restaurants and tea stalls are
often poorly maintained and fail to reflect the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan.
TRAFFIC AND SAFETY HAZARDS: Poorly managed parking and congested
roads not only detract from the experience but also pose safety risks.
VIP SAFETY CONCERN: The recent surge in skyline building constructions near
the airport poses significant security risks, especially for VIPs.
INADEQUATE SHOPS: Area would benefit from establishments that reflect
Rajasthan’s rich heritage, offering crafts, local cuisine, cultural exhibits. This shift
would not only improve aesthetic appeal but also enhance overall experience,
making airport vicinity a more welcoming family-friendly environment.
LACK OF AMENITIES: There is a dearth of quality shops, eateries, and facilities
catering to tourists and locals alike.
CLUTTER AND UNWANTED ELEMENTS: Car care wash shops and debris near
the State Hanger Road create a cluttered and uninviting environment.
AREA AROUND JAIPUR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HAS SEVERAL ISSUES THAT NEED ADDRESSING
Mitali Dusad
mitalidusad@firstindia.co.in
As a healthcare professional serving
Rajasthan, I've witnessed firsthand
the importance of a clean and inviting
environment around Jaipur Interna-
tional Airport. The current state, with
clutter and low-quality establishments,
not only fails to reflect our rich cultural
heritage but also poses health risks.
Enhancing this vicinity isn't just about
aesthetics; it's about ensuring the
well-being of travellers and locals alike.
Improving cleanliness and ameni-
ties will contribute positively to public
health and reinforce Jaipur's reputation
as a destination of cultural and medical
excellence.
—DR RAJDEEP NOGIA
The vicinity around Jaipur Interna-
tional Airport presents untapped
potential. The current lack of qual-
ity shops and amenities not only
hampers the tourist experience but
also limits economic opportunities
for local businesses. By developing
regulated commercial zones and
promoting cultural representation
through Rajasthani handicrafts, we
can attract more visitors and stimu-
late economic growth. This initia-
tive not only enhances the airport’s
appeal but also supports entrepre-
neurial ventures and boosts the local
economy.
—MANISHA RAMCHANDANI
As an educator dedicated to Rajasthan’s
cultural legacy, I believe transforming
the area around Jaipur International
Airport is crucial for fostering a sense of
pride and identity among students and
residents. The current clutter and lack
of amenities diminish the educational
value of our surroundings. Introducing
aesthetic improvements like murals and
green spaces will create an inspiring
environment for learning and cultural
appreciation. By engaging the commu-
nity and instilling a sense of ownership,
we can create a welcoming gateway that
celebrates Rajasthan’s heritage and
enriches educational experiences.
—ARCHANA VYAS
Rajasthan is
known for tourism,
whosoever tourist
visit india for 7
days gives nearly
2.5 days to state.
Jaipur airport is a
significant spot in
Rajasthan. The govt
should put slogans
like ‘Padharo Mhare
Des’ right outside
the airport, culture,
deserts should
be promoted and
posters should be
placed outside airport . The govt should think on these
lines as tourism will give a major boom to the state. The
govt should work and be sensitive towards this as it will
be beneficial to everyone. Work should also be done on
the small businesses running outside on plots, eater-
ies but they should be placed somewhere else first and
should be provided with opportunity, not like you snatch
the business and they have nothing to eat. It was careless
administration due to which they are there, but now they
should be careful and rather throwing them away, should
be provided a spot somewhere else.
—RAJESH KATARA, Congress Spokesperson
Jaipur airport is
totally a different
spot and it holds
importance. When
we think from the
tourist point of
view, tourism is
Rajasthan’s strong-
hold, whenever
people visit the city
from that point,
they should have
a feeling that they
are in Jaipur or Raj
which is famous
for its rich herit-
age and culture. I think our tourism will also work for its
betterment so monuments and heritage should be seen to
everyone. We will work upon this for sure. The work will be
sped up in this direction which will be visible on sometime
as well. Rajasthan bse value is tourism, all our sources
are depended on that. Our govt and tourism minister will
surely look into this side and work on it. Our govt has been
only here since months and we already have an amazing
footfall. Not only Jaipur, the development will be visible
across the state.

NaMo UNSUNG HERO OF THEEMERGENCY ADITI NAGAR rime Minister Naren- dra Modi and the State of Emergency declared in India in on June 25 1975 rep- resent pivotal moments in India’s political history, reflecting con- trasting approaches to governance and democracy. Exactly 5 decades ago, this very day in 1975, Indian democracy was at its lowest ebb. For the then PM — Indira Gandhi — of the Congress, had declared a state of Emergency in the nation, claiming outward intervention in destabilising the nation. On Mon- day, on the starting of 50th year of Emergency, PM Modi — called the time of Emergency a ‘black spot’ of our democratic history. Naren- dra Modi, India’s PM since 2014, is known for his decisive leader- ship and transformative policies. Under his tenure, India has seen significant economic reforms, and a robust foreign policy aimed at enhancing India’s global stature. Modi’s leadership style is charac- terised by strong communication skills and an emphasis on national pride and cultural heritage. In stark contrast, the state of Emergency declared by PM Indira Gandhi in 1975 marked one of the darkest chapters in India’s demo- cratic journey. By the time Emer- gency was lifted, Modi had an experience that no one had and his vision, as a political worker, had also become grand. But how could ‘Narendra’ carry it all out through the Emergency? Weren’t the pry- ing cops and intelligence opera- tives on the lookout for everyone related to RSS. Modi’s simplistic approach to this problem also shows his brilliant handling of otherwise troublesome matters. Donning a Sikh-turban and specks, Modi changed his name from Nar- endra to Prakash. Modi’s leadership is often viewed through the lens of demo- cratic governance and economic development, whereas the emer- gency era under Gandhi symbol- izes authoritarianism and the ero- sion of democratic freedoms. PERSPECT VE 02 Jaipur,Tuesday | June 25, 2024 www.firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia ‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’ UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI — PART 90 mergency was a dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy and most of the leaders of the time were jailed. There was a gag on freedom of speech and expression. We were in jail and from inside the prisons we used to hear that the underground movement in Gujarat was run- ning very successfully, and this was led by none other than a young Narendra Modi. He is so sharp-minded and thinks so differently that he could beat the police watch easily even during those times, and his work of or- ganising and uniting people against Emer- gency continued unabated. He wrote, trans- lated and distributed literature, he held meet- ings, he took care of the families of the jailed leaders and activists, he undertook relief measures for the needy, he generated public opinion, he did all himself and yet was able to dodge the police s u c c e s s f u l l y. Such was his or- g a n i s a t i o n a l skills and strate- gic wisdom seen from his early days. One such popular instance that comes to mind is during the meetings he took in those days of Emergency, people en- tered the meeting halls with their slippers and sandals left outside the door in order. He immediately asked them to drop this tradi- tional practice of keeping their shoes outside and instead hide them or bring them in, as that would have raised po- lice suspicion and they would be caught holding clandestine meetings, which were designated ‘il- legal’ due to Emergency. It was Modi’s tactical acumen that all through the Emer- gency he remained out of clutches of police and kept afloat relevance of organi- sation through his incessant underground activities. ome people mould with the times, some people change time. Modiji falls in the latter category, who has changed time with his grit, determination and bitter struggle. I always maintain that the height of his success lies in the blisters of struggle in his feet. I remember during Emergency, when we were in jail, we used to hear that Rajju Bhaiya (RSS Pracharak) had gone underground to continue his so- cial activities in hiding, away from the police glare. We heard a lot about how food, ration, medicines and other essential necessities to him were supplied in a clan- destine way and how he managed his activities, like organising campaigns from his hideout. Once it was the end of Emergency and we came out of jails, I went straight to Rajju Bhaiya to know from him how he managed those dark days in hid- ing. One of the highpoints of the c o n v e r s a t i o n was the repeated reference to Modi, which Ra- jju Bhaiya men- tioned. That was the first time I heard about someone called Modi. Who or how he was, I had no idea. Rajju Bhaiya said his hideout was safe and provided for by the initiative of one person, an RSS kar- yakarta, who went by the Modi surname, who did all to ensure that he remained safe and facilitated. Modiji was just an ordinary RSS volunteer at that time, even whose full name was not known to many. Many years later, around 1993, there was a big rally taking place in Vadodara. On the stage, behind all the big leaders and party functionaries, sat a man in a nondescript outfit. A friend of mine pointed him out to me and said, what you see here today, the mega rally, it is the brainchild of that per- son you see behind on the stage. He is the architect of the whole event. I asked him his name. He told me, he is Narendra Modi? I was taken aback? Is he same Modi who had helped Rajju Bhaiya so meticulously during the Emergency and about whom he was speaking so highly of? Not only that, during Emergency this man Narendra Modi had also gone underground and played a major role in uniting anti-Emergency and pro-democratic forces. This was the begin- ning of the rise of Narendra Modi. here are many aspects of Naren- dra Modi which many people are still not so aware of and one such aspect is his role during the days of Emer- gency. He was young then but his intelli- gence, foresightednessandorganisational skills were already showing the way his future was destined for. I was reading the bookcalled‘ApatkalkeSenani:Narendra Modi’where I found how his actions dur- ingthosedaysreflectedhisout-of-the-box thinking and the positive approach to- wards finding solutions to crises instead of backtracking or getting nervous in tough situations. There is a small incident mentioned in the book which had a big impact in generating public opinion dur- ing the Emergency. Modi ji found that transferring and circulating important documents within the organisation or to placeswheretheywereneededwasahaz- ardoustaskasthechanceofgettingcaught was high. He planned it so that only chil- dren would carry such files in their bags and such other unsuspicious ways instead of adult members of the organisation do- ing the act. Adult members were more prone to be checked and gagged by the police while children were more likely to be considered innocuous and thus ig- nored. Modiji’s plan worked exactly the way he had envisaged. For days on end, children of the organisation worked as safe transporters of those important files and papers that no one was able to detect and seize. I recommend this book to all youngsters to know better about Modiji and take inspiration from his work culture and meticulous planning. uring the dark days of Emer- gency years 1975 to 1977, Modi ji devised numerous ways to stave off police danger to him and keep working to re-establish democratic forces in the country. He was the member of Lok Sang- harsh Samiti and once it fell upon him to address students at an engineer- ing college to raise sup- port for the anti-Emer- gency campaign. He exhorted them that the minimum they could do was to spread anti- Emergency slogans and slogans to re- lease Jai Prakash Narayan etc. through wall graffities or other such means of public influence. To this the students said how could they do that amid such draco- nian policing? They would be caught if they took out rallies or painted walls with slogans. Modiji instantly thought of a plan and told them, you are engineering students. Why don’t you make frames (grooves) containing the stencils of those slogans? Just take them to the walls, and imprint your slogans on the walls. It will be swift and easy and evade instant scru- tiny. This actually worked. The students in large numbers used these small steel moulds (frames) and easily posted their slogans in public places, using ink and colours, thus generating much public awareness against the government and Emergency. One stroke of ingenuity of Modiji worked wonders. I urge all youngsters to read the book ‘Apatkal ke Senani: Narendra Modi’ to know about those days and Modi ji’s role in it. It is essential to know about Emergency so that no one dares to impose Emergency again. It is essential to know about the intention and governance policy of those who imposed Emergency on the country, which is why I suggest everyone to read the book once and know the reality be- hind those fearful days. COMPILED AND EDITED BY SHASHIKANT SHARMA remember when the first investors’ summit was held in 2003, it was greet- edwithlotsofcriticismaseveryone thought no one was going to attend the event or invest in the state at the time of global downturn. Also, it was soon after the Kutch earth- quake and people had very little expectations from Gujarat. The event was held on a much smaller scale and the venue was Tagore Hall, which had a capacity to seat not more than 700-800 people. When we attended the event, we found all the front rows were oc- cupied by government officials or political leaders and many of the industrialists or their representa- tives had to keep standing. Modi ji too must have observed this anom- aly, as was proved later. When the next summit was held, at a much granderscalethistime,andrechris- tened as Vibrant Gujarat Summit, things were completely restruc- tured under Modi ji’s guidance. All thelacunaeofthefirstsummitwere weeded out efficiently and there was no room left for any grudge or complaint from any quarter. One of the trademarks of Modi’s way of working is to innovate and make his initiatives truly world-class. He made it a point to choose a larger space this time where there would beproperseatingarrangements. He made it clear to the officials that it wasanindustryfunctionratherthan a government event and preference must be given to industrialists. He also suggested adding components to impress foreign delegates ac- cording to their preferences so that they found the right indices to in- vest in the state. Hence, the second Vibrant Gujarat had a lot of struc- tured programmes and after that, this continued during the succeed- ing summits. As a result, Vibrant Gujarat has today reached unprec- edented heights. I The restructuring of investors’ summit, the Modi way Sudhir Mehta Chairman, Torrent Group  Vol 6  Issue No. 14  RNI NO. We shared the stage together. So, af- ter the event he asked me many things and during the conversa- tion I conveyed to him the differ- ent problems of athletes in the country. To this, the PM respond- ed immediately and called his PA, urging me to explain the things to that person so that action could be taken up immediately. I was sur- prised that the PMO itself took cognizance of our issues and so promptly took steps to solve them. I also found for the first time that Modi ji was deeply in- terested in sports and knew about every athlete and his/her perfor- mance. I came to know that be- fore every major championship, the PM himself calls up the ath- lete/athletes concerned to moti- vate them and wish them the best for the event, and big send-offs are organised regularly. Even af- ter every championship we are celebrating each victory in a big way due to the personal initiative of the PM, which was never the way earlier. And more than that, because of the interest and in- volvement of the PM, there has been a lot of change in our system over these years of the Modi gov- ernment. Lot of good infrastruc- ture is coming up and competitive events are being organised even at the grassroots level in remote areas to bring out hidden talents to the mainstream. This is a major boost for the country’s sports prospects. All athletes are happy because we have never seen such aggressive branding and promo- tion of sports in India before. This momentum that has been created by the PM will continue and go a long way in taking the country forward in this sphere. The sup- port we are getting now from the system is unprecedented. The PM takes personal interest in all our affairs, even our family’s well- being, and talks to us like a friend so that we feel confident and rest assured that we don’t have any trouble in perusing our profes- sions with utmost dedication and diligence, since the prime minis- ter of the country is behind us with all his support. remember, when Pramod Mahajan ji passed away and I was in Dadar for his funeral, I met Modi ji for the first time. There were several minis- ters of the Central government in attendance at the solemn occa- sion. Modi ji was the Chief Min- ister of Gujarat at that time. A small makeshift stage was rigged up at the venue where the minis- ters and CMs were to be seated. The front rows were reserved for the Union ministers, CMs and senior leaders of the BJP, while the seats for the MPs, including me, and other lesser VIPs were behind them. I was a young MP, all of 27 years, elected to the Par- liament for the first time. Under- standably, very few people knew me or recognised me. Modi ji was seated just in front of me…the distance between his chair and mine was minimal. As a courtesy, I stood up and greeted him with folded hands. I saw him sitting and then cleaning his eyeglasses. Soon after that, he turned around and said, ‘Milind bhai, how are you?’ I was shocked and sur- prised to realise that he knew who I was. Then he asked me whether the place we were in at that time fell under my constituency or my neighbouring constituency. So, I instantly felt he was very aware of things happening not just around him but in the field of geo-politics beyond his immedi- ate realm of affairs too and it came to me that he was a man with his ears very much to the ground. I also realised in my sub- sequent meetings with him that he recognises you, remembers you and puts the right name to your face, which is very neces- sary in public life and the hall- mark of great leadership. What is a matter of great joy for our fam- ily is that when Modi ji went to Houston to campaign for Donald Trump and he addressed the In- dian diaspora at the NRG stadium there, at that time there was a tweet by him that said that he was missing his friend Murli Deora ji at this time who had took a lot of effort to strengthen ties between India and the US. Murli bhai must be very proud of this. He said, when Modi ji is respected world- wide, it is not just Modi’s triumph but the triumph of India. Through the PM, the entire 140 crore peo- ple of India are getting that re- spect. My friend Murli Deora must be very proud of all the hard work he did to improve the rela- tions between the two countries, Modi ji said. This was a moment of pride for us in the family as well as in the party and in our supporters. We realised that Modi ji has the ability to rise to the oc- casion and rise above party lines to give credit to people where they merit it, for his larger focus remains steadfast on what is good for the country and humanity. s soon as I Joined the BJP, I got the opportunity to meet PM Modi ji on the stage. He gave a speech on the oc- casion.Iwasobserving, andyouall mustbeknowingthatModijiestab- lishesaninstantbondwiththeaudi- ence when he speaks. The human connect is impeccable. He feels the pulse of the people and knows ex- actlywhattosaytothem.Heknows how to connect with the audience and involve them. This is the great- est attribute of a leader who can connect with his people. See, I am also an actor. And for a long time at that.We actors also tend to develop an understanding of the people we meet and talk to and know if they are genuine and original in their thought, approachandintentionsor fake. Modi sir is so natural. He is naturally affable. While we were leaving the state, he called me and said, Mithun da, I want to speak with you. I was quite surprised. Taking out time from his busy schedule,hesatwithmeforover10 minutes. And in those 10 minutes, he explained to me so many things, guiding me through the complex alleys of politics enumerating what I should do and what I shouldn’t. Then he called his secretary and asked him to provide his personal number to me. Simultaneously, he also advised me to call him up di- rectly without hesitation whenever I felt the need. I was overwhelmed by his gesture. He left after the event, but those 10 minutes were charismatic and remain etched in my mind forever. It is not just be- cause he was the PM talking to me personally in a friendly manner but because of his responsiveness and his natural behaviour, which creat- ed an impact on me.The maximum time, if I remember correctly, he ever took to respond to me is 23 minutes. Once I sent him a text message and he was in a different timezone, perhapsinGermany, and he took that much time to respond. Even if he is busy at a time, he wouldusuallyreply,saying‘tomor- row’or give another time. His nor- mal turnaround time is not more than 10-15 minutes. Who am I in the party? I may be a known actor, but in the party, I am nothing, just a karyakarta. Why would the PM be concerned about me? But such is Modi sir’s nature. When he has asked me to consult in case of any problem and committed to help me out, he would stand by it, no matter what.That’sthekindofresponsive- nessthatbehovesagreatleader. Not just me, he will never reply to any- one with vague statements like ‘Let’ssee’or‘Letmecheck’.Ikeep away from such people because I know they never ‘see’. It was in June 1992. Narendra Modi ji was also present at the event and he took a lecture session there. At the end he asked the delegates that if they had something to ask or discuss with him, they could do so. At that time I felt like asking a question that had cropped in my mind. I asked him, it is very hot here but why are you wearing two vests? To this Narendra ji said, who told you so? No, I am not wearing two. But I said, yes you are wearing two. Then he asked, how did you come to know? I told him the strap which was visible on the sides of his shoulders showed two of them, one under the other. To this he then explained the reason to me. He said, see I wear a dhoti and ride a bicycle. That is my life. Now often times the end of the dhoti gets tied to the chain of the cycle and gets torn. I try to protect it as best as I can, yet there is always a possibil- ity of an end of my dhoti getting entangled in the chain. Thus, when it is torn, there is no point wearing it anymore. It is then that I fold it, make it double and get a vest stitched with the same. Now this vest has some holes in it but it will serve for sometime more. Then I will not throw it away. I will use it to clean my shoes, he said. I was astonished to hear all this. Sundar Singh Bhandari ji was present there during the conver- sation. He then asked him, but why do you do this dhoti to vest thing? Here Modi ji said, do you know, there are lakhs of people in the coun- try who don’t have a piece of cloth on their body. We should make good use of what soci- ety has given us, instead of unnecessary wast- age. On that day I realised that a person who has such high thoughts for the country and society, will do great for the country once the time comes. nce I suggested to Modi ji that I wanted to publish another book that would be on the manifesto of the BJP for that year’s elections. I had seriously thought that such a book was needed to deliver to the people the manifestos salience in greater detail. But to my surprise, Modi ji outright dismissed the idea as unfruit- ful. He told me, the explanation of the party manifesto won’t have any deep impact on the people. They will gloss over it and put it aside. He rather gave me a to- tally different perspective. He said, if you want to publish something, take up issues that affect people. For instance, publish a book on the water amenities in different ar- eas and then, compare it with the perspectives of different political parties on the same issue and how they are going to solve it or what they have done on it. Tell people how different parties are approaching the same issue. That will really help people understand what actually we are doing for them differently. It struck me as a novelty that would work. I realised instantly that a manifesto is a regular affair that every party brings out. It was Modi ji’s innovative idea of connecting it to issues of the common man and how other parties were doing on them that really worked in the end. nce I got a call from the president of the Umiya Mata temple. He said you hold big government programmes all the time. If possible, also help us organise an upcoming event of Umiya Mata ji in our community. I assured him of looking into the matter and trying my best and sub- sequently brought the matter to the attention of Modi ji. Modi ji imme- diately said, it is a social work for the uplift of the community and society and we must help them. So, I took upon the responsibility and started planning. We decided to or- ganise yagnas and darshans for the five days of the event along with some activities for the uplift of the community like rozgaar mela (em- ployment fair), education seminar, exhibitions etc. We took the plan to CM Modi for a presentation. The temple committee members, trus- tees etc. were present there. I showed him the plan on my laptop. He saw the whole presentation with rapt attention and then said at the end, people in your community are farmers. Kadwa Patidars have land holdings and they do farming on them. People may not listen to me or you but they will certainly listen to the goddess. To address global warming and water scarcity issues, try to have the devotees take a pledge in front of the goddess that if one has 10-acre land, at least on one or two acres he would use drip irrigation technique or deploy sprinklers. You won’t believe, as we took forward the initiative sug- gested by the Chief Minister, no less than 1.5 lakh farmers took the pledge in front of the goddess in those five days of the event and filled out a form to adopt drip irri- gation technology. Modi ji said, within 72 hours. And in 72 hours, not only the land was ready but also all the planning and ancillary require- ments were finalised. Ratan Tata came on Dussehra and signed the papers. In the next Vibrant Gujarat summit, theTata boss said, you are stupid if you are not investing in Gujarat! I Tata’s tryst with Gujarat has much to do with Modi’s Guarantee ok Sabha election was held soon after the Kargil War. Many soldiers and officers of the Army had been martyred in the war. Modi ji asked, in Haryana can’t we give ticket to some martyr’s wife or family member as a tribute to his sacrifice? I scouted for names and finally after 5-6 days zeroed in on Sudha Yadav, who went on to win the election and become an MP. As soon as she was given tick- et by the party, there was a resounding support for her in the area. But Sudha ji neither had any political exposure or experience, nor did she have much re- sources to fight the polls. So, one day Modi ji called a meeting of the kar- yakartas to garner resources for her. He told them that whenever he went home, his mother always put some money into his pocket. Being a pracharak, he didn’t need money and so he always kept them with him to use for some good cause. So, for Sudha ji, he first donated his share of money into the kalash (urn) designated for the purpose. This moti- vated others and donations soon started flowing in. People enthusiastically par- ticipated in the donation programme, and some even pledged lakhs of rupees. You won’t believe, within no time, we had Rs 7 lakh in our kitty. In 1999, Rs 7 lakh was a big amount and this easily helped us undertake the election ex- penses to ensure Sudha ji’s win. Pankaj Soni Jaipur The RajasthanBJP, which lost 11 seats in the LS polls, may consider the division of votes along caste lines as the reason for its defeat on these seats, but the cen- tral leadership of the party doesn’t accept this argument. The reason for this is that voters were observed mobilising in favour of candidates ir- respective of caste in many constituencies. Central leaders attribute defeat on 11 Rajasthan seats to poor election management. Now, with upcoming elections on five assem- bly seats in the State, the BJP is preparing a strat- egy to delegate the man- agement of elections to prominent leaders on each seat. A notable as- pect of these by-elections will be the active partici- pation of several central leaders, including State President CP Joshi, who himself contested in the Lok Sabha elections. Phase 2 will see drains from VKI to Badi-Khe- da and Murlipura via Central Spine, costing Rs 19.21 cr. According to BJP sources, the primary reason for the party’s defeat on 11 seats was poor booth management. The BJP’s organisation was less active in Nagaur, Sikar, Churu, and Jhun- jhunu, failing to mobilise its core voters effectively. Despite favourable caste equations in the Barmer- Jaisalmer seat, inadequate election management led the BJP candidate to third place. SOME WELL DEVELOPED NATIONAL AIRPORTS IN INDIA These examples demonstrate how well-developed airport vicini- ties can significantly enhance the travel experience, boost local economies, and reflect the cultural richness of the region. By drawing inspiration from these successful models, Jaipur Inter- national Airport can transform its surroundings into a vibrant and welcoming gateway to Rajasthan. The area around Jaipur International Airport holds immense potential to enhance the overall travel experience for visitors. By addressing the current shortcomings and implementing strategic improvements, Jaipur can ensure that its airport vicinity truly reflects the grandeur and hospitality of Rajasthan. A collaborative effort involving the government, local businesses, and the community can transform this space into a vibrant and welcoming gateway, capturing the essence of the Pink City and making a lasting impression on all who visit. Jaipur International Airport, the 13th busiest airport in India in daily scheduled flight operations, serves as the primary gateway for both domestic and international travellers to Rajasthan, attracting a significant influx of tourists. The vicinity of Jaipur International Airport, despite its significant development, fails to reflect the rich heritage and culture of Rajasthan. Tourists, arriving with an eagerness to experience the beauty and vibrant traditions of the Pink City, are instead greeted with inappropriate constructions, stray animals, and chaotic surroundings. To truly represent Rajasthan’s rich culture, a master plan is needed. This plan should ensure that the airport’s surroundings, including waiting areas, lounges and building facades, embody the state’s artistic and cultural heritage. Proper traffic control, elimination of stray animals, and a focus on showcasing local art, craft and cuisine are essential. City First delves into the importance of developing the airport surroundings, examines successful examples from other metropolitan cities and proposes practical improvements that can be implemented by both the government and the public. Rajasthan's GRANDEUR? LOW-QUALITY ESTABLISHMENTS: The existing restaurants and tea stalls are often poorly maintained and fail to reflect the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan. TRAFFIC AND SAFETY HAZARDS: Poorly managed parking and congested roads not only detract from the experience but also pose safety risks. VIP SAFETY CONCERN: The recent surge in skyline building constructions near the airport poses significant security risks, especially for VIPs. INADEQUATE SHOPS: Area would benefit from establishments that reflect Rajasthan’s rich heritage, offering crafts, local cuisine, cultural exhibits. This shift would not only improve aesthetic appeal but also enhance overall experience, making airport vicinity a more welcoming family-friendly environment. LACK OF AMENITIES: There is a dearth of quality shops, eateries, and facilities catering to tourists and locals alike. CLUTTER AND UNWANTED ELEMENTS: Car care wash shops and debris near the State Hanger Road create a cluttered and uninviting environment. AREA AROUND JAIPUR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HAS SEVERAL ISSUES THAT NEED ADDRESSING Mitali Dusad [email protected] As a healthcare professional serving Rajasthan, I've witnessed firsthand the importance of a clean and inviting environment around Jaipur Interna- tional Airport. The current state, with clutter and low-quality establishments, not only fails to reflect our rich cultural heritage but also poses health risks. Enhancing this vicinity isn't just about aesthetics; it's about ensuring the well-being of travellers and locals alike. Improving cleanliness and ameni- ties will contribute positively to public health and reinforce Jaipur's reputation as a destination of cultural and medical excellence. —DR RAJDEEP NOGIA The vicinity around Jaipur Interna- tional Airport presents untapped potential. The current lack of qual- ity shops and amenities not only hampers the tourist experience but also limits economic opportunities for local businesses. By developing regulated commercial zones and promoting cultural representation through Rajasthani handicrafts, we can attract more visitors and stimu- late economic growth. This initia- tive not only enhances the airport’s appeal but also supports entrepre- neurial ventures and boosts the local economy. —MANISHA RAMCHANDANI As an educator dedicated to Rajasthan’s cultural legacy, I believe transforming the area around Jaipur International Airport is crucial for fostering a sense of pride and identity among students and residents. The current clutter and lack of amenities diminish the educational value of our surroundings. Introducing aesthetic improvements like murals and green spaces will create an inspiring environment for learning and cultural appreciation. By engaging the commu- nity and instilling a sense of ownership, we can create a welcoming gateway that celebrates Rajasthan’s heritage and enriches educational experiences. —ARCHANA VYAS Rajasthan is known for tourism, whosoever tourist visit india for 7 days gives nearly 2.5 days to state. Jaipur airport is a significant spot in Rajasthan. The govt should put slogans like ‘Padharo Mhare Des’ right outside the airport, culture, deserts should be promoted and posters should be placed outside airport . The govt should think on these lines as tourism will give a major boom to the state. The govt should work and be sensitive towards this as it will be beneficial to everyone. Work should also be done on the small businesses running outside on plots, eater- ies but they should be placed somewhere else first and should be provided with opportunity, not like you snatch the business and they have nothing to eat. It was careless administration due to which they are there, but now they should be careful and rather throwing them away, should be provided a spot somewhere else. —RAJESH KATARA, Congress Spokesperson Jaipur airport is totally a different spot and it holds importance. When we think from the tourist point of view, tourism is Rajasthan’s strong- hold, whenever people visit the city from that point, they should have a feeling that they are in Jaipur or Raj which is famous for its rich herit- age and culture. I think our tourism will also work for its betterment so monuments and heritage should be seen to everyone. We will work upon this for sure. The work will be sped up in this direction which will be visible on sometime as well. Rajasthan bse value is tourism, all our sources are depended on that. Our govt and tourism minister will surely look into this side and work on it. Our govt has been only here since months and we already have an amazing footfall. Not only Jaipur, the development will be visible across the state. —SUMAN SHARMA, BJP Spokesperson former women commission chief SIGNIFICANCE OF AIRPORT VICINITY DEVELOPMENT: The surroundings of an airport are critical for several reasons: n Enhancing Tourist Experience: A well-maintained and welcoming environment makes visitors feel more comfortable and enthusiastic about their trip. n Economic Boost: Attracting tourists to nearby shops, restaurants, and attrac- tions can significantly benefit the local economy. n City Image Improvement: Aesthetic and functional airport surroundings con- tribute positively to the city’s overall image and reputation. n Property Value Increase: Development around airports can lead to higher property values and attract more investment.
