Learning Competencies
The learners will be able to . . .
• draw different shades of an object.
• understand how light and shade match.
• blend tones in charcoal drawing.
2
OVERVIEW
3
Light and shade in your drawing require a slightly
different approach. This time, we are not looking for
edges, but areas of light and dark and in between
tones. Accomplish this artistic side learning by learning
how to use pencil shading.
Pencil Shading
4
Is learning how to control movement
of your pencil. The pencil movements
make the mark on the paper towards
the creation of a shade or effect that
you want. Before you begin , you
would want to decide first if you are
to use the point or side of the pencil
for shading.
Pencil Shading
5
In this example, shading on the left is shaded with the pencil point, while the right was
shaded with the side. As you would notice, the side shading technique offers grainier
and softer look and, of course, would cover a large area quickly. On the other hand, the
pencil point would allow you more control over the pencil. Experiment and see what is
most applicable. You would want to try shading with hard and soft pencils too.
Pencil Shading
6
The usual way people do the shading
is to move the pencil back and fort in
a regular pattern turning at the end of
each movement. The problem here is
that when you shade a large area,
the edges will give you a dark line
relative to the area tone.
Pencil Shading
7
Sometimes, it is only faint, but often it looks obvious and it spoils the
appearance that that you are trying to create with your pencil shading.
The alternative to this technique is to use small and overlapping circles.
Try to work in an irregular, overlapping pattern and gradually build the shading on the page. Try
using a light touch on lighter areas.
Pencil Shading
8
In shading, direction is important. A
rough change of direction will show
the difference on the edge between
the horizontal and vertical shading
directions. The secret is to control the
direction of your shading. This is
called Pencil Toning.
Pencil Shading
9
You can also vary the pressure on the pencil to create light and dark tones. The
precise control can allow you to model smooth forms. This type of technique is
useful for creating highlights across textures like hair or grass.
By following the shading techniques mentioned, try combining perpective
drawing and shading.
ACTIVITY
10
You need:
☺ Your preferred pencil for shading.
☺ Eraser.
☺ Book or short bond paper.
ACTIVITY
11
INSTRUCTION:
Combine the perspective and shading techniques by copying the
drawing below the space provided given in your book.
SHADING AND TONAL VALUES
12
Shading and tones, when mixed, make for a realistic drawing.
are tips in doing shading and toning techniques:
1. AVOID USING OUTLINES
in creating a value drawing, prevent yourself
from drawing a line and just focus on areas of value.
You may use the lightest of lines to get down the basic
shapes, and from there, build up the shading. Often, the
outline will be at the joint between two different values
and is created by the contrast between the light and
dark areas

are tips in doing shading and toning techniques:
2. Use background to define foreground objects.
the shadows and background will provided
the contrast. Focus in drawing them to define your
foreground objects. Remember that it is acceptable
to let an edge fade into the background, but do not
outline.
SHADING AND TONAL VALUES

are tips in doing shading and toning techniques:
3. Use the proper tools for the job.
There are different types of
pencils that you can use The smaller the
number of the pencil, the lighter shade
that you can make. For very dark areas, a
4 or 6B should be used.
SHADING AND TONAL VALUES

are tips in doing shading and toning techniques:
4. USE THE PENCIL ACCURATELY
When applying tone, do it with
small rapid circular or sideways
movement of the hand. Always keep
your pencil sharp. Randomly vary your
start and end point. An eraser can be
used to lift off highlights. For beginners,
try to avoid smudging or blending. Learn
how to get the most out of the pencil
mark.
ACTIVITY
16
You need:
☺ Sketch Paper or Oslo Paper
☺ Pencils (2H, HB, 2B and 4B)
☺ Eraser
☺ Glue
☺ Tortillon
PERFORMANCE TASK
17
INSTRUCTION:
1. Choose a high resolution digital picture of you.
2. Go to www. Lunapic.com/editor. At the top menu, choose effects
and then choose pencil sketch.
3. Upload your picture, convert it into pencil, and then print it.
4. Cut the picture either vertically or horizontally.
5. Glue the original half part of the picture onto the sketch paper.
Make sure that there is still room for the removed section to be drawn.
6. Using the other half of the picture as reference. Complete the
picture by using shading. Continue the ones off from the existing edge
of the picture.
TERMINOLOGIES

PENCIL SHADING
is learning how to control the movement of your pencil.
PENCIL TONING
is to control the direction of your shading.
TORTILLON
also called smudge sticks, are rolled tubes of paper that are used to
smudge drawing.
WRAPPING UP
19
Now you have learned how to use your pencil properly to create a
realistic drawing. Shading is not just merely moving your pencil to
create an effect. By using the proper stroke and direction, you can
create the perfect highlight needed for the drawing. Shading and
toning enhances a perspective drawing significantly
WRITTEN WORK
20
Answer the following in sentence precisely and concisely.
1. What type of pencil shading technique did you use to create the perspective box
drawing in your activities? Why?
2. How effective is a tortillon in shading and toning a drawing?
3. How important is using different types of pencil in drawing the newspaper shading
exercise in the hands-on exercise.
