Surrealism
Started in 1924, Surrealism was both
an art and literary movement that
stressed the significance of letting
one’s imagination rule through the
use of the sub-conscious without
the hindrances of logic and normal
standards. Stemming from the
earlier Dadaist (Dada) movement
which was popular during World
War I, Surrealism involved a more
playful and spontaneous in
spirit. Ways of thinking about how a
viewer perceives the world around
himself helped to shape the
movement.
The Surrealist movement was
helped along in its development
during the 1920s and 1930s with
the famous artist Salvador
Dali. He, along with the other
movement’s artists, stressed
using the subconscious part of
the brain to provide the content
for the imagery. The artists used a
realistic style to paint their
irrational images.
FYI:
The word surrealist was coined by
Apollinaire and first appeared in
the preface in a his play which
was written in 1903 and first
performed in 1917.
Techniques such as automatism (free
association) assisted the artists to put
their theories into play in order to get
their sub-conscious to become reality in
their paintings and literary
works. Artists who used automatism to
help create their work were called
Absolute Surrealists. Artists who
focused on making connections
amongst material and abstract forms
were called Veristic Surrealists. Their
aim was to manipulate objects from
reality into their paintings, as opposed
to the Absolute Surrealists who tried to
create imagery from their own minds.
From the 1920s onward, the movement
spread around the globe, eventually
affecting the visual arts, literature, film,
and music of many countries and
languages, as well as political thought
and practice, philosophy, and social
theory.

Salvador Dali
Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i
Domènech,
1st Marqués de Dalí de Pubol
Salvador Dali was born on May 11,
1904 close to the French border
in Catalonia, Spain. He also had a
brother, named Salvador, who
had died in 9 months earlier at
the age of 3 and a younger sister
named Ana Maria. His Mother
encouraged her son's artistic
endeavors, and in 1916 he began
attending classes taught by Juan
Núñez at the Municipal Drawing
School in Figueres. At age 16, he
left for Madrid to study at the
Fine Arts School, with hopes to
qualify as a teacher.
Salvador began exhibiting his works
in 1922. Some trends in his work
which would continue throughout
his life were already evident in
the 1920s. Dalí devoured
influences from many styles of
art, ranging from the most
academically classic, to the most
cutting-edge avant garde. He
officially joined the Surrealist
Movement group of Paris in 1929
and painted the majority of his
many works in that style. He died
on January 23, 1989 and has been
cited as major inspiration for
many modern artists.
Famous Works:
Persistence of
Memory -
1931
Morphological Echo –
1934-1936
Swans Reflecting Elephants -1937
