1. Regulation is a nervous system "job." The nervous system has millions of years of biological evolution to support physiological and emotional regulation. 
​
Don't take responsibility for regulating emotions because it will lead to exhaustion, frustration, and confusion. It is better to consider what support the nervous system needs to stabilize or grow its bandwidth for emotional regulation. 
​
The nervous system "decides" its response based on intensity, familiarity, and safety. Whether the intensity comes from emotion, thoughts, physical pain, conflict, or a memory doesn't matter to the nervous system. The intensity/pressure of the experience decides the response.
​

Understanding how your nervous system responds to trauma is essential for healing and self-awareness. According to polyvagal theory, our nervous system has three pathways designed to protect us: the Ventral Vagal, Sympathetic State, and Dorsal Vagal. The Ventral Vagal is our optimal state, allowing us to connect, co-regulate, and feel calm and safe. However, complex trauma can trigger the Sympathetic State, activating fight-or-flight responses, leading to feelings of fear, panic, and rage. Alternatively, the Dorsal Vagal pathway leads to a shutdown response, causing numbness, depression, and feelings of isolation.
