What is all the hype about tallow? Come and watch the process of making deer tallow. Deer fat contains healthy fats that can be used for cooking, skin care products, soaps, candles and starting fires. It's also a sustainable choice, honoring the animal by utilizing the fat that would otherwise be discarded. Beef tallow can be made using the same process.
A tallow making class will be offered on 11/20/2025. Pre-registration for the class is required.

Join us to learn the basics of safely loading and shooting a modern in-line muzzle loading rifle. We will discuss all aspects of loading, shooting, and cleaning. If you plan to use your own, bring a minimum of 50 rounds of new ammunition for your firearm. Make sure all firearms are unloaded before arriving at the range. There should be no live ammunition, or uncased firearms inside the classroom. Please leave all firearms in the vehicle until the class is dismissed including all concealed carry handguns and magazines.

This course is hosted by Pioneer Gun Club. The Location will be at the McBride (outdoor) Range within the Shotgun Club House.
For this skill session, NO FIREARMS or Live AMMO is Allowed. Please Leave them secured in your vehicle or at home.
Students must be 11 years old by the day of the class. Enroll the student and not the parent for the session. Students need to complete the knowledge session of the course, prior to attending this skills session, by doing the on-line portion or filling out the student manual chapter review questions. More information is available online on the MDC hunter ed. page. Student manuals are available at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center, Kansas City Regional Office, or from the MDC website.

Explore how to safely handle and shoot a pellet rifle. This is a hands-on program with one-on-one instruction. All equipment, including safety equipment, will be provided. We will meet at the Runge outdoor pavilion before heading to the Runge outdoor range. Dress for the weather in closed-toe shoes. Participants should be prepared to stand or bring a camp chair.
