Virginia SOL 5th Grade Math Review Tip Sheet

This tip sheet is a review of the curriculum for math standards required for 5th grade in the state of Virginia. 6th grade teachers could also use it at the beginning of the school year as a reminder of the skills taught in 5th grade. I created this a few years ago and use it at the end of the year as a review.

A rap that teaches students the parts of a fraction, how to convert a fraction into a decimal and vice versa, and then also how to add or subtract fractions. Your students will love learning these topics through the use of song lyrics. With using the connection of rhyming to get across the mathematical concepts, students are able to maintain and retain them much better.

This product goes with the HMH Go Math book for sixth grade; however could be used for 5th and 7th grades as well since it is completely editable, except for the notes portion. It includes dividing decimals by whole numbers, dividing decimals by decimals, and multiplying decimals. I made a copy for my students that had sections whited out for them to fill in. Enjoy!

Here’s a step-by-step guide: Ignore the Decimal Point Initially: Treat the decimal number as if it were a whole number. For instance, if you are multiplying 3.5 by 4, you first consider 35 (ignoring the decimal) and then multiply.Multiply as Usual: Perform the multiplication as you would with whole numbers. For example, multiply 35 by 4
