Colorado painter Vance Kirkland created abstract expressionist works through inventive resist techniques using mixtures of oil paint and water. Kirkland's most identifiable works from 1953-1964 involved pouring and spooning mixtures of oil paint and water onto canvases to create distinctive bubbling, swirling patterns. To reach larger canvases, Kirkland would hover above the paintings suspended from the ceiling by straps. The exhibition highlights Kirkland's oil and water paintings and his transition to dot paintings through series like the Valhalla paintings from 1964-1966.
