The document discusses the knowledge gap hypothesis, which emerged in 1970 and was formed by three researchers from the University of Minnesota - Philip J Tichenor, George A. Donohue, and Clarice N Olien. They defined the knowledge gap theory as when mass media information is introduced into a social system, higher socioeconomic status segments acquire this information faster than lower socioeconomic status segments. The researchers presented five reasons for justifying the knowledge gap: communication skills, stored information, relevant social contact, selective exposure, and media target markets.
