A quadratic function is defined as f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c, where a cannot equal 0. The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola, which is a curved U-shape. Parabolas can open upward or downward depending on whether a is positive or negative. The vertex is the point where the parabola intersects its axis of symmetry, which is the vertical line that divides the parabola into two congruent halves. The x-coordinate of the vertex is given by the formula h = -b/2a.
