Arch Vault Dome
*Arch Definition
*A curved structure member that is used to span
an opening and to support loads from above.
* The arch is basic element for the make of the
vault and domes.
*Is an essential element of the architecture of
early civilizations.

Technical parts:
structural behaviour
• Forces acting in arches and
vault are characterized by a
thrust.
• Intensity of horizontal thrust
is generated by the weight of
the voussoir.
• Action of different voussoir
on below ones create a line
of thrust.
• Line of thrust determine the
stability of arch and vault.

Classification of Vault
Main Construction system
As like arch the
centering is
a main construction
method
for vault
• A corbel arch- is an arch like
construction method that
uses the architectural
technique of corbelling to
span a space or a void in a
structure such as an
entranceway in a wall or as
the span of a bridge.
Corbelled
RADIATING:An arch in
which each voussoir
is carved with motifs placed
along the radius
of the arch. (as opposed to
a tangential arch).
RADIATING
ARCH
A dome is a hollow semi-
spherical structural
element
Domes evolved from
arches, by rotation arch
360 degree
DOME
Types of Domes
1- According to Geometry
Semi circular dome HEMISPHERICAL DOME
Onion dome:- Is a dome
tapering smoothly to a
point
1- According to
Geometry
Saucer dome :- it’s a low
pitched shallow dome
2- According to Building technique
Corbel dome Geodesic dome Monolithic dome
Umbrella dome dome on pendentives Squinch dome
• Domes are also
characterized by a thrust.
• When a dome is generated
by interaction of two vault
similar forces are applied
on it.
• And additional circular
force act on it due to
construction of dome in a
circular manner around a
vertical axis.
• This is the force which
help in balancing the
dome.
Load transfer
in dome
A pendentive is constructive
device which allows the
placement of the circular
dome over the square room or
elliptical over the rectangular
room.
pendentives
A squinch in architecture is a
construction filling in the upper angles of a
square room so as to form a base to
receive a dome.

CASE STUDY ON
*Case Study : Bara
Imambara*The Bara Imambara is a famous
monument of Lucknow with
historical, cultural and heritage
importance
*Bara Imambara was built in 1784
by the Nawab of Awadh, Asaf -
ud-Daula. It is for this reason that
it is of known as Asafia imambara.
*It is said that the bara Imambara is
the world's largest arched room
without any pillars and the
Nawabs used to hold their public
hearings here.
*Have a circular garden in center
enclosed by arcaded cloisters.
*CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
*The whole building is made of
Lakhanui bricks (small size brick
*No wood or metal has been used
in the construction. This special
contemporary style of construction
makes the structure unique and
amazings) and lime plaster.
*The main hall of the Imambara is
162 ft(49.3776m) in length and 53
ft. 6 in.(16.33m) wide.
*The arched roof of this vaulted hall
has, no beams or intervening
supports appear to hold the 16 ft.
thick slab which is estimated to be
2,00,000 tons in weight.
The Kharbooja Hall
*CONSTRUCTION DETAIL
*The ceiling of the hall is 50 ft(15.2m). high
above the floor.
*It is a four-storey building where each
floor is very much different from the
other one.
* Designed by architect Kifayt Ullah
*The amazing hollow walls of the central
hall not only keeps it cool during summer
but also help to lighten the load of the
structure.
*Magnificent labyrinth with 489 identical
doorways and more than 1000 passages.

*Domes in this span range cover about a hectare, or
roughly the area of one football field.
*Covering areas of this size without columns was an
impossible task until the advent of metal structures in
the late 19th century.
*Following are some examples:
Marchwood Silverdome:The Veolia Marchwood
silver dome is masterful in its architecture with twin
chimneys
Stretching upward through the elegantly curved
roof.
Designed by renowned French architect Jeanrobert
Mazaud, became a reality in 2007. its spans 110m
*
*Mexico City Velodrome: a long span sports
and performance venue, is the 80 x 120m
Belem Guerrero Velodrome in Mexico City.
*its span is 115m it serves as a training and
practice facility for cyclists.
* also transforms into an arena of music and
interesting lighting for live performances and
the production of music videos
