How to save STRAWFLOWER seeds 🌸 Strawflower seeds may be one of the easiest seeds to save as the flowers tell you when the seeds are ready. Flowers will be tufted and fluffy. Remove the fluff and away and you’ll notice all of the tiny seeds inside. The beauty of it is that letting only one plant go to seed can reward you with thousands of seeds! Strawflowers will cross-pollinate so you’ll want to be sure to isolate them from one another if you want to keep them true. Are you saving stra...

7 Flowers You'll Want to Save Seeds From This Year - Step-by-Step Guide - Catching Spring
Did you plant your favorite flowers in your garden this year? Great news, you can save or harvest those flower seeds to plant next season. Saving flower seeds is so easy to do. In this video learn how to seed-save zinnia flowers to plant next season.

Did you know you can save or harvest flower seeds to plant next season?

First off, if your flowers are HYBRIDS, saving their seeds will NOT produce the same flower when you grow them out. This is because hybrid seeds are typically 'F1', or the first generation of the cross of their parent plants. They're not genetically stable enough to produce the same characteristics the next go around.

If you save seeds of open-pollinated or heirloom flower varieties, you'll get the same characteristics when you grow them out, provided they haven't been

Poppies are one of the first flowers to bloom in the Spring in our Flower Farm. 💐 They’re now done for the season and ready to harvest.

Watch for pods to turn from green to brown. They will form a hard shell and rattle when shaken. Each one of these pods holds hundreds of tiny seeds!

1. Pry pods open over a sheet of white paper (this helps with visibility and easier clean up)

2. Remove large shell pieces, gather seeds up in the paper, and pour them into a container

3. Seal and store in a cool, dry place

4. Plant a few weeks before the last frost for Springtime blooms!

How to Self-Pollinate Zinnias for Seed Saving

This video isn’t the most polished (I’ll film a clearer one this summer!), but here’s how I self-pollinate zinnias to preserve specific traits for seed saving.

Start by capping your bloom with an organza bag—make sure it’s roomy enough for the flower to fully open. This prevents cross-pollination by keeping out pollinators.

Once all the yellow florets (the tiny pollen-producing flowers at the center) have fully opened, you’re ready.

Use a smal...

Saving Marigold Seeds. Last fall I collected marigold flower heads to dry out and save for seeds . It’s one of the easiest seeds to save and plant. Collect your marigold flower heads and dead seed heads. Make sure they dry completely, I let mine sit in the basket for a month then separated the seeds from the dried shell. Store your seeds in a dry airtight container until ready to plant. Saving seeds is one of the easiest ways to become more self sufficient and it’s one less item to buy. ...
