One of the most famous Swedish Vikings in history is Erik the Red
k the Red was famed Viking colonizer, explorer, and chief. Born to a family of modest means, Erik was exiled for his involvement in a violent dispute He rose in status as he explored Greenland and founded the first Norse settlement there. Headstrong and quick to lose his temper, he set his mind to improving his fortune and influence. He used his failure in the Icelandic court of law as an opportunity to gain fame and authority by settling and developing a vast land unknown to Europeans, a land that still carries the name he gave it.  His son Leif continued his legacy of exploration by leading some of the first Norse voyages to North America, including Baffin Island, Labrador, Newfoundland and the Maritimes. The Fall Of Norse Greenland: What Happened To The Settlers
126K views · 2K reactions | Erik the Red was among the most daring and controversial figures of the Viking Age. Born in Norway around 950 AD, he earned his nickname not only for his flaming red hair and beard but also for his fiery temperament. After his father was exiled for manslaughter, Erik’s family settled in Iceland. Yet Erik soon repeated history, killing several men in disputes and earning exile himself.

Rather than submit to fate, Erik sailed west into the unknown. Around 982 AD, he reached a vast icy landmass we now call Greenland. To entice settlers, he named it optimistically—“Greenland”—despite its forbidding glaciers. His marketing worked: hundreds joined him, founding Europe’s first permanent colony in North America’s shadow.
