Please provide feedback about Section Translation. We want to hear about your experience expanding articles by translating new section on your mobile device. You can try the tool at the test instance (you need to create a test account there). It is still in an early development but we want to share it early to hear your impressions.

For feedback on the existing Content translation tool, please check the corresponding discussion page.

Section Translation

Hello!
It is impossible to try the Section Translation at the test server, because it just shows the interface, and functions are not available. Svetprobirsk (talk) 09:03, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Section translation is in development. But if you are curious to see the current state, please visit https://sx.wmflabs.org/index.php/Main_Page , create account, login, click on the links given main page of that wiki. Santhosh.thottingal (talk) 07:01, 13 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Section Translation: I have a question

[edit]

I have a question: When I make a section translation with the test server, the translations is published or not?

Thanks. Rodney Araujo (talk) 17:19, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the test environment will load content from real wikis, but editing and publishing only happens in the test server. So, nothing is published in the real wiki. This means that for now you should copy/save your work if you want to manually add it and publish it to the real wiki article later. Eventually this added step won't be necessary. Hope this helps answer your question. EAsikingarmager (WMF) (talk) 14:58, 2 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. And the test of Section Translation works well. Rodney Araujo (talk) 15:36, 2 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
But the MT that only works is Apertium. I need that the Section translation adds support for Google, Yandex and other MT services. Rodney Araujo (talk) 15:38, 2 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking the time to try Section Translation, Rodney. Once it's no longer in the test server, all the usual MT services currently available with Content Translation should be available. EAsikingarmager (WMF) (talk) 17:08, 2 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@EAsikingarmager (WMF): When the section translation will be avaliable on Wikipedia? Rodney Araujo (talk) 17:19, 2 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi Rodney, thanks for the question, I hope this answer will be useful for you, as well as others who may have a similar question.
Section Translation is still actively in development, but once we evaluate it's usefulness and safety, and collect feedback from communities, the plan is to release it on Wikipedia. Initially it will be released for one language and we'll evaluate how it works for editors when translating real content. Based on those results and community input, we'll hopefully discover good opportunities to make it available to more languages and wikis. We'll continue to post relevant updates here as development progresses. EAsikingarmager (WMF) (talk) 16:59, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

About the message that is shown in the article to invite to the user to translate other section

[edit]

I view that in the section translation test server, after publish a translation of a section, the message that invites to the user to translate other section and the highlighted section is not shown. Can you resolve the issue? Thanks. Rodney Araujo (talk) 20:01, 12 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Nothing translated

[edit]

Hi, I tried to translate from en to bn on test server. It shows original english text in proposed translation from Google/Yanadex. Yahya (talk) 09:56, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Yahya,
I have created a bug report for this issue. We will resolve it as soon as possible and I will notify you once this is sorted out so you can still give us your valuable feedback on the Section Translation tool.
Thank you so much. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 22:35, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hello Yahya,
Please note that the cloud test instances cannot have Google/Yandex Machine Translation as it requires private API keys, which can not store in instances safely. Machine translation will become active once the tool is deployed. Thank you. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 08:02, 1 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
And is it possible to add Bing translator? Yahya (talk) 05:51, 1 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Yahya it will not be possible for us to use any of the commercial services, including Bing on the test instances due to security reasons. However, we have started some conversations with our colleagues with the partnership teams for eventual inclusion of Bing on the translation platforms in the main wikis. This is a follow up from our earlier conversations . Unfortunately, these processes take a bit of time (many months) so it is a slow process and includes both legal, and technical coordination. Your inputs on the earlier thread were very helpful for us in terms of understanding the translation quality comparisons. At this point, we don't have a clear timeline for this, but hopefully soon. Hope this was helpful. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 10:17, 2 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

প্রাথমিক প্রতিক্রিয়া

[edit]
(User:Runab WMF,
Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 10:38, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Translation of the feedback from @আফতাবুজ্জামান . @Pginer-WMF please do check.
  • MT is not working
  • I could not find a way to search an article
  • The suggestions I am being shown are mostly with missing ’see also’, ‘reference’ and ‘external link’. Most enwiki articles have {{reflist}} or <reference/> so there is nothing to translate in this section really. For the ’See also’ section, since the other articles do not exist in bnwiki, they are showing as redlinks. So, instead of showing articles with missing ‘reference’, ‘external links’ and ’see also’ sections, please prioritize articles with real content sections missing.
  • When a section is being published it is getting added to the very end of the article, like this. The section should not be added at the very end at all times, else it would require additional editing time to correct this. Section translation should instead deal with this more intelligently. For instance:
    • If the added section is an ‘external link’ then its ok to be added at the end
    • If the added section is a ’see also’ then it should be added before ‘external links’ and ‘reference’ section, assuming those two sections exist for that article
    • If the added section is something else, then it should be added before ‘external links’, ‘reference’ and ‘see also’ section, assuming those two sections exist for that article. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 10:49, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @আফতাবুজ্জামান for the feedback and your interest in the tool. This is an early version of the tool with many areas to improve, and your input is very useful to help. us understand which are the most needed ones. I'll add below some more details on the different issues mentioned:
MT is not working
We are in the middle of the deployment process and this is a blocker. The team is actively working on fixing the issue. This will be resolved before broader announcements of the tool are made since it is a key part of it.
I could not find a way to search an article
The very first version of the tool is only providing suggestions. As part of the next iterations we plan to support the ability to search for an article to translate. There are more detail in this ticket (soon to be updated with more design details).
Meanwhile it is possible to access any article by adjusting the URL (example to translate sections from the Moon article). It is not very convenient, but some advanced users may find it useful until a proper UI is created.
The suggestions I am being shown are mostly with missing ’see also’, ‘reference’ and ‘external link’.
Suggestions are based on previously translated articles with Content Translation. It makes sense to filter them further to make sure more relevant ones are surfaced. I added your comment to the related ticket to make sure it is visible when the team works on this.
When a section is being published it is getting added to the very end of the article
With this we were not sure to which degree to automate this and where interested in observing real use. What you mention makes perfect sense. I added your comment to this ticket which captures our initial ideas around this.
Thanks a lot for the early feedback! Pginer-WMF (talk) 11:54, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

bnwiki mobile users cannot see in-progress and published items in the modified dashboard

[edit]

Changes made to hide in-progress and published content from the mobile dashboard via phab:T270691 has led to confusion among bnwiki mobile users who used that functionality frequently. Is there any solution we can offer to avoid this, as the unified dashboard is still some time away? Originally reported on my talk page by @আফতাবুজ্জামান and @SHEIKH Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 14:14, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

(excuse my english)
Hi CX team, we know dashboard isn't optimized for mobile and if you start a new translation using it, it will redirect you to desktop mode to translate. But some editor still wants that because after T270691, there is no button to start a whole new translation on mobile. Right now some editor uses tricks like 1. remove m. from url or 2. force browser to show desktop version of CX so they can have dashboard back or 3. got to enwiki's CX, click "+ New Translation", change the language to en, start a new translation and then tool will redirect you to bnwiki to translate.
It would be nice if we can have both options. so, if someone wants section translation, they can use that or if someone want to start a whole new translation, they can do that too. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 17:07, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Many mobile users of Bengali Wikipedia use content translation. I think it is best to separate the two. Ex... bn:Special:contenttranslation Redirect to Content translation and bn:Special:sectiontranslation Redirect to Section translation, thanks MdsShakil (talk) 05:59, 23 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for all the feedback, and thanks for using the translation tool.
We plan to support the translation of new articles on mobile soon. This work will be a continuation of the work we already did to search for a specific article to translate. In this way, users on mobile would be able to do both (a) translating new articles and (b) expanding existing ones. In both cases, using the mobile-specific editor of section translation.
The long term plan is to have just one unified dashboard that could lead to a desktop or mobile editor depending on the user device. For that to happen we'll be improving the Section Translation dashboard to incorporate the missing features.
Section translation was launched early to learn from the community at an early stage and improve the tool based on that. At the beginning of the project, Content Translation was not directly usable from a mobile device (requiring some of the workarounds described above to access the desktop version on a mobile device). Currently, we are providing some partial support directly on mobile that will be getting better over time.
I understand that some of the intermediate steps can bring some confusion, but I think that having an integrated experience will be preferred in the long term rather than separating the two versions of the dashboard further (which has maintenance costs and potential for confusion too). Hello Balyozxane,
I appreciate your interest in the Section translation tool. It is possible to request access to this tool; however, we can only enable the tool in Wikis that Content Translation is out of beta. The above means that to enable Section Translation in your Wiki, we have to deploy both Content translation and Section translation in Kurdish Wikipedia.
We can start enabling the tools by notifying your community of our plans to deploy them based on your request. After one week, If we don't get any opposition, we will enable the Content and Section Translation in Kurdish Wikipedia.
Thanks for this inquiry and please let us know if you have other questions or feedback about the tool. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 22:00, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Support from the Central Bikol Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi, I am an administrator in Central Bikol Wikipedia and we always support developments like this as this would not only benefit the whole community but the whole wiki community as well. The Content translation tool was being utilized by us too many times especially during edit-a-thons and participation on international campaigns. We hope that in the near future, the accuracy of it would be almost similar to the Tagalog Content Translation Tool. In the past, we were also able to forward a .txt file of Central Bikol to English translation of the Bible which I guess would be feed on the Opus MT. We are excited for the Section Translation tool. :) Kunokuno (talk) 14:44, 15 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

References, tables, templates (infoboxes)

[edit]

Hello, i sometimes use the Content translation tool (for translations to Czech language) and it's really useful, but there are few issues, that do not work properly. One of them are references – i look like the references are taken from the original article, but it does not work. The reason are probably different citation templates at each language mutation of Wikipedia. Could this be solved somehow? For example – the reference could be taken as plain text (what is actually seen on the page). There's also the same problem with tables and templates, mainly infoboxes. Thank you --Martin Vrut (talk) 09:10, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Martin Vrut,
Thank you for your feedback; we understand references, infoboxes, and tables don't work correctly in some Wikis due to template adaptation issues. We hope that we will be able to work towards improving the support for templates and tables in the future.

Unable to choose default translator with SectionTranslation

[edit]

When translating with ContentTranslation on Desktop I'm able to choose my default translator (in Basque Elia is way better). This must be done in every device, as it is not based on the user preferences but, somehow, is stored in the computer (cookies?).

I have started testing SectionTranslation, but Elia must be chosen every time I want to translate something. It should be stored also this preference. (A workaround may be adding Elia as the prefered translator by default for all Basque translations). Theklan (talk) 06:15, 2 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Theklan,
Thank you for this feedback on storing a user's preferred Machine Translation (MT) in Section Translation. We will create a ticket for this and work on it.
About Elia MT being better than other MT in Basque, please can you provide details of language pairs you have noticed that Elia is better?

References

[edit]

Hello. When I tried to begin the translation for Turkmenistan, (in el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Τουρκμενιστάν), although the system worked well and the translation for the etymology was quickly released, references are not added properly and this must be done manually by the user after the addition. Could any technician, working on the betterment of the section translation, repair it in order that translations get added on the page together with their references?

e NikosLikomitros (talk) 10:10, 14 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

+1 support to you, @NikosLikomitros, and I sometimes see system message that, (in my case en-ja language pair) that the citation templates do not match between the language pair.
FYI, for accountability standard on jawp, I often find CX2 hickup with access-date parameter, or enwp not necessarily reject/mark as error any web citations which does not indicate the access-date param, or the date when the poster "saw/read" the source. On the contrary, jawp requites you always provide the access-date when you saw/read the evidence (website).
The workflow after I output/pubilsh from CX2 to User:Omotecho/sandbox/[translation output]:
  1. I need to open two tabs on FireFox to manually compare which ref tag (citation) is missing from [translated output/jar] which [translatio original/en] holds:
:* :con: that is quite time consuming, with possible solution as the system outputs the original citation sandwiched with nowiki tags to the ja text, so that I could mend/request botwork and fill/supplement the lacking parameter:
:* :pro: as far as the [translation original/en] lacks access-date, for example, I would go to web archive site(s) and try find archived website(s). Not necessarily only in English language, I will be lucky to find any reference, maybe mention of the English website citation that the [translation original/en] CX2 omitted from [translated tex/ja].
Forgive me if my input is beyond what you have suggested at the first place. Cheers, Omotecho (talk) 11:06, 14 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Some thoughts

[edit]

Is it possible to make a version that works more like the content translation tool that already exists, i.e. be able to edit all the paragraph and not just sentence by sentence. I find the edit sentence by sentence, that in order to be edited a sentence it has to be done not right below the text but in a different tab, to be much slower than the existing tool (and also it is a quite different interface in the way the existing tool works). I read that some users may be intimated by large paragraphs and they may find it easier to have the text broken down, but I think that there is room for another tool that is pretty much indetical to the content translation but it you can choose to translate just a section and not all the text. English to Bengali translation problem

Unable to re-edit lead section

[edit]

I have translated the lead section using the tool and published it. When I try to re-edit the lead section in Expand with new sections, there was no lead section listed in the Sections present in Bahasa Melayu. It's not even listed in the Sections missing in Bahasa Melayu. Hopefully lead sections will be listed in either of these lists. Tofeiku (talk) 12:36, 1 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Could not detect templates in the target language

[edit]

I try to click the for template in this feature and it said "Equivalent template not available for Bahasa Melayu" despite the template exists as "Bagi" and Template:For is also redirected to Template:Bagi in Bahasa Melayu. Tofeiku (talk) 13:59, 1 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest to allow unexisting templates to be added into just like how unexisting articles are allowed to be added in links. Tofeiku (talk) 04:30, 2 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi, have you tried starting to type in <code><nowiki>{{</nowiki></code>, then template name? Pardon me I have not tried out since this feature is not offered on jawp... Omotecho (talk) 06:53, 2 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
That could work I guess but that would be inconvenient. In the normal Content Translation, you can just copy paste I believe. It would be best to allow templates codes to be copied despite claiming it does not exist. Tofeiku (talk) 11:27, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
It is a peculiar case with jawp I guess, but I believe the above way is the only way to yield CX2's warning and "sabotage" to put through citations. or in my case, en -> ja.
Often times with en-ja translation, CX2 warns me that "since template composition mismatches with the source language, CX2 drops citation and other templates." OK, when I copy the ref tags and its contents from the left window to the right, still the lacking parameters will trigger error message.
CX2 records that my translation has problem with dropping ref tags, which in turn when I publish the translation on jawp, somebody will declare it as un-cited article or not enough citation. Omotecho (talk) 13:21, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

There is another problem. When you publish a section, SectionTranslation adds that section title twice, e.g. [1] (notice == মুখ্যমন্ত্রীদের তালিকা == added twice). আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 16:07, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please do not deploy to la:wiki

In response to UOzurumba's message at [[:la:Vicipaedia:Taberna]], we have reached consensus that the Latin Vicipaedia will impose the following rule, similar to the rule on English Wikipedia. Content translation is to be disabled for anonymous IPs and for users who have not already made 20 non-minor edits to Vicipaedia. Please don't deploy Content Translation or Section Translation to the Latin Vicipaedia until this restriction is in effect. Wikicode editing

[edit]

Hello! I tried translating an article into Udmurt, and I think the tool is excellent.

I'd like to see an option to edit bare wikicode text. Perhaps, that'd be a minor feature, but for languages as Udmurt that have quite poor automatic translation quality and require major editing, working with object like links or templates would be sometimes faster through wikicode.

Thank you for your work! Kotwys (talk) 09:14, 4 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Do you seriously expect us to create documentation for the hypothetical user of Fy:? Of the something like 100 million Wikipedians, only some 10 are active on Fy:. Of this number 139 ever in all that time used your toy to create an article. Do you think that's 139 of the 10, or 139 of the 99 million and change? Can you get rid of that, please? Aliter (talk) 21:42, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Pardon my curiosity, what is "Fy:"? Ата (talk) 13:40, 23 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Fy: is the code for a Wikimedia project. Most likely, it would be for fy.wikipedia.org.
That specific project has about 10 active participant. Those, we, found the translation project interesting, but not something we'd adopt without knowing more. Since our only contact was someone who had trouble even communicating in English, never mind in our wiki's own language, the translation project was forced upon us, and as far as I know, each of us is trying to get it hidden as well as possible, so it won't bother us. Endless fight against poorly-machine-translated Scottish Gaelic

[edit]

Making content translation easier to use for Scottish Gaelic is a really bad idea. The results are often nonsense, and the recent improvements in fluency mean that they are still nonsense but harder to spot at a glance. This will:

  • make the job of admins harder by increasing the supply of nonsensical translations
  • potentially add to the Google Translate doom loop where it produces rubbish which goes on an apparently-trustworthy site like gd.wikipedia.org and is then used to further train the tool in producing more rubbish.

People are rightly concerned about the ethical issues of ChatGPT producing hallucinatory nonsense. We've had this trouble with machine translation for Gaelic for years.

It does nothing but harm.

Please stop. CreagNamBathais (talk) 07:57, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, CreagNamBathais, for your feedback; I want to clarify that machine translation support like google translate is provided to aid translators. It can only be published after translators have reviewed and modified the automatic translation provided.
Suppose the contents translated are below the standard in your wiki. In that case, we can explore increasing the threshold of the machine translation limit (making the machine translation limit more strict) to encourage translators to review their translations more before they can publish them. If the above is something your community would like to explore, please let us know.
If it is something you want, you can start by evaluating samples of initial machine translations and the percentage of reviews done to improve the translations. Based on that, you can tell us how strict we should make it in your wiki (for example: make the Machine Translation 15% strict, allowing only the publication of translations containing 85% of the initial Machine translation). We can adjust the percentage threshold to what works for your wiki, which will also reduce the admins' workload.
Finally, translation is an excellent way to make content available in other wikis (bridging the content gap). If some people misuse it in your Wikipedia, it does not mean everything about it is nonsensical. Likewise, people are writing poor articles from scratch; however, it does not make writing articles from scratch foolish or unacceptable. Therefore, it is unfair to restrict well-meaning users from discovering the Content translation tool and having the Section translation because of the few people misusing it.
Once again, thank you for your feedback, and I look forward to your reply on the way forward. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 00:46, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Messages in mobile translation

[edit]

Hello, I have been enjoying testing the section translation tool and found it quite useful to expand articles from longer versions in other languages. I have some questions about the messages being shown to the translator, though. Firstly, every time I start a new section, I am given two screens of greetings/advice. I don't think this is necessary. If possible, further development of the tool should remove them for returning users, or at least reduce it to only one screen to click through.

The other is a message that shows up as I have finished translating a section. It tells me that it's learning from my changes. Is this strictly true? I know that some of the language pairs I work with uses Apertium to translate, which is a bit of a pain to update and improve. I feel it would be better if the saving comment was completely honest. If it really is learning from my edits, then fine.

Anyway, thanks to everyone involved in developing this tool, overall it's working well. Ranveig (talk) 11:42, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Ranveig, for your suggestion, it is noted. Yes, the translation service learns from the changes you make to the initial translations. When I try to translate -> Translations:Reading/Web/Desktop Improvements/Frequently asked questions/565/fr which EN is -> "=== How to fix the coordinates displaying incorrectly near the languages button? ==="

on page -> https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=agg-Desktop_Improvements&language=fr&filter=%21translated&action=page i get in the suggestion box from Mint ->

"=== Comment réparer les coordonnées qui s'affichent incorrectement près du bouton Langues ? Je suis là."

It should be ->

"=== Comment corriger les coordonnées qui s'affichent incorrectement à côté du bouton des langues ? ==="

where second "===" is closing the section title, and the left proposed "Je suis là." is a nonsense here. --Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 10:05, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Requesting option to select sub-section instead of section

[edit]

I highly appreciate the effort to make content translation accessible for countless editors who don't have a laptop.

While translating on mobile, I am able to find sections to translate and publish. I understand this is a key improvement in mobile editing. However, whenever I select a section, I have to translate the whole section along with its multiple subsections before publishing that part. This is problematic when Wikipedians like me are accustomed to translating in small to medium increments which generally last for one or two paras before publishing while using laptop. This allows me to contribute whenever I find a little time in my schedule. Unfortunately, currently this is not possible when translating on mobile. Therefore, I would like to suggest providing an option to select subsections for translation, which would help mitigate this issue. Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 15:26, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you @Pavan santhosh.s, for your suggestion; I would like to point out that with section translation, you can save the paragraphs or sentences you have translated in a section (clicking on the "done" button on the top right corner saves the sentence or paragraph). You can return to the translation by clicking the "in progress" icon to continue the translation of the section you started at any time without losing the draft, and once you are done with the section, you can publish it.
Breaking it down so that people can publish sentences, paragraphs or subsections might be chaotic and can lead to fragmentation of articles that are disjointed in meaning and other issues. I hope this helps, feel free to ask me more questions about saving your translated paragraphs when using the Section translation tool. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 22:09, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Referencing on the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikipedia

[edit]

Thanks for this tool and we the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikimedians Community appreciate the efforts made.

I tried translating on my mobile device and found it simple and interesting. I also shared it on our WhatsApp platform and editors of Ghanaian Pidgin are very excited about this tool.

One thing I realized was, initially, when translating using the Content translation tool, references appear in 'errors (web, journals etc.)' if it is copied directly from English Wikipedia so I omitted the references thinking it will appear same on the Section translation tool. But I skipped a reference and saw that it appeared as it appears on the English Wikipedia after I published. I tried going back to insert the references I omitted but couldn't. Is there a way we can go back to already published sections to make that correction? Thanks DaSupremo (talk) 13:47, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, as far as I have experienced, you will go back to Content translation tool, and you need to overwrite the published page with the revised output when you inish mending the reference there in.
  • Be minded the system sometimes warns you that original English page having been updated, and you still can work on the version you applied, as long as you do not choose to work from the scratch.
1) Do you find the page that you have worked on, when you return to Content translation tool? Find three boxes at top-left, which are: Suggestions / In progress / Published.
2) When pressing the Published button, do you find the page you have "finished" and published?
3) Can you re-open "finished" one you wish to mend the reference from the list? Omotecho (talk) 16:57, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply. I will try it again DaSupremo (talk) 17:08, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Even after sorting out the section translations in the overview, I keep getting the same ones.
