I love popcorn! It is one of my favorite snacks to make and eat especially for movies or TV. There are so many ways to cook popcorn and one of my favorite ways is going back to the old-school way of making it. In this recipe, learn how to make popcorn on the stove using a saucepan or skillet.
Ingredients

To make popcorn on the stove you need just a few simple ingredients:
- Popcorn kernels – My favorite brand is the classic Orville Redenbacher kind. They are more expensive but worth it.
- Butter – I typically use unsalted butter but salted butter works great too. You can also use oil instead of butter. Something like coconut oil, avocado oil, or Ghee.
- Seasonings – Salt, garlic powder, paprika, parmesan cheese, are some of my favorite popcorn seasonings.

Tools/Equipment
- Saucepan or Skillet – I use my 12-inch saucepan with a lid because it allows me to make more popcorn, but you can use any size. Cast iron works great.
- Deep pot – If you don’t have a saucepan or skillet use a deep pot or dutchoven.
- Foil – Foil works great in place of a lid. Just make sure to poke holes in the foil.
How to Pop Popcorn on the Stove using a saucepan or skillet

Add the butter or oil and the popcorn kernels to your saucepan, skillet, or deep pot.

Add the pan to the stovetop burner and set the heat between medium and medium-hi. Add the lid, or foil if you don’t have a lid. Don’t forget to poke holes in the foil if you are using that. Gently move the pan or pot back and forth.

It will take a few minutes before the popcorn starts popping. 4 to 6 minutes in total. Keep popping the kernels and moving the pan back and forth until there are just a few seconds in between each popped kernel. Remove the pan from the heat and turn off the stove.

Now it is time to season that popcorn. Add the popcorn to a bowl and then season with salt, melted butter, garlic powder, paprika, parmesan cheese, specific popcorn seasonings, etc. Enjoy!
How long does homemade popcorn last?
Homemade popped popcorn will last a week or so in an airtight container after popped but it always tastes better the same day or right after it is popped.
