I absolutely love making and eating muffins for breakfast, brunch, or just a snack. And if I can help it, I love homemade muffins. One of my favorite kinds of muffins to make and eat is these delicious apple muffins topped with a yummy crumble or streusel. If you love muffins too, give this easy recipe a try!
Ingredients

To make homemade apple muffins, you need the following simple ingredients:
- Flour – Use all-purpose flour. You can use self-rising flour as well, don’t add any baking powder or salt.
- Sugar – I normally use all white sugar, but you can use half white and half brown sugar if you want.
- Salt
- Baking powder
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Cooking oil – You can use canola oil, vegetable oil, lard, avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil, etc. Or if you like you can use melted butter instead, but the muffins will be a little drier.
- Egg
- Milk – I normally use whole milk, but pretty much any milk will work, including non-dairy milk.
- Vanilla extract
- Apple – I always use Granny Smith apples, but any fresh apples will work, like Pink Lady or Honeycrisp apples.
Crumble Topping
- White granulated sugar
- All-purpose flour (not self-rising)
- Butter – salted butter or unsalted butter is fine
- Cinnamon
NOTE: All the exact amounts will be found in the printable recipe card below.

Tools/Equipment
- Whisk
- Large mixing bowl
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Peeler
- Muffin pan. This is my favorite muffin pan (affiliate link). It is ceramic nonstick and just works amazingly.
How to make apple muffins from scratch

Preheat the oven to 400°F/205C.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg.

In a large bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: the egg, oil, milk, and vanilla extract. Then add the flour mixture and mix, using a silicone or wooden spoon. If the batter is a little thick, add 1 to 2 additional Tbsp of milk.
TIP: If you want extra moist muffins, add 1/2 cup of sour cream to the batter.

Rinse and dry your apple. You can peel it if you wish; I typically do. Next, chop it up into little chunks; the smaller the better. Add those apple chunks and fold them into the batter. Just like that, your apple muffin batter is ready to go.

Next, make the crumble or crumb topping or streusel topping. Add the softened butter to a medium bowl along with the sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Mix with a fork to make small to large clumps. Make sure there are no dry bits left.
Bake the Homemade Apple Muffins

Scoop the batter evenly into a muffin pan (affiliate link) with paper cups, silicone muffin cups, or any muffin liners. Use an ice cream scoop or two spoons. You should be able to get 12 muffins. Next, sprinkle the crumble/streusel topping evenly on top.

Bake at 400°F/205°C for 20 to 28 minutes until the muffin tops are golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the center of a muffin. In my oven, 25 minutes is usually enough time.
Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy! Seriously, these muffins are so tasty!
How long do these apple cinnamon muffins last?
They can be stored open at room temperature for about 1 full day, and the crumble will stay crispy. After that, I stored them in an airtight container at room temperature for another 2 days, but the crumble would get soft. If you still have some left after that, store them in the fridge for a few more days or freeze them for a few months.
Can I use gluten-free flour to make gluten-free muffins?
Yes! You sure can. Just use your favorite 1:1 gluten-free flour mixture.
