Apple reportedly acquiring British music analytics service Semetric
Apple reportedly has acquired music analytics service Semetric, according to The Guardian. The British startup is responsible for the Musicmetric analytics tool that allows clients to track sales data, BitTorrent downloads and other metrics such as social network statistics and Spotify streaming. Apple declined to comment on this potential acquisition, noting that "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plan." Details on the acquisition are not available, but it is likely that Apple may use Semetric's technology to improve its Beats Music service. Musicmetric's dashboard may provide musicians and music labels with a central hub to track iTunes sales, Beats Music streams and possibly engagement on other services. Apple is rumored to be working on a refresh of Beats Music following the US$3M acquisition of Beats Electronics last year.
Apple takes center stage in Presidential State of the Union address
All eyes and ears were on President Obama last night during the State of the Union address, but Apple inadvertently stole some of the President's spotlight. While political commenters discussed the President's new policies following the speech, the talk of the tech world focused on Apple and the prevalence of the Apple logo in the press gallery during the event. Volkswagen replaces booth babes with iPad-centric robot at 2015 Detroit Auto Show
At the 2015 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen replaced its female booth babes with an iPad-powered droid that was used to interact with show attendees, reports psfk. The robot replacement moved like a Segway and had an iPad that communicated with those who approached it. The remote-controlled droid roamed the show floor around the German car maker's exhibit and had the ability to both see and talk to people. The iPad also provided a touchscreen interface that allowed visitors to learn more about Volkswagen automobiles. Apple releases calligraphy video to celebrate upcoming Hangzhou store
To create excitement for its upcoming Hangzhou retail store, Apple today posted a video to its Chinese website that depicts a mural on the outside of the store. The video shows the mural being painted by well-known calligrapher Wang Dongling. According to reddit user Studyro (via Business Insider), the writing is a Chinese poem, West Lake, written by poet Su Shi of the Song Dynasty, who died in 1101. The light of water sparkles on a sunny day, and misty mountains lend excitement to the rain. I like to compare the west lake to "Miss West". Pretty in a gay dress, and pretty in simple again. The poem reportedly was selected because it describes West Lake in Hangzhou, the location of the Apple Store.
