Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a hat-trick, including a stoppage-time penalty, as Crystal Palace fought back from two goals down to draw with Bournemouth in a six-goal thriller at Selhurst Park.

In an incredible finish, Mateta completed his treble in the 97th minute after Marc Guehi had been wrestled to the ground by Bournemouth's Bafode Diakite as a left-wing corner was being taken.

There was still time for further drama but Mateta, who has now scored seven goals for the Eagles this season, blazed a potentially match-winning chance over the bar in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

Teenage striker Eli Kroupi, 19, had earlier scored twice on his first Premier League start as Bournemouth were on course for a victory that would have taken them temporarily top of the table.

Mateta scored twice in a five-minute spell to make it 2-2, before Ryan Christie restored Bournemouth's lead in the 89th minute, but it was not enough for the victory.

It continued a great spell in Mateta's career as he made his France debut on 10 October against Azerbaijan and then scored his first international goal three days later in a 2-2 draw with Iceland.

Palace are now eighth in the Premier League, while Bournemouth are fourth.

The Cherries would have moved top with the three points, though they would have then been ousted if Arsenal, who began the day top, avoided defeat in their late game at Fulham.

Bournemouth analysis: Iraola gets Cherries fans dreaming, before Mateta's intervention

Iraola 'angry and upset' with late penalty decision

Boss Andoni Iraola is in his third season in charge of Bournemouth - and what a job he is doing.

The Cherries finished 15th, only five points above the relegation zone under Gary O'Neil in 2022-23, but since Iraola's arrival they have come 12th and ninth - their joint-highest finish in league football.

However, despite losing four key players in the summer - centre-halves Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi, left-back Milos Kerkez and winger Dango Ouattara, who moved in big-money transfers to Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain, Liverpool and Brentford respectively - Iraola has his side's fans dreaming of glory.

After Kroupi's first goal, the away fans chanted they were top of the league, and then how they were going to win it.

While it is far too early for any serious discussions like that, there is a real chance Iraola could guide Bournemouth to their best position and make them serious challengers for a run at securing European football, something they have never achieved.

Such has been their progression, they will be disappointed to leave south London with only a point.

With Evanilson out with a calf injury, Kroupi was handed a first Premier League start following his move from French club Lorient and put the visitors ahead after only seven minutes.

It came after Justin Kluivert's inswinging corner from the left caused problems and the ball bounced off Eagles defender Maxence Lacroix when challenging Antoine Semenyo in the air, dropping perfectly for Kroupi to head in from close range.

Semenyo was heavily involved in Bournemouth's second as he was too fast for Chris Richards down the left flank and his cross was not dealt with by England defender Marc Guehi, with Kroupi blasting home the loose ball.

After Mateta made it 2-2 the Cherries thought they had gained their fifth league win of the season when Christie converted from captain Marcus Tavernier's pass, only for Mateta to deny them the victory late on.

Crystal Palace analysis: Mateta rescues Eagles after rare poor defensive display

'Dangerous' Mateta could have scored five - Glasner

Earlier on Saturday, manager Oliver Glasner revealed that captain Guehi had told the club he will not sign a new contract and would leave either in January or next summer.

Newcastle had a £60m bid for the England defender rejected in January and a deadline-day £35m move to Liverpool in September collapsed as the Eagles were unable to secure a replacement.

Despite all the transfer speculation, Guehi's professionalism has remained unquestioned and once again he led the Palace side, though Glasner will be disappointed with their defending.

Before this match they had conceded just five goals in seven league matches, with only Arsenal having a tighter defence. However, they left Kroupi free to head in unchallenged for his first goal, and Guehi making an uncharacteristic error with a poor clearance for his second.

But Palace were a completely different side after the break. They thought Bournemouth should have gone down to 10 men when Marcos Senesi brought down Ismaila Sarr only for referee Jarred Gillett, having been sent to the pitchside monitor by the video assistant referee (VAR), to stick with his original call of a yellow card.

Mateta's first two goals, both converted after fine work by Daniel Munoz, brought Palace level, only for Christie to be given too much space in another defensive error.

But Mateta rescued a point late on, though Glasner will be unhappy with the three goals his side conceded.

What's next?

It is an exciting few weeks for Crystal Palace as they entertain Cypriot side AEK Larnaca in the Conference League on Thursday for the Eagles' first ever home game in the main phase of a European competition.

After that, they have two daunting away matches, at Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, 26 October and then at Liverpool three days later in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

Bournemouth have a full week without a match and do not play until Sunday, 26 October when they entertain managerless Nottingham Forest, who sacked boss Ange Postecoglou immediately after their 3-0 loss to Chelsea earlier on Saturday.
