Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Thomas Muller, Kevin de Bruyne, Erling Haaland - just some of the stellar names Pep Guardiola has coached in illustrious his career.

But the Spaniard has possibly picked out a surprise name as a "top" prospect.

"Rayan [Cherki] is one of the huge talents I have ever seen in my career, technically and individually," said Guardiola. "He is top."

France international Cherki signed from Lyon for £30m in the summer and featured at the Club World Cup, before scoring in the opening Premier League game of the season at Wolves.

However, after suffering a thigh injury in August, he missed six games before returning during Saturday's victory over Everton.

"The question is how he settles into what we want to do and how he reads every action that the game needs," Guardiola said. "He started really well at the [Club] World Cup but has been off for a few weeks.

"[With] the talent that he has, I have the feeling that most of the time the ball comes to him the situation [will be] better. Not all the time he has to do exceptional things - he just has to play football.

"But he has something. I like that he doesn't feel the pressure, he's like a street player and give me the ball, give me the ball. He has had a short time here and he needs time. These type of players are so intuitive. They see everything."

Talking ahead of the game against Villarreal, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Rodri has travelled with the squad to Spain despite having not trained due to injury.

The Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder is unlikely to feature against either the La Liga side in the Champions League or Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend.

In Rodri's absence, Nico Gonzalez has deputised in the defensive midfield role for City and has earned praise from his manager.

"It is not always easy when you arrive in a different style to maybe [you have] played in the past," Guardiola said.

"We are really pleased with his behaviour. He will be better and better, month by month and year by year. He is so coachable and open-minded and a lovely guy.

"He has to be himself. If you play with top players, you always learn if you are open [to it]. 'How can my game be better?' But Nico has to be Nico. Nico is fantastic, but just by his age he can get better."

Rayan Ait-Nouri is also a doubt for the Villarreal game but in a boost for Guardiola, the trio of Omar Marmoush, Rayan Cherki and Mateo Kovacic returned to his matchday squad against Everton on Saturday.

It was 8.25pm by the time Jose Mourinho finished up on Monday evening.

The Benfica manager had just spent the best part of half an hour answering questions in both Portuguese and English ahead of tonight's Champions League game against Newcastle United.

Yet Mourinho looked like he could have talked for another while longer in the media suite at St James' Park.

It is hard to think of an opposition manager who has such an affection for another club without ever taking charge of them.

But that was the profound impact mentor Sir Bobby Robson left on his former assistant during their time together at Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona.

Mourinho, a two-time winner of the competition, could not have been more complimentary about Newcastle.

He predicted Newcastle are "closer to bigger things". He spoke about how "happy" he was after opposite number Eddie Howe ended the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy last season. He even revealed he told his players that the atmosphere at St James' was "beautiful".

But it goes without saying that Mourinho won't be quite so friendly when the game kicks off.

Having only ever won three games at St James', the Benfica manager will be desperate to get a rare result at "Mr Robson's home".

The Magpies boss confirmed that there were no fresh injury concerns for his side prior to the match.

However, Howe added that midfielder Sandro Tonali would be "touch and go" for Tuesday evening as he battles an illness.

    Newcastle v Benfica (20:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe speaking in his pre-match news conference about whether this is a transitional period for his side: "Whenever you bring players in and lose players, in a sense it brings the word transition, but hopefully we've got the balance right. [By] not losing our identity and how we play. I don't think we have because you can see what we're trying to do.

"The effort's there, commitment is there but sometimes we haven't played with enough quality. As long as we see heart, endeavour and attitude, we'll get consistent results again. There is a sense of finding a new way of doing things."

On Anthony Elanga, who is yet to score or assist for the club: "Anthony is an outstanding player. There's a settling in period that he's going through and he's having to make slight adjustments. He's got a lot more to give and will in the future so I've got no doubts about his success here."

  11. Response needed against Benficapublished at 15:16 BST

    Newcastle v Benfica (20:00 BST)

    Ciaran Kelly
    BBC Sport Newcastle United reporter

Newcastle suffered a 2-1 defeat against Brighton at the weekend to leave Howe's side in 13th place in the Premier League. And there is no time for a hangover as they quickly return to Champions League action against Benfica.

Danny Welbeck's 84th-minute winner for Albion on Saturday drew parallels with another late sucker punch Newcastle suffered, against Arsenal last month.

Their response to that setback was emphatic, just a few days later recording their biggest Champions League win by beating Union Saint-Gilloise 4-0 away from home.

Undoubtedly, Benfica will offer a sterner test.

Though the Portuguese giants have lost both of their opening European fixtures - against Qarabag and Chelsea - they were drawn from pot two for a reason after reaching the last 16 of the competition in three of the past four seasons.

They also have a two-time Champions League winner in manager Jose Mourinho, who will be desperate to prove he can still make an impact at this level.

It feels like an acid test of Newcastle's own European ambitions with goalkeeper Nick Pope hoping to take another small step towards qualifying for the knockout stages.

  12. Newcastle's inconsistent formpublished at 15:13 BST

    Newcastle United

Newcastle have struggled to find any kind of consistency in 2025-26 so far.

Eddie Howe's side sit 14th in the Premier League after eight games played and are yet to win back-to-back matches in the top flight.

A look at their last seven fixtures in all competitions highlights the inconsistency:

    • Brighton 2-1 Newcastle
    • Newcastle 2-0 Nottingham Forest
    • Union SG 0-4 Newcastle (Champions League)
    • Newcastle 1-2 Arsenal
    • Newcastle 4-1 Bradford City (EFL Cup)
    • Bournemouth 0-0 Newcastle

  14. Arteta loved seeing Saliba watch Atletico on team buspublished at 15:08 BST

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport Arsenal reporter

In the aftermath of Arsenal's 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday, there was a picture doing the rounds on social media.

It was not of the goal or of any of the celebrations. Instead, it was an image of defender William Saliba watching Atletico Madrid, the Gunners' opponents in the Champions League, on the team bus leaving Craven Cottage.

There is a quick turnaround between the games with just two days of preparation before Diego Simeone brings his Atletico side to north London.

The Gunners have only conceded three goals this season, keeping eight clean sheets and boss Mikel Arteta says he was happy to see the dedication from members of his squad.

"Very pleased because I didn't encourage it - that came from them," Arteta said.

"We know this will be a tough one, so the earlier we think about it the better. I love that initiative from the players."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he "looks up to" Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and believes the Argentine would be a success in the Premier League.

Simeone has been in charge of the La Liga side since December 2011 - approaching 14 years.

"Well, obviously there is someone that I look up to and learn from him in many situations and what is for me outstanding is his passion," Arteta said.

"I think for how long he's been in the game and in the same club with the same players, how you still have that hand and that capacity to transmit such an energy and willingness to win.

"It's a very tough environment that we live in and to keep convincing players you have to be extraordinary as well.

"I don't know [him] personally but everything I heard about him is that he's so good at doing that. That's one of the reasons why you are able to sustain at that level.

"If he works in the Champions League, which is the highest competition in Europe, he can do it anywhere.

"You have to come here and try it and feel it, but I'm very sure that his know-how is unbelievable, and his character and willingness will take him anywhere."

Atletico Madrid come into this game against Arsenal on the back of a 1-0 win against Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday.

Diego Simeone's side have won four, drawn four and lost one of their nine games in the Spanish top flight this season and sit fourth - eight points behind leaders Real Madrid.

In Europe, they began with a 3-2 defeat at Liverpool but bounced back with a 5-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

"We come with the hope of putting on a great performance and securing a victory, which we need, away from home and in the Champions League, and of approaching the match with the intensity it deserves," Simeone said ahead of the game.

Meanwhile, Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, who joined Atleti from Manchester City last year, added: "We didn't start in the best way but now the team is doing very well.

"We suffered some injuries at the beginning but I think now we're in great shape to compete with anyone."

  20. 'Tricky to set a return date' - Odegaard on injurypublished at 14:54 BST

It's not all been good news for the Arsenal midfield, though.

Captain Martin Odegaard has said "it's tricky to set a return date" from his knee injury.

The midfielder suffered a medial collateral ligament injury in the Gunners' win over West Ham on 4 October and is not expected to return until after the November international break.

"A lot depends on how it goes when I start getting back on the pitch," he wrote in the club's matchday programme ahead of the Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid.

"Sometimes it can be quite sore when you start passing the ball and shooting and all these things with that leg, so it’s really hard to say a date."

Odegaard said: "The rehab is going well. I’ve been back for a week now and working every day to keep my fitness up as well as trying to heal the injury, so it’s busy days at the moment.

"I feel like I’ve been really unlucky a few times this season. It was a knee-to-knee contact in the West Ham game, and at the time I didn’t know if it was bad or not because they can be quite painful, but normally you can run it off."So that's why I tried to keep going, to see if it was getting better. I was hoping it was just a knock that would improve in a couple of minutes. But it didn't get better and I felt like something was wrong, so in the end it was better to come off.

"As soon as we got inside, the medical team had a proper look at it. When the adrenaline stopped flowing and it settled down a bit, then it was quite sore.

"All I can say is I'm progressing really well at the moment. I think we will know more when I start getting back on the training pitches and we'll see how that goes. If that goes really well then it can be quick."
