So you think the new Caterham looks ridiculous? Well it’s certainly not the only bizarre creation seen in Formula One. Over the years the sport has seen some absolutely insane innovations and we’ve compiled ten of the best.
Stupid wings, six wheels and even a stepladder. They’re all just below.
10. 2001 Arrows A22
Arrows showed up to the 2001 Monaco Grand Prix with what appears to some kind of target for the drivers to look through. Unsurprisingly it was quickly banned before the race.
9. 2008 Honda RA108
In 2008 Honda were so desperate, they attached some bunny ears to the front nose of the car. Unsurprisingly they still sucked.
8. 1969 Brabham BT26
In 1969 wings started to appear on cars for the first time. As you can see they looked completely unsafe and appeared to be held up by flimsy bits of metal.
7. 1977 Ferrari 312T6
After the success of the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34, Ferrari made an attempt at their own six-wheeler. Strangely they mounted 4 wheels on the rear axis. Not sure whether iit was to make it faster or to block people like they do in ‘Wacky Races’.
6. 1983 Tyrrell 012
Another innovative Tyrrell, this time with the craziest but coolest rear wing I think I’ve ever seen. The car kind of looks like it belongs in an eighties Sci-Fi movie.
5. 1985 Arrows A5
“Can’t see shit!”
4. 1978 Brabham BT46
The infamous Brabham fan car was designed by Gordon Murray and won on it’s debut, the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix. When the fan was not in use, it was covered by a dustbin lid. True Story.
3. 1975 March 751
The March team decided to fit it’s 1975 car with skirting-boards in the hope it would go faster. It sure does look horrendous.
2. 1979 Ensign N179
Could this be the ugliest F1 car ever made? The Ensign N179 appears to have a stepladder instead of a front nose cone… but hey, whatever.
1. 1968 Brabham BT23C
I saw this picture and genuinely loled. I mean, it looks like he’s trying to get a bookshelf home from IKEA. This Brabham concept was actually tested for Formula 2 but let’s not get into technicalities.
