The Full HD 3D Technology Story

An Entirely New Viewing Experience

Powerful 3D Realism Is Transforming the World of Images

From the advent of moving pictures to the invention of TV, historic developments drove image technologies through the 20th century. Among them, color and high definition (HD) were two major advances. Now, Panasonic presents a third breakthrough in the form of full-HD 3D. This new viewing experience is creating a new dimension of videorealism.

Technological Innovations Driving Image Evolution

To raise the emotional impact and excitement of viewing, image creators and technicians have followed an evolutionary path toward the highest levels of image creation. Today, we greet the 3D generation, while looking forward to even further image evolution.

  • Image Production Sites
  • Instead of tape, the P2HD camera uses the P2 card, which has become the de facto standard for broadcast device memory. The twin-lens P2HD system is now being developed for 3D filming.
  • Software Production
  • Panasonic is rapidly advancing the development of new 3D-ready authoring systems, beginning with the 3D image compression technology of our MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Video Encoder, that were made possible by our many years of working together with movie studios.
  • Homes
  • Panasonic is developing full-HD 3D home theater systems to bring movie quality 3D right into your home.
*Scheduled for release in late 2010

Frame Sequential Method

Panasonic selected the frame sequential method to bring cinema-like realism to 3D movies at home. Separate images for the left and right eyes are recorded with 1920 X 1080 full-HD quality and alternately played at high speed. By watching these images through special LCD glasses that are timed to open and close the right and left lenses in synchronization with the alternating images, the viewer is treated to exciting 3D realism. This brings cinema-level images right into the living room, without the problems of image deterioration and blurring that were common to conventional 3D systems.

One think-tank within Panasonic is behind this total end-to-end system – which starts with Full HD 3D capture, authoring, and disc production, and extends all the way to an astonishing home theater experience. It’s called the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory Advanced Authoring Center.

step 1

1. 3D movie enters the Blu-ray Encoding Room where it undergoes a high-definition compression.

step 2

2. Once encoded, it moves to the Blu-ray Authoring Room to edit the title and menu screen while arranging picture, music, and graphics.

step 3

3. The movie then goes through an extensive Q&A; process where image and sound quality are verified.

step 4

4. A test disc is created.
