Draft

[edit]

On behalf of Trendyol, and as part of my work at Beutler Ink, I will be submitting a series of edit requests for this Wikipedia article. As always, I have disclosed by conflict of interest above and on my profile page.

There are quite a few issues with the current article, including inaccurate and outdated text, inappropriate use of the company's official website, and poor organization (as evidenced by two sections relating to investment history). My edit requests are an attempt to make the entry more complete, accurate, and organized.

I'll be submitting specific requests below. Thanks in advance for any help! Inkian Jason (talk) 17:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of content based on company website

[edit]

First, I'd like to seek removal of Trendyol#Products, which includes only the following sentence sourced by the company' website:

  • Trendyol's main product categories include men and women's fashion, shoes and bags, accessories and watches, children's products, cosmetics, electronics, books, hobby and lifestyle, sports and outdoor, and electronics.[1]

References

  1. ^ "Trendyol: One Stop Fashion Shop". www.trendyol.com.

I'd like to think this is a noncontroversial suggestion but would prefer if editors could review and update the article appropriately. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 17:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

 Done. Axad12 (talk) 20:17, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Group companies subsection

[edit]

The Trendyol#Trendyol_Go section has a single sentence sourced by the company's website:

  • Trendyol Go is Trendyol's food and grocery delivery service.[1]

References

  1. ^ "Who We Are". www.trendyol.com. Retrieved 2023-07-28.

I propose removal and would appreciate if someone could make this update for me.

Thanks again! Inkian Jason (talk) 17:59, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

Thanks for removing the inappropriately sourced text. Next, I'd like to suggest a start to a new History section focused on the company's founding and executive leadership:

Trendyol was co-founded by Demet Mutlu (pictured in 2013) in 2010.

Trendyol was co-founded by Demet Mutlu, Evren Üçok,[1] and Begüm Tekin,[2] in 2010.[3] Üçok is the Chairperson,[3] Erdem Inan is the CEO,[4] and Çağlayan Çetin is the President.[5]

I've included an image of Demet Mutlu because she is independently notable and because the article is otherwise unillustrated. If implemented, the entry will also require changes to the introduction and infobox. Reviewing editors are welcome to make adjustments now but I plan to submit a replacement infobox and improved introductory language in subsequent requests. For now, my goal is to add mention of the company's co-founders and current leadership based on Wikipedia-appropriate sources.

Thanks for reviewing and updating the article appropriately, Inkian Jason (talk) 21:34, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Are you just requesting the image be added to the infobox? PK650 (talk) 06:31, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@PK650 I'm suggesting the image be added to a new History section. For organizational purposes, I think the article would benefit from having a History section with subsections for Funding and ownership, Operations, and Sponsorships (as seen here). The article is currently poorly organized and I plan to submit additional edit requests seeking improvement, but for now I think creating History would be helpful. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 14:45, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Inkian Jason  Done. Requested edit does not appear to violate WP:NPOV because it is basic information about the founding and leadership, with no apparent POV. Sourcing seems reliable per the WP:Verifiability policy regardless of bias within sourcing, per the above reasoning (basic information regarding leadership.) No original research seen. I will attempt to expand on the History section and respond to your other edit requests to this page in the next week. Thank you for your edit request, and your contribution to Wikipedia. —Sparkle and Fade (talkcontributions) 22:00, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Sparkle & Fade Thank you for reviewing and updating the article. Much appreciated! Inkian Jason (talk) 15:33, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Revert request

[edit]

I am submitting a request to revert these recent changes by an unregistered user. The claims are verified by reliable sources and the text was implemented based on the above edit request. @PK650, Sparkle and Fade, and STEMinfo: I am putting this request on your radar given previous feedback. Thank you, Inkian Jason (talk) 14:16, 28 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Funding and ownership

[edit]

As mentioned above and presented in this draft, I would like to propose streamlining the article by having a single subsection dedicated to Trendyol's funding and ownership history, instead of covering this topic in three different areas: the introduction, the "Sale to Alibaba Group" section, and the "Investors" section.

More specifically, I suggest removing the following three pieces of text:

1) In August 2021, Trendyol entered into agreements to raise $1.5 billion from a number of investors, valuing the company at $16.5 billion. With the new funding, Trendyol became Turkey’s first decacorn (a start-up with a valuation of over $10 billion).[1] The round was co-led by General Atlantic, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Princeville Capital and sovereign wealth funds, ADQ (UAE) and Qatar Investment Authority.[2]
  • Reason: This seems overly detailed for an article's introduction and more appropriate for the article body. The same content details are covered in the subsection proposed below.

2) The Chinese company Alibaba Group became a partner of Trendyol in 2018 for $728 million.[3] Alibaba Group invested another $350 million in Trendyol's capital increases in 2018 and 2020, increasing its partnership share to 86.5%.[4]

3) Founded with an initial capital of 300,000 USD, Trendyol received investment from Tiger Global and Kleiner Perkins in 2010–11 and EBRD in 2014.[5] Alibaba Group became a shareholder of Trendyol in 2018. Following the investment made by Alibaba, Tiger Global, Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, and EBRD were withdrawn. Alibaba became a shareholder of the company by acquiring the shares of 3 international shareholders in Trendyol.[6] In August 2021, Trendyol had entered into agreements to raise $1.5 billion from a number of high-profile investors, valuing the company at $16.5 billion. The round was co-led by General Atlantic, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, as well as Princeville Capital and sovereign wealth funds, ADQ (UAE) and the Qatar Investment Authority, the company said in a statement. Thus, while Trendyol's valuation increased to 16.5 billion dollars, the company was upgraded to the 'decacorn' category, which is used for companies with a valuation exceeding 10 billion dollars.[7]

  • Reason: This content is covered in the proposed subsection below, using more reliable secondary coverage.

I propose replacing these three pieces of text with the following Funding and ownership subsection, which is based on reliable news sources:

Six months after Trendyol was founded in 2010, American firm Tiger Global invested in the company; subsequent investors included the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and American venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins.[1] Alibaba Group has invested $1.4 billion in Trendyol. Alibaba invested an initial $728 million dollars in 2018[2] and followed with an additional $350 million at a $9.4 billion valuation in 2021.[3][4][5] In August 2021, Trendyol raised $1.5 billion at a $16.5 billion valuation;[6] Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company (ADQ), General Atlantic, Princeville Capital, Qatar Investment Authority, and SoftBank Vision Fund 2 were among funding round participants. The investment was SoftBank's first in Turkey and Trendyol became the first Turkish business to be named a decacorn (valuation exceeding $10 billion).[7][8] Alibaba has a 70 percent stake in Trendyol, as of 2024.[9]

My goal here is to streamline and update the content, using Wikipedia-appropriate sources. If editors agree this is an article improvement, I'd appreciate if someone could implement the proposed changes on my behalf as I generally avoid direct editing given my COI. Thanks for reviewing! Inkian Jason (talk) 22:12, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewing request.... As this is a major addition to the article in an area I'm not familiar with, it will likely take me longer to do things such as assess the reliability of sources, the amount of weight on the funding and ownership, cleaning up the article before implementing it, etc. In other words, this is going to take a while and may need a more thorough review. Thank you for your patience. —Sparkle and Fade (talkcontributions) 00:27, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Second opinion requested: While the sources do indeed verify the text, the reliability of some of the sources (Daily Sabah, The National, etc.) seem spotty, and in tandem with the principles in WP:COIRESPONSE which affirms that edits should be carefully checked to comply with policy, especially with commercial interests involved, WP:ECREE which states that exceptional statements (particularly the decacorn claim) should be backed by multiple high quality sources, and my own concern that the aforementioned sources may not be independent involving concerns that the sources are influenced by their respective states, which may have a vested interest in a highly-valued company in the region. If this edit (and the rest of the requested edits) are to be implemented, they would need further review from another more experienced reviewer. Apologies for the late review, and thanks for your time. —Sparkle and Fade (talkcontributions) 04:29, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Done this isn't a major revision - it's just reorganizing the existing content and adding better sources. STEMinfo (talk) 21:35, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And I did read Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_321#RfC:_Daily_Sabah. Consensus is that Daily Sabah is OK for non-controversial topics. STEMinfo (talk) 21:54, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@STEMinfo Thank you for reviewing and updating the article. Inkian Jason (talk) 23:47, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@STEMinfo Part of this request was to remove the Investors section as redundant to Trendyol#Funding_and_ownership. You marked this request as "Done" (thanks again!) but kept this section. Was that for a specific reason or are you comfortable removing this section? My goal is to streamline related content, per this draft. Thanks, Inkian Jason (talk) 14:05, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Operations

[edit]

As mentioned above and presented in this draft, I would like to propose creating an Operations subsection under History. Later, I plan to propose additional information about the company's operations in Europe as well as the Middle East and the Caucasus, but for now I would like to focus on operational details specific to Turkey (where Trendydol is based). More specifically, I suggest adding the following text, which is based on Wikipedia-appropriate news sources:

In Turkey, the company's app combines a marketplace that uses delivery service Trendyol Express, food and grocery deliveries via the courier network Trendyol Go, and second hand platform Dolap, among other services.[1]

In October 2021, the Turkish Competition Authority opened an investigation to determine if Trendyol had violated competition law.[2][3] The competition regulator's investigation concluded in July 2023 and Trendyol was fined approximately 61.3 million for algorithm manipulation and for using data from third-party sellers.[4]

In 2022, Trendyol became the first Turkish e-commerce business to design a sustainability plan.[5][6] The company's plan addresses carbon reduction, human rights, packing and production, waste management, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Trendyol also establishes digital centers offering technology training and encouraging smart agriculture practices in rural Turkey as part of the Villages of Tomorrow programme in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, and has dedicated initiatives that support women's empowerment and young artists.[7][8]

Trendyol had logistics centers in Ankara and an export operation center at Istanbul Airport in 2023.[4] In 2024, the company launched its first in-house large language model,[9] won in the "e-export" category at the Turkish Exporters Assembly's award ceremony,[10] and co-organized an e-commerce hackathon in Adana Province for Teknofest.[11]

There is some overlap with existing text in the Wikipedia article. I think the above text is appropriate replacement text for the Group companies section (which has three short subsections with probably too much detail and some unsourced text), as well as the Algorithm manipulation subsection. I propose removing these sections because the above proposed text covers Dolap, Trendyol Go, and the Turkish Competition Authority. Again, my goal is to group text specific to Trendyol's operations in Turkey, as seen here, and I plan to submit separate requests about operations outside Turkey.

Overall, I am working to streamline and update this article, using Wikipedia-appropriate sources. If editors agree this suggestion is an improvement, I'd appreciate if someone could implement the proposed changes for me as I generally avoid direct editing. Thanks again for reviewing! Inkian Jason (talk) 22:37, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done except for moving the anti-competitive info into the operations section. There was too much detail you omitted. I also preserved the group component history by adding it to history. STEMinfo (talk) 22:16, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Europe

[edit]

As mentioned above and presented in this draft, I would like to propose adding an overview of Trendyol's operations in Europe. I suggest adding this content under Operations, and in my draft I've separated out operations in Turkey (see above request) and the Middle East and the Caucasus (see request below) for organizational purposes.

For this Europe-focused section, I propose adding the following text, which is based on reliable news coverage:

Trendyol entered the European market in October 2020, launching a website serving 27 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.[1][2][3]

The company's first office outside Turkey opened in Berlin in 2022,[4][5] and approximately 1.5 million customers in Germany purchase products from 200 Turkish brands via Trendyol, as of 2024.[6] In late 2023, Trendyol announced plans to expand operations in Eastern Europe in 2024, starting in the Czech Republic,[7] Greece, Hungary, and Romania.[8] Trendyol confirmed plans to open a warehouse in Bucharest and offices in Romania in 2025.[9]

@Inkian Jason: I just read your draft and see where you are going with this. However, you're mixing in history info with operations. Offices opening go in the history section; operations simply summarizes the territory. I dislike long lists of offices per WP:NOTDIR (they are also a pain to maintain), so regional summaries and total numbers of offices should suffice. STEMinfo (talk) 22:23, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@STEMinfo Thanks for taking a look at this request, too. For this section, the proposed text only mentions Berlin as an existing office location, as well as the company's plans to open a warehouse in Bucharest and additional offices in Romania. The longer list represents nations in which the company operates, not where offices are located. Essentially, I am offering a summary of when Trendyol entered specific markets in an attempt to show the company's evolution and growth. I had assumed Wikipedia article should cover where a company operates, but you are welcome to trim and adjust the text as you see fit. I hope this helps, and thanks again for your help here. Middle East and the Caucasus

[edit]

As mentioned above and presented in this draft, I'd like to propose adding a subsection to Operations specifically focused on Trendyol's operations in the Middle East and the Caucasus. This text is separated out from similar (proposed) subsections dedicated to Turkey, where the company is headquartered, and Europe for organizational purposes.

For this subsection, I propose adding the following text, which is based on reputable news coverage:

Trendyol operates in Gulf Cooperation Council markets and has warehouses in both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).[1][2] In 2023, Trendyol announced a memorandum of understanding with a Saudi Arabian retail company to launch a fashion platform in the Gulf.[3][4] Trendyol's mobile app in the Gulf region debuted in August 2023 and reached 30,000 orders per day by November.[3] Trendyol also operates in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar.[5][6]

In 2024, Trendyol debuted its first own-brand womenswear Ramadan collection for the Gulf[7][8] and opened a pop-up store in the region at a shopping mall in Riyadh.[5][9] The company also launched an artificial intelligence-designed fashion collection exclusive to Gulf nations and confirmed plans to open offices in Dubai and Riyadh.[7]

In 2023, Trendyol signed an agreement with PASHA Holding to start operating in Azerbaijan in May.[10][11] In October 2024, Trendyol had approximately 2 million customers in Azerbaijan and inaugurated its local office in Baku.[12]

My overall goal for this project is to improve the article by adding documented and relevant information about the company's history and operations, using secondary journalistic coverage. Similar to the above request, this one seeks to add mention of where Trendyol operates, including warehouse locations and major launch efforts, plus a few other sourced operational details. I think these proposed additions offer an accurate and Wikipedia-appropriate foundation for editors to change organically over time, but I avoid editing the main space because of my COI and ask others to review and implement appropriately on my behalf. I can address questions or concerns here or on my Talk page.

Turkish Competition Authority

[edit]

In my original Operations request above, I proposed some replacement language regarding the Competition Authority's investigation. User:STEMinfo preferred to keep the article's current language and said the draft replacement left out too much detail. I very much appreciate STEMinfo's assistance reviewing the request and others on this Talk page, and I will accept whatever level of detail editors feel is necessary, but I'd like to address this content more specifically at this time.

Here's a copy of the current language, which is not entirely based on Wikipedia-appropriate sourcing:

In 2021, the Competition Authority opened an investigation against Trendyol for highlighting certain sellers and products by manipulating their algorithms. In the investigation concluded in 2023 using evidence obtained from August 2017 to September 2021, the company was fined 61 million Turkish liras for systemic algorithm manipulation and unfair use of marketplace data.[1][2][3][4]

As far as I can tell, of these four citations only one is archived secondary coverage. I propose replacing this content with the following, which is based on secondary coverage:

In October 2021, the Turkish Competition Authority opened an investigation to determine if Trendyol had violated competition law.[1][2] The competition regulator's investigation concluded in July 2023 and Trendyol was fined approximately 61.3 million for algorithm manipulation and for using data from third-party sellers.[3]

The replacement text I've proposed is not drastically different. It removes the date range for when evidenced was obtained, which I would argue is an unnecessary detail, and more accurately reflects what reliable sources say. Again, I'll accept whatever editors think is best here, but I think a closer look at these two sentences would be helpful.

I would ask editors to consider folding the Allegations and penalties content into Operations, as the subsection headings do not seem necessary or neutral. I want to invite STEMinfo to revisit this text, but also any other editors who help maintain the COI edit request queue to weigh in. Thanks for continued help here, Inkian Jason (talk) 14:47, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done Inkian Jason I made the change, but modified the text a little. Your requests are hard because you don't always clearly highlight the changes you are trying to make that paint your client in a better light, so it takes me longer to review them. In this case, the sentence that said In 2021, the Competition Authority opened an investigation against Trendyol for highlighting certain sellers and products by manipulating their algorithms. wasn't sourced that way, so I agreed to change it to In October 2021, the Turkish Competition Authority opened an investigation to determine if Trendyol had violated competition law.. But the last sentence needed to explain what they were found guilty of, so I changed it to The competition regulator's investigation concluded in July 2023, and Trendyol was fined approximately 61.3 million for for systemic algorithm manipulation and unfair use of third party marketplace data. Your version simply said "... for using data from third party sellers", without the "unfair" clarifier I added. I also changed the section title to controversies, related to your other request to blend the info into the history section. STEMinfo (talk) 00:10, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sponsorships

[edit]

As presented in this draft, I'd like to propose adding a Sponsorships section focused on Trendyol's major sponsorships. I suggest the following text, which is neutral, based on Wikipedia-appropriate sourcing, and written in summary form:

Trendyol sponsored the Turkish National Olympic Committee and the five athletes representing Turkey at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.[1] The company has also sponsored national teams with the Turkish Football Federation and the Turkish Volleyball Federation,[2][3] as well as the 2023–2024 season of the Süper Lig and the TFF 1. Lig.[4] Trendyol launched an Olympic-themed line of clothing and accessories ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, marking the first time the International Olympic Committee partnered with a Turkish brand on merchandise.[5][6] The company also sponsored the Toys of Sports exhibit at the Istanbul Toy Museum, which was co-curated by Sunay Akın and "combines the excitement of the Olympics with fascinating toys", according to Hürriyet.[7] Trendyol also became an official partner of the UEFA Euro 2024 football championship as well as the Turkish National Paralympic Committee.[8][9]

@STEMinfo: Since you've seen the draft and reviewed some of the above requests, I expect you may be anticipating this request, if you're interested in reviewing. Of course, any editors are welcome to weigh in. I don't think this content is contentious but I avoid editing the main space because of my COI. I'm asking editors to review and update the article appropriately. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 13:47, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox and introduction

[edit]

Thanks to editors who have been reviewing my requests. Since significant changes have been made to the article body, I would like to propose an updated and improved Infobox and introduction. The current ones do not mention other co-founders and have outdated ownership information. I suggest replacing the current Infobox and introduction with the following, which reflects claims made in the article body:

Trendyol
IndustryE-commerce
Founded2010; 15 years ago (2010)
Founders
Headquarters,
Key people
OwnerAlibaba Group (70%)
Websitetrendyol.com

Trendyol is a Turkish e-commerce platform headquartered in Istanbul.[1] Co-founded by Demet Mutlu, Evren Üçok, and Begüm Tekin in 2010, Trendyol is Turkey's leading e-commerce company. It has approximately 40 million customers and delivers more than one million packages daily.[2][3] The company expanded into Germany in 2022, followed by Azerbaijan and the Gulf region in 2023 and Central and Eastern Europe in 2024.

@STEMinfo: I am putting this request on your radar, since you made this recent update to the Introduction. I appreciate the update you've made and will let you and other editors decide if mention of Alibaba Group should remain in the introduction. My primary concern here is making sure the article's Infobox and introduction and up to date and match one another as well as text in the main body. Again, I don't think these changes are particularly contentious, but I avoid working in the main space directly and ask others to update the article on my behalf. Thanks for your consideration and continued help, Inkian Jason (talk) 13:56, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done @Inkian Jason: I don't mind helping, but when you request changes in order to remove info, without making it clear, it makes more work for me to fully understand the ramifications of what you're asking. You didn't make it clear why you wanted to remove Alibaba's ownership from the lead, which is a significant fact. Also, the lead is supposed to summarize what's in the article. The shipping and customer statistics you wanted to add are not in the article. They could be added to operations or history, but they can't go in the lead if they aren't already there. STEMinfo (talk) 01:59, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"Prose" tag

[edit]

@Sparkle and Fade: Thanks for your help above. I see you've added a "prose" tag, which I'd like to help address. I am under the impression this tag is to encourage converting from bullet list format to written prose. There are no bullets here, but I agree some content grouping would help with organization.

I have a couple ideas for how to possibly improve article flow and readability:

1. In my draft, there is a subsection for Europe under Operations. User:STEMinfo reviewed my request above and added the following claims to the article:

  • Trendyol entered the European market in October 2020, launching a website serving 27 countries.
  • The company's first office outside Turkey opened in Berlin in 2022. In late 2023, Trendyol announced plans to expand operations in Eastern Europe in 2024, starting in the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, and Romania. Trendyol confirmed plans to open a warehouse in Bucharest and offices in Romania in 2025.

I'll let other editors decide if a Europe subsection is helpful, but either way, I think moving these claims to the Operations section would be appropriate.

2. Similarly, my draft has a subsection for Middle East and the Caucasus under Operations. Based on this request above, User:STEMinfo added the following claims to the article:

  • Trendyol operates in Gulf Cooperation Council markets and has warehouses in both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • In 2023, Trendyol announced a memorandum of understanding with a Saudi Arabian retail company to launch a fashion platform in the Gulf. Trendyol's mobile app in the Gulf region debuted in August 2023 and reached 30,000 orders per day by November. Trendyol also operates in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar.
  • In 2024, Trendyol debuted its first own-brand womenswear Ramadan collection for the Gulf and opened a pop-up store in the region at a shopping mall in Riyadh. The company also launched an artificial intelligence-designed fashion collection exclusive to Gulf nations and confirmed plans to open offices in Dubai and Riyadh.
  • In 2023, Trendyol signed an agreement with PASHA Holding to start operating in Azerbaijan in May.
  • In October 2024, Trendyol had approximately 2 million customers in Azerbaijan and inaugurated its local office in Baku.

Again, these are operational details about a specific region that I think would be helpful to group together. Would having these two subsections, as presented in the draft, help organize content and address the tag? I invite Sparkle and Fade, STEMinfo, and other editors to help review and update the article appropriately.
