Jo Hye-yeon (Korean: 조혜연; born August 5, 2000), is a South Korean actress and singer. She debuted in 2016 as a member of girl group Gugudan under the mononym Hyeyeon. In 2022 she transitioned to acting under the stage name Jo Ah-ram (조아람).[1][2]

Early life and education

Jo was born in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. She graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul with a focus on practical music and later majored in acting at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.[3]

Career

2016–2018: Music career with Gugudan

Jo began her career in 2016 as a singer and dancer with Jellyfish Entertainment's girl group Gugudan. In 2017, she and fellow member Mina formed a sub-unit called Gugudan 5959.[4] In May 2018, it was announced that Hyeyeon would take a temporary hiatus from activities due to health issues. On October 25, 2018, her departure from the group was confirmed for health and academic reasons. She shared a handwritten farewell letter with fans.[5][6]

2022–present: Acting career

After completing her studies, Jo transitioned to acting and adopted the name Jo Ah-ram. In a 2022 interview, she cited actress Kim Tae-ri as her role model and mentioned her interest in returning to music if the opportunity arises. On March 4, 2022, she signed an exclusive contract with the agency Beyond J.[7][8]

Jo made her television debut in 2022 with a minor role as Al-ba, a part-time supermarket employee, in the series The Killer's Shopping List.[9][10] In 2023, she gained more attention for her role in Doctor Cha as So-ra, a perfectionist third-year medical resident and the girlfriend of the protagonist's son.[11][12]

In March 2023, she was cast in her first film role in Victory, directed by Park Beom-soo. She portrayed Se-hyeon, a former cheerleader from Seoul who joins a local cheerleading team after moving to Geoje. The film wrapped filming in June 2023.[13][14]

In 2024, Jo landed her first leading television role in the tvN series The Auditors, portraying Seo-jin, a new employee in a construction company's audit team. Shortly after the series aired, her film Victory was released, marking her cinematic debut and her first leading role in a film.[15][16]
