Arif Alnomay (Arabic: عارف النُمي; born 1970, Ibb, Yemen) is a Yemeni photographer and visual artist known for his conceptual documentary work that explores memory, identity, and cultural heritage. His practice often delves into the forgotten narratives of Yemen, presenting them through a contemporary lens.
Early life and education
[edit]Alnomay was born in Ibb, Yemen, in 1970. He began his primary education at the age of twelve. In 1989, he moved to Saudi Arabia, where he worked in his grandfather's photography studio in Abha. This experience introduced him to the fundamentals of photography, including analog printing and coloring. He pursued education through distance learning with the American School (ISC), though language barriers posed challenges. During his time in Abha, he connected with a group of Saudi artists at the Al Meftaha Arts Village, including Ahmed Mater, Ashraf Fayadh, and Abdulnasser Gharem, who influenced his artistic development.[1]
Career
[edit]Alnomay's work focuses on documentary photography, scrutinizing the forgotten memories of Yemen through conceptual scenarios. His projects often revolve around Yemen's past, present, and future, exploring cultural and political narratives against the backdrop of regional conflict and global transformation.[1]
He has participated in exhibitions and projects that highlight the complexities of Yemeni identity and displacement. Notably, his work has been featured in the exhibition "Echoes of Invisible Hearts: Narratives of Yemeni Displacement".[2]
Notable works
[edit]One of Alnomay's significant projects is the "Recovery — Return of the Uncertain Memory" series, which delves into the fragmented memories of Yemen's cultural landscape. This series has been showcased on platforms such as Artsy.[3]
