Princess Anne-Marie

[rediger kildetekst]

Dear Pugilist, Thank you very much for answering my question on the "Landsbybrønden". The link of the Danish National Encyclopedia is really interesting (even if it is quite imprecise: Anne-Marie converted into orthodoxy on April, 21th 1965, that is to say 7 month after her wedding) and it is the first reliable source I read... But something else you have writen interested me. You said: "The decision was made at a meeting in the Danish "Statsrådet" in June 1964." Can you tell me how do you know that? Is there an article or something else where you found this information? Another time, thank you for your help. Kind regards, Konstantinos (diskussion) 2. maj 2025, 20:05 (CEST)[svar]

@Konstantin:: I have looked a little further into the matter and have been looking to find online sources describing the event.
The background to all of this lies in the 1953 amendment of the Danish Constitution and the related Danish Act of Succession (Tronfølgeloven). Although Tronfølgeloven is formally separate from the Constitution (Grundloven), it is generally regarded as part of the constitutional framework (the legal reasoning behind this is complex, but not relevant here). The 1953 amendment introduced the possibility for a female heir to succeed to the throne if the monarch had no sons. This change opened the path for King Frederik IX’s daughters—including Princess Anne-Marie—to be included in the line of succession, bypassing his less popular brother, Prince Knud.
The 1953 Act of Succession is available here. According to Section 5, Subsection 3, any heir who marries without the King's consent given in the Council of State (Statsrådet) forfeits their right to the throne.
So, when the heir Princess Anne-Marie in 1964 declared her intention to enter into marriage with Konstantin, the King’s formal approval was necessary. In practice, this may have mattered less, as Anne-Marie was third in line after her two older sisters. Some sources suggest the lack of consent was due to religious concerns, but this is unlikely—Anne-Marie did not convert to Orthodoxy until well after the marriage, as you rightly note. More credible sources suggest that the main issue was political: it was deemed inappropriate for a Danish heir to marry into another royal family, especially a reigning or future monarch, due to the potential for some sort of a dual monarchy between Denmark and Greece.
Details of the Council of State meeting in July 1964 are documented in the paper "Valget af tronfølger i 1953 – perspektiver til Europas øvrige monarkier" by historian Mads Valdemar Egsgaard Hauge. The relevant information can be found on page 67 in the pdf-version. While I cannot confirm whether the paper is peer-reviewed, it appears to be a well-researched and comprehensive academic source.
A formal confirmation that Anne-Marie forfeited her claim to the throne upon her marriage on 18 September 1964 can be found in the 1992 edition of the official Danish royal and state encyclopedia, Kongelig Dansk Hof- og Statskalender. This is stated explicitly on page 16 of the PDF version.
Unfortunately, the sources are in Danish, but I hope you still find them helpful. Best of luck with your project.
Another time, thank you. Danish is not a problem thanks to translating tools. Kind regards, Konstantinos (diskussion) 3. maj 2025, 18:44 (CEST)[svar]
