Enrollment in the training requires registration. Participants can earn a certificate of completion.
Health metrics core skills
This resource offers learning support if you want to build your skills in health metrics science. Health metrics research relies on strong skills in coding, epidemiology, and statistics. To help you grow in these areas, we’ve outlined key skills and provided self-paced learning materials you can use anytime.
This resource is flexible and fully self-directed. You can learn at your own pace, choose the topics that matter most to you, and use the materials however they fit your goals.
You can choose any subject you’d like to explore further. Each subject includes:
- An assessment to evaluate your current skill level in the subject.
- A list of key skills relevant to that topic.
- Note that in health metrics sciences, two widely used programming languages are R and Python. You can choose to learn either one or both, depending on your goals and interests. If your research team, colleagues, or organization primarily use one of these languages, it’s best to focus on learning that one.
- Recommended resources and training related to each skill to help you build those skills.
Once you’ve completed the training for a subject, you can choose to retake the assessment to check your progress.
Workshops
IHME offers workshops to enhance proficiency in using data visualization tools, understanding GBD methods, interpreting estimates, and communicating results to stakeholders. GBD workshops cultivate connections and knowledge-sharing between engaged audiences.
Currently, we offer a workshop focusing on GBD foundations in 1-, 3-, and 5-day formats. This workshop provides an overview of the GBD study, a review of results from GBD 2023, and a hands-on session using the GBD Compare tool. The workshop is ideal for participants who need a basic understanding of the study’s purpose, key metrics, and the tools used to explore GBD estimates.
These workshops are offered regionally and are designed to bring together researchers, policymakers, analysts, and academics from the same region. Each workshop features GBD experts and experienced instructors. If you are interested in learning more about workshop offerings, please contact us at [email protected].
Degrees
Academic degrees in health metrics are available through the University of Washington, Department of Health Metrics Sciences.
