This document defines and explains key art elements including line, shape, form, space, and texture. It discusses the different types of lines such as horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved, and zigzag lines and the feelings they communicate. It defines shape as a two-dimensional figure enclosed by a line and distinguishes between geometric and organic shapes. Form is defined as having three dimensions of height, width, and depth. Space refers to the area between, around, above and below objects. Finally, it describes tactile, artificial and visual textures.
Introduction to basic art concepts: lines, shapes, forms, textures; objectives outline learning goals.
Discussion on different line types: horizontal (calm), vertical (strength), diagonal (action), curved (flow), zigzag (chaos). Each line type communicates unique feelings.
Shapes as 2D figures: geometric (precise) vs organic (natural). Basic geometric shapes identified.
Forms as 3D objects related to shapes. Differentiation between geometric and organic forms with examples.
Explanation of space in art, including negative space as empty areas between and around objects.
Texture's surface qualities perceived through touch and sight, including tactile, artificial, and visual textures.
Final overview and conclusion regarding lines, shapes, forms, space, and textures in art.
OBJECTIVES :
Aftercompleting this lesson, you will able to :
o Define the term line;
o Name the different kinds of lines and describe the
feelings communicated be each;
o Explain the difference between shape and form;
Explain the difference between geometric and
organic shapes;
Show the similarities and differences among actual,
artificial, and visual textures.
A line isa mark made by a moving point. There are
five main kinds of lines: horizontal, vertical, diagonal,
curved, and zigzag. Each type is capable of
communicating of a feeling to the viewer.
Arts depends heavily on lines. Artists use lines to
draw and create pictures. They use lines to control
the movement of the viewer’s eyes. When you see a
line, your eyes usually follow its movement.
Lines
DIAGONAL LINES
Seems tobe leaning and are somewhere between a
vertical and a horizontal line. In art, diagonal lines
show action and excitement. Sometimes, they make
a viewer feel tense and uncomfortable when they go
in various directions.
CURVED LINES
Seems tochange direction. Spirals and circles begin
with curves. Wavy lines are a series of curves.
Curves lines express movement in a graceful and
flowing way.
ZIGZAG LINES
Are madeby combinational diagonal lines that form
sharp angles and suddenly change direction. Zigzag
lines suggest action and nervous excitement. They
can create confusion.
SHAPE
Shape is atwo-dimensional figure enclosed by a line.
Shape are flat. They have only height and width. The
two kinds of shapes are geometric and organic.
Geometric shapes are precise shapes that look as if
they were made with a ruler or other drawing tools.
The five basic geometric shapes are: square, circle,
triangle, rectangle and oval.
17.
Organic shapes arenot regular or ever. Their outlines
curve to make free-form shapes. Organic shapes are
often found in nature.
18.
FORM
Form is anelement of art that refers to an object with
three dimensions --- height, width, and depth. Like
shapes, forms are either geometric or organic.
Examples of organic forms are leaves, stones, and
shells.
Shapes and forms are closely related. One side of a
cube is a square.
A triangle is a shape. A pyramid is a form.
19.
SPACE
Space is anelement of art that refers to the distance
or area– between, around, above, and below– within
objects. All objects occupy space. A space that is
empty is called negative space.
20.
TEXTURE
Texture is thesurface quality of an object. Texture is
perceived through two senses – touch and sight.
There are three kinds of textures: tactile, artificial and
visual.
Tactile textures are real textures which you can touch
and feel.
Artificial textures refers to human-made surfaces
quality that is supposed to look and feel like some
material.
Visual textures are textures evoked by a photograph
or picture depicting an object. They call to mind
memories of how those objects feel when touched.
