Keith Haring http://www.egodesign.ca/_files/articles/blocks/5007_2_keith_haring.jpgBorn on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania/raised in Kutztown Homosexual Was raised Protestant and came into contact with members of the Jesus Movement, whose goal was “to reach the whole world for Christ.” He attended the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh and the School of Visual Arts in New York City Inspired by graffiti art Influenced by Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Alechinsky, William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and Robert Henri’s piece The Art Spirit First began creating his drawings with chalk on black pieces of paper located in subways The Radiant Baby became his known symbol; it stood for "life, energy, happiness and the positive side of humanity." He organized and participated in numerous art exhibitions He created paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, and made many different public murals carrying social messages Much of his work focused around birth, death, love, sex, and war In 1986, he opened up the Pop Shop, which held many different items that had his images on them Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 Created the Keith Haring Foundation Died on February 16, 1990, due to an AIDS-related disease

Untitled (Nativity), 1983Medium: chalk on black paper In this piece of work, Haring incorporates his use of his known symbol The Radiant Baby to symbolize the child of Christ in his rendition of the Nativity scene. He also included the Holy Family surrounding the Radiant Child, the shepherds, and Magi, but draws them in his own unique way. The 4 winged-men symbolize the angels surrounding the star in the sky beaming down upon the Radiant Child. The lines beaming off the Radiant Child “indicate spiritual light glowing from within, as though the baby were a holy figure from a religious painting, only the glow is rendered in the visual vocabulary of a cartoon,” says Haring. These specific elements reinforce the meaning of the piece by relating them to the original Nativity scene, establishing the same connection between the artist and his audience. http://www.haring.com/art_haring/images/radiantchrist_6.jpg

The Radiant Baby , for example, is the symbol that he is known for. The radiating lines from the angels, star, and baby, giving them a sense of movement that he is also known for in his art work.
