And there is a few Desktop Environment, like KDE , XFCE

Installation(software) We use a package manager, when installing software.
Rarely we have to download from the web via the browser
Compiling software is usually unecessary for desktop use, although the option for compiling them remains
Demo on Synaptic and PackageKit
Installation Details It is very distro independent
Deb file is for debian, and ubuntu,
RPM file is for Red Hat based, aka Fedora, Suse
tar.gz file, tends to be source code, meant to be compiled, sometime proprietary binary executable, so the README file is important
