PRIMARY GAME DESIGN SCHEMAS

RULES: contains formal game design schemas that focus on the
essential logical and mathematical structures of a game.

PLAY: contains contextual game design schemas that foreground
the player’s to participation with the game and with other players.

CULTURE: contains contextual game design schemas that

investigate the larger cultural contexts within which games are
designed and played

Overview of design theory

GAME FUNDAMENTALS
•Understanding design, system and interactivity
as well as player choice, action and outcome.
•A study of rule-making and rule-breaking,
complexity and emergence, game experience,
game representation and social game interaction.
•The power connection between the rules of a
game, the pleasures games invoke, and the
stories they tell.

WHAT GAMES
ARE ?

HOW THEY
WORK ?

Overview of design theory
GAME COMPONENTS

•PLAYERS: who are willing to participate the game (e.g. for
enjoyment, diversion or amusement)

•RULES: which define the limits of the game
•GOALS: which give arise to conflicts and rivalry among the players.

THE GAME EVOLUTION
Progress in the areas of
GRAPHICS,
SOUND,
CONTROLLERS, TECHNOLOGY
and
MULTIPLAYER
have
affected the way players
experience games.
For
these
five
different
categories, a milestone from the
classic and contemporary eras
has been selected, along with a
title that best represents that
period.

10
THE GAME EVOLUTION: VECTOR GRAPHIC
First introduced in 1978’s
SPACE WARS, vector graphics
were a popular alternative to
sprite-based rendering.
Instead of dividing the screen
area into pixels, vector-based
games used a light beam that
drew bright and complex
images (both 2D and 3D) onto
the screen by rapidly creating a
series of connected lines.
The downside was that these
visuals had to be composed of
wire frames rather than of solid
objects.

11
THE GAME EVOLUTION: SOUND
Sound effects and music
heighten the realism of the
overall experience by drawing
you in ways you often don’t
realize.
In the early days, video games’
sound effects consisted of little
more than ELECTRONIC BEEPS,
but soon these beeps were
strung together to form simple
tunes.

they
are
have
become
ingrained in the minds of many
gamers who grew up in the

early 80s.

12
THE GAME EVOLUTION: CONTROLLER
A game controller is a device used with games or entertainment
systems to provide input to a video game, typically to control an
object or character in the game.

MMX3043 L.F.M.I. 2014

13
THE GAME EVOLUTION: TECHNOLOGY
The development and release of laser-disc technology occurred at
a time when video games were just beginning to take off. In just a
few years, the industry had transformed from a “fad” to a fullblown craze.
Arcades were still where you could find the best games, with
home systems striving to catch up. In hindsight, it was only a
matter of time before someone made the CONNECTION BETWEEN
LASER DISCS AND VIDEO GAMES.

where two or more gamers can play in the same game at the same
time, co-operatively as a clan (or team) or head-to-head competitively
(often referred to as deathmatch)
