From Theory of Change to Program Model
Theory of Change model is the fundamental of Program model
Results reflect the sequence of outcomes over time through impact
Impact can be beyond the scope of the program being modeled.
Sometimes it is possible to develop Theory of Change model from
Program model.
Assumption Matter
Most cases; PLM are built without assumption and underlying Theory of
Change model
Causes Lack of Focus and intensity.
Causes erupt during development and chaos.
Key Elements of Program Logic Model
● The elements of Program Logic Model are:
1. Resources - essential for activities to occur
2. Activities - actions that make up the program
3. Outputs - what activities will produce or create
4. Outcomes - changes or the result of the program for individuals, groups or
organizations
Resources Activities Outputs Outcomes Impact
Planned Work Intended result
Nonlinear Program Logic Models
Reality proposes that program logic models are made nonlinear in cycles,
iterations, and interactions.
There is no specific starting point.
Hidden Assumptions and Dose
Program logic models rely on assumptions.
Logic models should have the sufficient dose; number, type, duration of
activities, to be effective.
Building a Program Logic Model
Program logic model provides detail for the theory of change by
explicating the elements from basic logic model for each strategy
strand.
Several strategies can be shown to contributing collectively to outcomes
rather than each strategy contributing to single outcome.
Program logic model provides adequate details to create work plan.
From Strategy to Activities
Each strand of comprehensive logic model needs to illustrate the
contribution of each strategies as well as the interdependence.
There’s should be relationship between activities in one strategy.
Action Step for a Program Logic Model
The starting point for Program logic model and Theory of Change model should
start from outcome and impact.
Steps to draft Program logic model:
1. Identify the results of strategies will ultimately generate.
2. Describe series of outcome that will show progress toward impact.
3. Name all the activities needed to generate the outcomes.
4. Define the resources that link directly to and will supply the activities.
5. Identify the outputs that reflect the accomplishment of activities.
Group Process
Who will involve in logic modelling:
Funders
Program staff
Program participants
Update models correspond to the changes in external factors
Improving the model has been previously discussed
