ACTION OF POISON
The action of poisons is mainly of two types,
1. Local action - These actions take place after local absorption of poison or medicine.
These actions do not require post-digestion, absorption of poisons.
Local symptoms like redness (Erythema), congestion, inflammation etc. resulting from
erosion of the local tissues
Ex-At the site of contact –
a) Chemical causes destruction/burns due to concentrated corrosiveness eg: H₂SO₄
b) Vatsanabha causes - Tingling sensation in the skin and tongue due to effect on the sensory and
motor nerves
c) Dilation of cornea due to use of Datura beeja swarasa (Atropine drop).
2. General/Systemic action – For these actions poison or medicine is used after digestion.
For action its necessary for universal absorption by mixing in the blood.
Ex: 1. Internal /Intravenous use of Vatsanabha can result in cardiac toxicity and even death.
2.Corrosive poisons - Vomiting, Diarrhea, Colic Pain etc.
Apart from this, other actions of some poisons and medicines are also seen, such as
i) Remote action - seen in specific tissues or organs in the form of reflex actions of poison/substance,
Ex: after eating red chilli - Sweating, Burning sensation in the tongue, lips, eyes & Tears etc.
ii) Combined action - In some poisons, both local and systemic actions are seen in mixed form.
Ex: carbolic acid (phenol) produces burning action when used locally and systemic symptoms when used
internally ( Locally as corrosives and if ingested, act as systemic poison )
iii) Specific action - Some medicines/poisons have specific actions based on their active toxic
constituent Ex: Kupilu on the spinal cord- spinal poison
Karaveera, Vatsanabha, tobacco – Cardiac poison.
In animal bite or sting, the poison spreads in the body by diffusion method by crossing the mucous membrane of
lymphatic channels through lymphatic circulation. So systemic action is not possible will see only local actions.
