Why settle for plain hot sauce or mayonnaise when you can treat yourself to this delicious Sriracha Mayo recipe? Just like my sriracha ranch sauce, it’s the ultimate dipping sauce or spread!

Spoon drizzling sriracha mayo into small glass jar.

A creamy, fiery, and tangy condiment, spicy mayo is possibly the best homemade sauce to whip up when you want to serve a crowd, your family, or just yourself. I love making it from scratch because (1) I’m in complete control of the flavors and spice level, (2) the 7 simple ingredients take minutes to stir together, and (3) I can keep a batch in my fridge at all times.

That last one is particularly important because this spicy mayo sauce can be served with practically any dish, from burgers and french fries to sushi. Pro tip: double or triple the recipe so you always have extras on hand!

What is spicy mayo?

Spicy mayo, AKA sriracha mayonnaise, is a popular American-Asian fusion condiment. It combines mayonnaise and sriracha chili sauce to create a perfectly creamy, rich, and fiery dipping sauce or spread you can serve with almost anything!

Ingredient notes

Ingredients for sriracha mayo labeled on counter.
  • Mayonnaise – This is the rich and creamy base of the sauce. Opt for a brand of mayonnaise you already love to give your sauce a great flavor and consistency.
  • Sriracha – Sriracha is a chili-based hot sauce with a smoky, tangy, and slightly sweet flavor. While it’s definitely spicy, you can adjust the amount in the sauce to achieve your perfect level of heat.
  • Garlic – Grated or minced fresh garlic is best, but you can substitute jarred minced garlic or garlic powder to save some time. Roasted garlic would also be great!
  • Lemon juice and zest – The acidity in freshly squeezed lemon juice helps balance the richness of the mayo, while the zest adds a tangy, citrusy element. Feel free to use lime juice and lime zest as a substitute.
  • Cayenne pepper – For an extra kick of heat and depth of flavor.
  • Salt – To taste.

Step 2

Enjoy!

  • Serve the sauce right away with your favorite dishes or store it in the refrigerator for later.

Tips and tricks

  • Taste the sriracha mayo after mixing the ingredients together. Adjust the flavor to your liking by adding more sriracha, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and/or salt as needed.
  • For a thinner consistency, stir a little water, vinegar, or additional lemon juice into the sauce. Or, if you like it thicker, add a bit more mayo.
  • Refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving to help it thicken and to let the flavors meld together and intensify.

Variations

This dipping sauce is easy to customize for your dietary preferences and taste buds:

  • Vegan sriracha mayo – Make this sauce with vegan mayonnaise for a vegan-friendly or egg-free variation.
  • Make it extra creamy – Stir in a dollop of Greek yogurt or sour cream to enhance the richness and tangy flavor.
  • Smoky sriracha mayo – Consider adding a dash of smoked paprika or chipotle powder. This variation pairs particularly well with grilled meats, seafood, and roasted vegetables.
  • Sriracha ranch – Try this spicy sriracha ranch instead!
  • Wasabi sriracha mayo – Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons of wasabi paste into the mayo mixture. The combination of creamy mayo, spicy sriracha, and pungent wasabi is perfect for sushi, seafood, and Asian-inspired dishes.

Serving suggestions

Sriracha mayonnaise is perfect for dipping, spreading, or drizzling! You’ll love pairing it with all kinds of delicious recipes, such as:

  • Sides and snacks: It’s the best dipping sauce for roasted sweet potatoes, sweet potato fries, carrot fries, shoestring fries, zucchini fries, crispy chicken tenders, or any deep-fried snacks!
  • Burgers and sandwiches: Spread the spicy sauce on these Smoked Burgers, Air Fryer Burgers, crispy chicken sandwiches, Cuban Sandwiches, and Cheesesteak Sandwiches.
  • Sashimi and sushi rolls: Complete your homemade Hamachi Crudo, Salmon Sushi Bites, and Vegetarian Spicy “Tuna” Rolls with a drizzle of spicy mayo on top. It’s also a fantastic sauce for these Ahi Poke Bowls, Spicy Shrimp Sushi Bowls, and Salmon Sushi Bowls.
  • Tacos: Drizzle it on top of these Korean Beef Tacos, Street Corn Tacos, Cauliflower Tacos, Sweet Potato Tacos, and Fish Taco Bowls to take the flavors up a notch.

FAQs

Is it spicy?

It isn’t called spicy mayo for nothing! Sriracha is made from chili peppers, which gives it a spicy kick. Luckily, the mayonnaise tempers the heat really well and you can always use less sriracha (2 to 3 tablespoons instead) if spicy food isn’t your thing.

I don’t have sriracha. What can I use instead?

Feel free to replace the sriracha with another hot sauce, like sambal oelek, Tabasco, or Frank’s RedHot. You can also use a combination of chili paste and a splash of vinegar to mimic the flavor profile of sriracha.

Is sriracha mayo the same as yum yum sauce?

While both are mayo-based dipping sauces, sriracha mayo and yum yum have different flavor profiles. Sriracha mayo is creamy and spicy, whereas yum yum is a creamy and tangy sauce made with mayonnaise, tomato paste, butter, sugar, and simple seasonings.

Storing

Store the leftover sriracha mayo in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Give it a good stir before serving, as the ingredients may separate during storage.

I don’t recommend freezing spicy mayo because the consistency isn’t as smooth or creamy after thawing.
