Description of Significance The Senufo community inhabits an expansive region extending through southern Mali, Burkina Faso, and northern Ivory Coast. Sometimes, they self-identify as the Siénas, a term implying "those who toil in the fields". Their main occupation revolves around agriculture, cultivating crops like millet, rice, corn, yams, cassava, and tea. The Senufo earned global recognition for their artistic creations and their diverse array of masks. The distinctive Senufo tables, with their curved surfaces and slimming legs, can be identified easily. Historically, these table designs served as textile washboards. VIEW ALL STONE SHONA SCULPTURE Artist Bio: Bywell Sango Bywell Sango, born on November 28, 1979, is a distinguished stone sculptor from Zimbabwe, belonging to the Soko (Monkey) clan. Influenced by his late brother, Brighton Sango, Bywell began sculpting at an early age. He is married to Priscilla Muchehwa, and together they have four children. During school holidays, Bywell honed his skills by assisting Brighton in creating and completing sculptures, developing a unique cubic style. The competitive spirit among the Sango brothers encouraged subtle yet distinct approaches to their art. Bywell's work focuses on perfecting his cubic interpretation of emotions and situations in abstract form, drawing inspiration from the natural shape of the stone rather than Shona mythology. Description of Significance: The Xhosa people, from South Africa's Eastern Cape, are renowned for their beadwork. Crafting intricate necklaces that are not only visually stunning but also rich in cultural significance. Every pattern woven into Xhosa beaded necklaces carries unique meanings embedded in the Xhosa heritage. In traditional Xhosa society, these beaded creations were more than mere adornments; they served as a visual language, conveying a person's social identity. The colors and designs chosen in each piece would signify various aspects of one's life, including age, gender, marital status, as well as their role and standing within the community. This art form, therefore, is a tapestry of symbolism, narrating the stories of the Xhosa people and their way of life.
