Traditional Japanese wedding customs or shinzen shiki comprises an elaborate ceremony in the Shinto shrine. The Japanese bride may be painted pure white from head to feet as a declaration of her maiden condition to the gods. The bride’s attire consists of a luxurious kimono, strong make-up, a hairpiece, and a head covering. A pair of two choices of headgear are present: the wataboshi, a white-colored hood; and a tsunokakushi that serves to hide the bride’s “horns of jealousy” and symbolizes her purpose in becoming a soft and obedient wife.
