Spraying Fruit trees each spring & fall. Products are linked in my LTK.
🌳 Time to prune dormant fruit trees and cat’s pajama neputa! Pruning your fruit trees increases air flow, health of the tree and more productive! I prune any dead or weak branches, branches that are crossing each other and branches that are growing toward the base of the tree. #fruittrees #appletree #peartree #peachtree #pruning #pruning #treepruning
Friendly reminder to spray your fruit trees. We spray our fruit trees 3 times a year, one in fall when all the leaves have fallen, another in winter, and last but most importantly February/March. These ornamental grasses needed to be divided so badly. Almost 3 weeks later they are looking so much better! Here are a couple of ways to determine if your perennial needs to be divided ⬇️ 1. Produce smaller blooms 2. Center dies (just like my ornamental grass) Not all perennials like to be divided so make sure you do your own research. Pruning lilac bushes today. I prefer to do this in the spring because I can clearly see what branches have buds and which ones don’t. Anything that doesn’t have a bud gets cut. The goal? Continuous harvests! Succession planting is a great technique where you plant crops in a strategic sequence. I like to plant all my leafy greens and carrots on a continuous planting schedule every few weeks.

You can do this with just about every crop!

My favorite way to grow! Growing vertically has so many advantages ➡️ saves space so you can plant more! ➡️ more air flow for your plants which decreases diseases and pests. ➡️ can spot diseases/pests easier I use cattle panels for both of my trellis, but there are many different styles, sizes and non permanent. Check out my LTK finds for some options. Happy gardening! #zone4gardening #gardening #midwestgarden #raisedbedgarden #trellisgarden #verticalgarden #viningplants #viningcrops

Soft frost vs hard frost and what it means for your fall crops. Soft frost is when temps dip below 28 degrees for a short period of time. Some hardy plants and crops may experience damage on the tip/top. Crops in the brassica family and carrots can handle a soft frost. Hard frost is when temps dip below 28 for an extended period of time. This will kill most perennials and root crops. If you’re wanting to extend your growing season definitely protect your crops with frost protection clot...
Crops I’m harvesting after a light frost ⬇️ 🥬Cabbage can handle a light frost and in most cases a hard frost. If temps are expected to drop under 25 degrees I recommend some protection. 🥦Broccoli & Brussel sprouts can also handle a light and hard frost. They can tolerate temps as low as 25 degrees. If you’re expecting temps to drop below 25 degrees add some protection. 🥕Carrots can handle a light frost, temps between 28-32 degrees. Carrots become more sweet growing in lower temps, if you h...
Here’s why I cut all my hostas back after the first frost… Cutting off the dead leaves will prevent diseases and insects overwintering in your plant. Slugs and nematodes are popular pests to overwinter in hostas, harming your plant come spring time. Happy fall prepping! #fallprep #fallgardenprep #zone4gardening #gardening #midwestgarden

Powdery mildew 🙅🏻‍♀️ A common garden disease that looks like white powdery patches and can very easily spread plant to plant. I keep an eye out for this disease because it’s just a matter of when not if. Although there are plants you can purchase that are powdery mildew resistant it’s still a possibility they can catch this disease. Here are some ways to avoid this issue: 💦 avoid overhead watering especially in the evenings 💦cut any leafs that look infected, dispose far away from your gar...

Hardneck garlic vs. softneck garlic… I personally grow Hardneck due to our cold winters. Here are some key features to consider when deciding which to grow. Hardneck: 🧄Stronger flavor 🧄Larger but fewer cloves in each bulb 🧄Grows best in cooler regions 🧄Shelf life 4-6 months Softneck: 🧄Mild in flavor compared to hardneck 🧄Smaller cloves but the number of cloves is much greater 🧄Grows best in regions with mild winters 🧄Shelf life 9-12 months Happy planting! #zone4gardening #gardening #g...

🌿 Quick Rule of Thumb
	•	Hardneck = better flavor, easier peeling, larger cloves but shorter storage. Better for colder climates. I’m planting music and red chestnut this year, both hard neck garlic
	•	Softneck = milder flavor, more cloves but smaller, longer storage, good for braiding. Better for mild cl...

Adding fertilizer to my berries in the spring.
Are you wanting to grow fruit this year? Start with strawberries and or raspberries. Other than tomatoes, which is considered a fruit, these are fruits that require little maintenance once established.

Strawberries thrive in most climates and are quick to produce. They can be grown in a simple small container. I grew mine in this greenstalk tower and I’m obsessed. I have over 30 plants in this one tower.

Raspberries are another easier fruit with little maintenance from year to year. Be su...
Let’s get these blueberries a better home. I used a mixture of potting soil and peat moss in these large containers. Our soil is not acidic enough for blueberries to thrive. Growing them in containers allows more control to amend the soil. Come later in the spring I’ll add Espoma soil acidifier until the soil is at prime PH levels for blueberries to thrive, which is 4.5. 2 years of blood sweat and tears in 7 seconds. 🌱 Planting a fall crop of broccoli today… with my little “helper” 🐶 by my side. Gardening with a puppy means twice the dirt, twice the laughs, and hopefully just as much broccoli come harvest time! 🥦✨

Wondering what to plant with your brassicas? Here are a few ⬇️

Spinach & lettuce - Can be interplanted to make use of space and help shade the soil to retain moisture.

Bush Beans – Fix nitrogen in the soil, which broccoli benefits from.

Beets, Radishes – Generally grow well with broccoli and don’t compete heavily for above-ground space.

Happy planting!

Since I was having to do so much cleaning anyways why not add more cleaning to my list by ripping out the pole beans 🤣 I’ll be planting sugar snap peas later this week but for now cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning. #gardenupdate // it’s crazy to think I’ll be ripping these green beans out soon. By this time of year my pole beans are looking tired. I’ve already started seeing some green beans turning yellow. Instead of adding fertilizer and trying to baby them, which you definitely can do, I like to succession plant another batch instead. It’s easier to manage and I harvest far more this way. Once these green beans are done I’ll be planting another batch of sugar snap peas for fall. Happy planting!...
#gardentips // green bean will slow production down if not harvested often. So pick those beans as often as you can, the bigger they get the less flavor they have. Many crops are like this including but not limited to zucchini, cucumbers, and peas. #harvesting #gardenharvest #greenbeans #midwestgarden #zone4 #trellisgarden #raisedbedgarden

Adding flowers to my vegetable garden has been a huge focus for me this year. Lavender is one of those flowers that is so beautiful and beneficial for your garden and doesn’t really have any foes. They attract beneficial pollinators and deters those pesky mosquitoes. Happy gardening! #garden #gardening #flowergardening #lavenderflowers #companionplanting #zone4gardening #zone4garden
