For example: 4/4 time (also called "Common Time") means there are 4 beats in each measure, and each beat is a quarter note.
2/2 time (also known as "Cut Time") means there are 2 beats in each measure, and each beat is a half note.
Instead of always writing the numbers (4/4 or 2/2), musicians often use special symbols. For 4/4, there's a C-shaped symbol called Common Time, and for 2/2, a similar symbol with a slash through it is used, called Cut Time. Now you know what they mean whenever you get acros them.
