The four temperaments are melancholic, phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. They are based on the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air. Each person has a unique mix of the four elements. The dominant element determines the temperament of an individual. So a person with mostly water element (or phlegm humor) would have a phlegmatic temperament.
