Flower Pounding: A Natural Way to Dye Fabric

Steps I used for this project:
1. Wash your fabric regularly to insure it’s fully clean.
2. Mix 2 cups of hot water and 1/4 cup of alum (per yard of fabric). Let the fabric sit in this mixture for 2 hours.
3. In the same mixture as step 2, now add 1tsp washing soda in 1/2 cup of hot water. Let that sit overnight.
4. Wring out the fabric and allow it to air dry
5. Collect flowers and place them face down on your fabric.
6. Add a piece of parchment paper over the flowers and lightly (and evenly) hammer them onto the fabric.
7. Remove the parchment paper and carefully peel off what’s left of the flowers.
8. Set your design by placing a paper over your fabric and ironing everything that has the hammered flowers on it.

Flower pounding is a technique of hammering plants to create patterns on fabric. It is a very simple technique that renders gorgeous results. All you need is fresh flowers, a hammer and fabric to transfer the flowers. I pre-treated the fabric with soy milk and this was kind of a test for me as I tried flower pounding for the first time ever. I am definitely going to try this technique on different a fabric. •
